Melvins played 2 NYC shows and....Fox News (video)

by Black Bubblegum

Buzzo

And behold, King Buzzo of The Melvins shouted down upon the five boroughs.... there will be rock. The ashen-haired lord decreed a visit by Big Business and a surprise (to me anyway) opening set by Porn at the Bowery Ballroom (August 14, 2008). And it was good. Real good.

Well, except until moshers possibly cost everyone an encore. Buzzo was clearly irritated but expressed it calmly and with his trademark humor:

"I'm not Wavy Gravy. It isn't all about peace and love"

"Captain" Jared (also of Big Business) looked a little more peeved and menacing. Even while wearing a white suit and an utterly ridiculous sailor cap.

"Are you gonna' apologize to that girl you just kicked in the head?"

The discussion went on for another minute or so and in alot of ways reminded me of the "ice cream eating motherfucker" incident captured on the Fugazi Instrument DVD.

Until that moment (and after that) the Melvins were, as the Brits might say, "smashing". Tighter than a Kim Kardashian skirt, the band covered most of (A) Senile Animal and Nude with Boots, even paying tribute to The Who by covering "My Generation" in a way that only they could. The Dale Crover/Coady Willis two drum attack, while in alot of ways unnecessary, sounded fantastic in that room, but dwarfed the guitars. Buzzo and Jared's voices mesh together seemlessly and judging by the current poppy-Melvins phase the band is going through, Jared is a great addition on bass.

After "the incident", the band closed with Bullhead fave "Boris" (yes, the one that the band takes their name from) closing with Buzzo solo on guitar. I have seen my share of shows (of varying genres) at Bowery, and rarely have I seen a show peppered with as many whistles and "woo!"s as on Thursday night... Great, but I also could have used a little bit of Houdini or Stoner Witch era jams.

The same lineup played Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brookln one day earlier. Buzzo also appeared on Fox News yesterday. Video from that is below...

Who was the opening band at MHOW? They called themselves Shocker, it was Dale Crover and the guitarist from BB, but who was the main guy?

I KNOW I have seen him before and he was shooting the shit with Jim Thirlwell after his set. Frustrating because I am sure he was someone very legit and their set was sick. All noise and pedal manipulation with Crover doing sick primal drumming.

The BB drummer was on the floor simply messing with his pedals on his hands and the mystery man was manipulating noise he was generating through a Travis Bean.

red eye is the strangest thing. i can't figure out whether or not i should totally hate it, but my instinct tells me that i'd like to kick that guy in the head.

the melvins rule.

you should hate red eye, greg whatevethefuck just wants to be howard stern. they also managed to find a worse token dem than alan colmes.

mhow show had no encore either (that show too ended with boris). so i doubt the lack of encore had anything to do with the particular incident you described. i thought the no-encore decision was kinda cool. get out there, give it all you got, then step down.

i was at the Williamsburg show. fuckin badass!
was planning on going to the Bowery show as well, but it didn't quite work out...

btw, that small fight that broke out that BB stopped the show for was one of my friends. some asshole came from behind him randomly and threw him to the floor to take his spot up front, which was how it started

there was a small fight at MHOW as well, during big business's set. the captain broke it by (successfully) commanding the warring parties to go their separate ways.

forgot to add: he stopped the band mid-song - mid-riff, i should say: the break was so clean! - in order to take care of, ahem, business. then after breaking up the fight, they resumed the song as if nothing had happened. badasssssss

The host of Red Eye is so annoying, but having Buzz and Neil Hamburger on the show make me watch

To the guy who wished for "houdini/stoner witch" era tunes... They did play "honeybucket."

"why is there a john mccain ad at the bottom of this page??"

randomly generated by Google - probably because of the "Fox News" mention.

Posted by Anonymous | August 16, 2008 11:51 AM

the guitarist in the opening band is from Ghostdigital. And the Melvins don't play encores.

Apparently Black Bubblegumbrain doesn't know that Honey Bucket--which they played--is on Houdini.

Posted by circusking | August 17, 2008 10:56 PM

I was at the BB for the Melvins. The best line of the night was "1,2,3,4 herpes..."

Posted by ap | August 25, 2008 3:10 PM

Honeybucket is one song.
It would actually be super awesome if they still rocked out a few tunes from that era. I miss hearing some of that stuff live. I guess that's what happens when you're chock full o' badass jams. Can't play 'em all. ;)
