MIA @ MoMA (more by Ryan Muir)
MIA

without belittling the heinous acts propagated by the LTTE, DeLon's diss track and video feel much less like a thoughtful critique of a debatable move on M.I.A.'s part, and much more like an empty ploy for publicity.

M.I.A. seems to agree. "I don't support terrorism and never have," she wrote in a statement. "As a Sri Lankan that fled war and bombings, my music is the voice of the civilian refugee. Frankly, I am not trying to start dialogue with someone who is really just seeking self-promotion." [Pitchfork]

Wait, M.I.A. makes music? Who knew?

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 1:41 PM

mia's clothes are the clothes of refugees.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 1:49 PM

MIA's clothes are actually made from the skin of refugees.

Posted by eric | August 7, 2008 1:51 PM

Oh really? Then where'd she get that cutsie suicide belt?

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 1:53 PM

What else is new. BV's message board is full of haters. And a LOT of the same people who loved her two years ago.
People only like you when you down.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 1:54 PM

blah. blah. blahhhhhh.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 1:56 PM

dont care about MIA -whats the word on Iggy and Stooges Gear? any news???!!

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 1:57 PM

DJ Vadim is the TRUE terrorist.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 2:00 PM

So instead of telling us why she glamorizes terrorism, she just says she doesn't support it and then tries to discredit the accuser. Classy.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 2:03 PM

Iggys van was found but the gear is gone.

Posted by Eric | August 7, 2008 2:05 PM

is there any way to block specific artists from showing up on this website when i bring it up on my computer? works great on my netmail server, if only i could do it here too

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 2:12 PM

Also I love the MIA ad BV has up on the side of the website.

Posted by Eric | August 7, 2008 2:19 PM

she sure is gorgeous.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 2:31 PM

this is stupid.
MIA has done nothing wrong, and does not glorify terrorism.
DeLon (who??? btw) is making a desperate attempt to get attention which, apparently, has worked...

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 2:32 PM

MIA's music sucks. Hated her music two years ago, hate it now.
Don't know who DeLon is, but they probably suck too.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 2:37 PM

well it is great that Delon is speaking up because the people of Sri Lanka was silenced with fear of suicide bombings against them for speaking up against the ltte.

And I think that m i a should stop speaking to herself. talking about self promotion, Who, 3 or 4 days after the tsunami, when everyone else was grieving & helping, which publicity seeking biatch claimed to be a freedom fighter and began to glorify the LTTE in the media? And where was Delon then? he who has been making music since the mid 90s was quietly helping at the ground level. he does not need to publicize his acts of kindness.

He speaks up against the ltte because they are trying to divide, scare, and supress the people of Lanka using gurrilla tactics, suicide bombings, extortion, recruiting child soldiers and other atrocities.

m i a has been brainwashed with the ltte agenda

wake up before it is too late!

Posted by Sara Ensmeyer | August 7, 2008 2:37 PM

and if anyone knows self promotion when they see it, its MIA.

Posted by peter | August 7, 2008 2:47 PM

I still want to destroy her from behind.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 2:50 PM

Are BV readers against Immortal Technique too or only M.I.A.? Don't all the hipsters love Ghostface Killah and the Clipse? I just want to be clear about which music is ethically acceptable and which is not.

Posted by Sharkdog | August 7, 2008 3:24 PM

Exactly what? I am the voice of the civilian refugee? How so? When did M.I.A. ever do anything for them?

I support Delon for speaking out and having the guts to speak out. He put a lot on the line for this -- and he is fighting a good fight. Apart from the political side, I also think he's a great performer, who, unlike M.I.A., does not glorify bombs or gunshots.

Posted by Dora | August 7, 2008 3:35 PM

She does glorify terrorism. She raps about blowing up people and how great terrorist organizations like Hamas are while flashing cutsey Tamil tigers on-screen. And OMG GUNSHOT SOUND EFFECTS ARE SOOOO KEWL! THEY MAKE SONG GOOD!

Tamil Tigers: an organization that utilizes terrorism (i.e., the killing of innocents) to achive their political goals in Sri Lanka.

Her father is a founding member. If she supports the group, she, by default, supports terrorism as a legitamite means to their ends.

