King Khan and the Shrines @ McCarren Pool

In a way, Sunday's free King Khan & the Shrines / Deerhunter (they didn't headline) / Black Lips show was also a King Khan show in three parts. Part one was the very entertaining performance by King Khan & The Shrines. Part two was King Khan on stage with Deerhunter whose final notes were overshadowed by King Khan's bare ass with a flower stuck in it. Part three was King Khan on stage with Black Lips which included a one-song guest appearance by The King Khan & BBQ Show (who are playing Santos Monday night) and a grand finale with the entire Atlanta crew on stage throwing toilet paper, ripping apart pillows and just generally being silly. The photos in this most are basically limited to act one...

Posted by eric | August 4, 2008 7:55 AM

People that get tattoos that say "Kill Your Self" give Tattoos a bad name.

Enjoy the rest of your life, jackass.

BTW, Yourself is one word, Needle Dick.

You're not punk.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 8:03 AM

eric- he didnt say that, he said "Id rather read spin magazine than shoot heroin"

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 8:39 AM

yourself is one word, dumbass.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 8:41 AM

I think Nick Zinner was at this show. Although why he didnt join on stage during black lips I dont know.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 8:49 AM

I saw leia at the show, she's doing something funky with her eye make-up!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 8:52 AM

'kill yourself' and 'kill your self' are two different meanings. think about it.

Posted by mensa you aint | August 4, 2008 9:10 AM

Hey Beavis, you should have chosen "your anus", like in Kill Uranus.... "yourself" is a single word, dumbass...

Posted by Butt-Head | August 4, 2008 9:14 AM

hey guys, yourself is one word. dumbass.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 9:21 AM

hey yourself, dumb and ass are two words.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 9:27 AM

shake your pussy!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 9:28 AM

king khan was the best of the lot....the rest of the bands were zzzzzzz....especially black lips, what happened to them? they turned into the Goo Goo Dolls or something?

Posted by CCC | August 4, 2008 9:34 AM

If you couldn't find something to enjoy at this show then I feel very sorry for you.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 9:39 AM

King Khan and Sebastien Tellier double bill NOW.

Posted by Hot hot hot | August 4, 2008 9:44 AM

i thought black lips killed it. I dont know what ccc is talking about.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 9:52 AM

I would just like to blindly add that yourself is one word.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 9:58 AM

too many people are discussing the music! i only want to hear about spelling errors on tattoos! because internet message boards are the ideal place for spelling/grammar discussions!

also, OMG, "yourself" is one word! jeez!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:01 AM

kill your self is even worse than kill yourself, which, i might add, is one word.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:03 AM

I had to leave halfway through Deerhunter, was I correct in thinking that KK&TS stole the whole fucking show?!?

Posted by Freepster | August 4, 2008 10:12 AM

awesome show. black lips ripped it up.

Posted by howard p. flochango | August 4, 2008 10:17 AM

all i can say to that, kk, no one can accuse of him not giving his 100 percent. maybe sometimes a bit over the top. esp when he was tongue kissing some dude on the stage and pulled his pants down. I mean keep it to back stage or something?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:18 AM

that nut shot with the piece of banana was pretty inspired, as was the keyboardist taking his shoes off and flinging them into the crowd.

also, "yourself" is one word.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:21 AM

was it just me, or did a lot of photographers decide to hang out on stage during black lips set? was it precaution against further insanity?

I thought for sure some crazy shit was gonna go down like them deciding to pee into the photo pit. fortunately that didnt happen.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:26 AM

is he "sieg heiling" in that one picture? better call France.

Posted by roger cohen | August 4, 2008 10:27 AM

he was seig heiling, during katrina, in homage to our gov't.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:29 AM

Alright, so as someone mentioned earlier "yourself" and "your self" have different meanings. Giving the person the benefit of the doubt, "Your Self" could be a reference to one's ego or one's sense of an individualistic identity rather than one's literal body as is implied with "yourself." So, perhaps the snarky commenters in here need to take a little of this person's advice and stop feeding your ego by jumping on everything you initially presume to be incorrect.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:30 AM

King Kahn & The Shrines made burning the crap out of my neck feel worth it. dooh mas!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:32 AM

kk seig heiling "this going out to our leaders", a politically charged moment?? : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LokaQc24p-0

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:36 AM

i wish i was there. well only sort of. but i'm sure it was an excellent show.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 10:40 AM

and pillow case turned into a kkk hood too, if you didnt notice...

