photos by Chris La Putt

Islands @ Solar One

"We've challenged a top chef to feed your tummy at our first-ever Backyard BBQ event. We've given him the ingredients and space to prepare a feast for hundreds. Is he up to the challenge? You better believe it. Tell your friends, grab a blanket and come on out to this one-of-a-kind party. Look for a full-set performance by Islands, and enjoy FREE BEER all day. We're hosting a cook-off challenge where you'll have the chance to have your food critiqued by celebrity judges and win CASH PRIZES. Carnivores and vegetarians are welcome! This event is all ages."
That's how NY Magazine described Saturday afternoon's sold-out affair @ Solar One on the East River Waterfront in NYC (August 23, 2008). More pics from the show below...

this has to be a joke..... hipsters don't eat.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 2:02 AM

there doesn't seem to be a lot of food on that table? what did you eat?

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 2:58 AM

was chris stuck on the left side of the stage for some reason?

They gave you a plate of food with a pork taco, a corn on the cob seasoned with parmesan cheese, a couple of watermelon cubes, and a little cup of cobbler.

It was nice, but the beer line was unbelievable, and they only gave you one dixie cup of beer per 30 min wait.

Hate to quibble with such stellar reporting on this blog but what exactly was "sold-out" about this show? It was free and outside with no doors or barriers whatsoever. I strolled in right before Islands went on with no problem. Are you saying the band are sellouts?

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 3:28 AM

wait. there was nobody checking tickets at this? seriously?

was the $25 thing just a donation or...?

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 4:37 AM

that food sounds gross. pork taco? corn seasoned in cheese?

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 7:02 AM

Taco taco. Burrito burrito. Taco taco.
Fulfill all your wishes
with my taco-flavored kisses! Taco taco.

was taco time for mom and dad there?

"Hate to quibble with such stellar reporting on this blog but what exactly was "sold-out" about this show?"

Advanced tickets were sold out

"That food sounds gross. pork taco? corn seasoned in cheese?"

What is wrong with that? Both are completely standard affairs. Sorry Taco Bell wasn't sponsoring the event. Expand your mind square.

food was good, but they ran out of corn halfway through the crowd. way to use the guest list for food estimation.

also it was REALLY fun when they ran out of "free beer all day" just one hour into the event.

this was VERY DISORGANIZED, and i probably won't do another nymag event after this.

okay, enough about the food.

1) were islands as disappointing as they were at webster, or as good as they were at the todd p outdoor show during cmj?

2) why does despot show up at every show, everywhere, yet doesn't actually do anything by himself?

@ anon 9:09am

1) The food was really good but ran out so quickly.
2) Beer also ran out super fast.

Posted by Stupid Asshole Jr. | August 25, 2008 9:33 AM

Yes, the beer ran out, but they got more and there was plenty by the end of the event with little to no line. as for the food, there was still food at 3pm, what do you expect when you get there late?

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 10:05 AM

I had a good time...I'll leave the complaining to the cry babies. There was a ton of hot chicks there which is always nice.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 10:09 AM

Beer situation was abysmal. Epic line and they ran out halfway through. When you finally got to the beer stand, they filled a gnome-sized plastic cup with either Rolling Rock or Coors Light (!?) from the bottle/can causing the entire process to take longer than it does for one of those ironic moustaches to grow.

hey look at all them ChemTrails

I had fun...Islands rocked, weather was great. Before the band went on there was nothing better to do than stand in line for beer and squirt each other with water guns...so I didn't mind. But it did suck when the beer ran out...until the reserves arrived. Kinda poor planning. The band alone was worth the $...everything else was bonus.

And I think it's awesome that one of the dude's from the band won the $3500 Gibson guitar they raffled off.

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 10:38 AM

Yeah when he won won I was like "What the fuck?!?" but apparently he bought 12 tickets and I didn't buy any so go figure...

Is that supposed to be his wife's blood on his shirt, from when he beat her? Oh, I get it...

Unless it's horribly emo and his heart is bleeding.

Posted by Lt. Slothrop | August 25, 2008 12:17 PM

Hey, how come the guitar player didn't get the memo about only drummers and Angus Young being allowed to wear shorts?

You, sir, are no Angus!

(A loincloth, a la Ted Nugent, would have been perfectly acceptable.)

Posted by Lt. Slothrop | August 25, 2008 12:20 PM

It was a sold out event and if you weren't on the list they weren't letting you in. Saw a couple of people turned away.

I got there at 1pm and had no problems drinking the microbrew they were serving for the first couple of hours. I waited no longer than 15-20 minutes at most for a beer. Islands were ok not great but not bad.

It was a fine way to spend a beautiful day outside. But you could have got a 12 pack with a paper bag and sat outside.

ps. I thought the food was good, especially the corn.

Cool photos Chris.

1) islands were really good at this show, even though nick got pissed off at the unenthusiastic crowd right before the encore. they still came back out and played one more.

2) despot doesn't show up EVERYWHERE, but usually does something with them in ny. he also just came off tour with them about 2 months ago. he has his solo effort coming out on def jux in 09 with production by ratatat, blockhead, el-p and some other people. he seems to be taking his sweet time though

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 1:51 PM

What the fuck is the deal with them not playing "Rough Gem?"

It's their best song, and idea for an outdoor setting, yet they excluded it both here, and at Siren Festival.

For shame....

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 2:23 PM

islands suck, and I am from Montreal

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 3:07 PM

you suck, and I don't care where you're from

Posted by Anonymous | August 25, 2008 4:25 PM

Unicorns are forever. Islands are not.