NOT

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 11:15 AM

Problem I have with Black Lips is that they play the same fucking songs every show it seems.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 11:15 AM

Black Lips look like cute little forest animals caught in a Mac's headslights when they're on a big stage...they're out of their element, and they to change things up soon.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 11:18 AM

Anyone else notice the "Santos" written on the banana peel on the 7th picture?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 11:38 AM

will the picture of king khan's bare ass surface any time soon? i left before that happened, so i don't have one.

i'd just like to point out that there are a lot of normal-looking people at these pool parties, it's just that the the more "hipster" ones (like the girl in yellow top with plastic ball) get photographed more.

"HIV Positive is two words, dumbass."

'HIV' is not a word, it's an initialism, dumbass.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 11:44 AM

and while we're arguing about spelling anyway, i noticed the use of "King Kahn" in a few places, including 10:32 AM and that New York Times article on McCarren Pool.

Khan's family moved to Canada from India, not Germany.

Posted by hoovesontheturf | August 4, 2008 11:48 AM

what is this ex-black lips thing on that poster? are black lips gonna be at Santos or not? is it a secret show?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 11:51 AM

what poster?

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 11:57 AM

it say "K-Holes (ex-Black Lips)" go to santos calendar page to see it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 12:03 PM

oh yeah. that's def black lips.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 12:16 PM

nick zinner was there, he's so dreamy

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 12:37 PM

King Khan tries to hard to be funny and is old as fuck AND Novelty acts get old as fuck-- quick AND who cares about spelling errors on retards?

Posted by jameskittie | August 4, 2008 12:43 PM

Dude ain't novelty, he's broad appeal, and I didn't think he tried too hard to be funny. I think he IS funny, and a great entertainer at that. If you looked around, the majority of the crowd thought so too. Plus the guy can actually sing, and the songs are pretty decent too.

'kill your individual perception of being' is a little tough to get across the front of one's chest.

impressive knee-jerk reactions by a bunch of people not really thinking of an alternative meaning. just what i'd expect from the brooklyn masses - not that tattoo isn't attached to a walking mistake (wow, i'm just shitting on everyone here).

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 1:14 PM

and i'll point out my own omission of a second 'that' so that no one has aneurysm about a misspelling or grammatical error on the internet...

khan is fun and talented but this guy cant even jerk off my man speedo and the mighty rocket from the crypt.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 1:17 PM

gross

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 1:21 PM

couple notes:

king khan should have played later in the day. i was so hungover from the night before and still waiting to meet up with friends, and worrying about my cell phone being dead and then going over to matchless to charge it and do shots of tequila that i didn't feel it at all. sorry.

deerhunter i thought was really great. they actually played songs! i saw them at the silent barn, i guess it was last year and the whole set was just noise and boy on boy fellatio. this was more more enjoyable from them.

i've seen black lips a bunch of times, this was definitely not their best, but they played all of the hits so it was fun to dance and sing along. they were rather reserved too, behaviorally. possibly because of the large venue?

oh, and i nearly choked on pillow feathers and that wasn't very cool.

Posted by andrew | August 4, 2008 1:37 PM

I thought Deerhunter's set was pretty strong. I wasn't expecting much from Cryptograms or Florescent Gray [sp], but the band delivered. And the best of the new album too. But did anyone other than me feel that "Strange Lights" was fairly weak and apathetic? The band saved the song for last, it seems, but wasn't really into it--the performance was flat. (And let's not talk about the overindulgent noise at the end).

But still, a strong show by Deerhunter.

Posted by Regular reader | August 4, 2008 1:41 PM

I liked how "Strange Lights" sounded.

Posted by Scot | August 4, 2008 2:05 PM

deerhunter had the strongest set of the day but I think that was only b/c tall firs didn't play for very long.

Posted by lori | August 4, 2008 2:08 PM

How come no one brought up his gig at the Mercury? Fucking rad time! Discuss?!

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 2:54 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 3:05 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 3:12 PM

Any idea why he said fuck germany? not cool.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 6:15 PM

yeah he obviously hates germany...dude has a dozen german bandmates a german wife and lives in Berlin

dumbass

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 6:23 PM

he said "fuck Germany" cause he was trying to speak to the crowd but his German guitarist wouldn't stop tuning up...

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 8:08 PM

Maybe he wants to fuck Germany.

Posted by Anonymous | August 4, 2008 8:19 PM

K-Holes is actually Jack Hines who used to play guitar for Black Lips.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 9:07 PM

Wow, dirty lame hipsters with no talent. Not suprising at all actually, Vice Records hasn't put out any good artists in years.