Supporting a group that uses terrorism doesn't make one a terrorist, per se, but it does make her a supporter of it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 4:01 PM

But what is terrorism? Have you listened to any mainstream rap these days? Is 50 Cent any better just because he talks about gangbanging instead of linking it to a specific political agenda? I am just trying to understand what people are objecting to. I doubt it is the violence, so what exactly is it? And which so called terrorist groups are ok and which aren't? Do we like Irish bands that sing about the IRA but not M.I.A.? How do we feel about songs like Guns of Brixton or I shot the Sherrif? What about Johnny Cash? That guy wrote some violent songs. I think we just don't like this M.I.A. stuff because we don't like the Tamil Tigers although I must admit that it is hard for me to form a real opinion on it since I know virtually nothing about Sri Lanka. I do think terrorism is bad though assuming we define terrorism as violence against unarmed civilians. Does anybody really think M.I.A. supports violence against unarmed civilians? I guess she doesn't.

Posted by Sharkdog | August 7, 2008 4:09 PM

"Does anybody really think M.I.A. supports violence against unarmed civilians?"

If she supports the Tamil Tigers she does.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 4:14 PM

I can't actually believe I am defending M.I.A. because I think she's shite, but when has she ever said she supports the Tamil Tigers? And I am still wondering why everybody is so upset with M.I.A. but let others slide on the violence and sexism in their lyrics. I guess it's the times we live in and the fact that for whatever reason M.I.A. has been wildly successful at sparking a debate due to what is clearly a calculated campaign to do just that. So . . . good for her I guess.

I think the violence and sexism in mainstream American pop culture is of far more concern though than anything this provocative lady from London is doing. Am I wrong about that?

Posted by Sharkdog | August 7, 2008 4:23 PM

"If she supports the Tamil Tigers she does."

The first word in your sentence being the most important.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 4:28 PM

Sharkdog @ 4:23- EXACTLY.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 4:46 PM

"If she supports the Tamil Tigers she does."

"The first word in your sentence being the most important."

So then she DOESN'T support the group her Dad helped to create??

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 4:55 PM

Stop the violence in hip hop.

Posted by KRS-1 (faux) | August 7, 2008 4:56 PM

So then she DOESN'T support the group her Dad helped to create??

------------------

Her father actually was a founding member of a less violent Tamil separtist group that did eventually merge with the Tigers. She has never lived with her father. My father was Hitler does that make me a Nazi?

Posted by Truthserum | August 7, 2008 5:00 PM

"My father was Hitler does that make me a Nazi?"

No, just a douche.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 5:02 PM

"Stop the violence in hip hop."

Hellz no.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 5:04 PM

So sins of the fathers and all that, eh?
Also, I implore all hipsters to stop using the word douche and to expand their vocabularies. Hipsters use the word douche like sorority girls use the word like. Also, please stop using variations of the word ass such as asshat. It just sounds dumb.

Posted by Truthserum | August 7, 2008 5:05 PM

talk about 15 minutes up. she married a rich ted hipster? shocka.

Posted by cy sperling | August 7, 2008 5:12 PM

hahaha

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 5:36 PM

Be smart for a second and form your own opinion based on facts. research the background of M.I.A.'s history as an artist. What she promoted bluntly through her lyrics, clothing, and album covers. You've got to be an airhead to not get her drift and link to the LTTE, her family history and her promotion towards it. Don't form an opinion on something you haven't researched yourself. Google it. Get facts, then you'll see what everyone with a brain and sence of humane is talkign about and trying to spread awarness about. We're not blaming her for her fathers connections, we're trying to get it out there that she is being boastful covertly about her connection with the LTTE.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 6:18 PM

I play it safe and just assume that everybody with her skin pigmentation is a terrorist.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 7:45 PM

"

"Does anybody really think M.I.A. supports violence against unarmed civilians?"

If she supports the Tamil Tigers she does.

"

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 4:14 PM

The same way if you support the American political system you are supporting the death of 500,000 to 1,000,000 unarmed Iraqi civilians. Where Obama at indeed.

Posted by Anonymous | August 7, 2008 7:47 PM

yeah, Obama will fix everything.

so will the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, Hanukkah Harry, and Zeus.

Posted by snappy! | August 7, 2008 8:06 PM

Supporting LTTE : Supporting violence against unarmed Sri Lankan civilians :: Supporting an Iraqi insurgent group : Supporting violence against unarmed Iraqi civilians

NOT

Supporting LTTE : Supporting violence against unarmed Sri Lankan civilians :: Supporting "the American political system" : Supporting violence against unarmed Iraqi civilians

7:47 you are a dumbass douchebag

Posted by Sen. Barack Obama | August 8, 2008 12:04 AM

personally, I think MIA's "politics" aren't even worth in-depth discussion. she makes pretty good dance music.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 12:25 AM

she is like old, wrinkled and saggy now

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 2:26 AM

butta face killah.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 10:21 AM

Is John McCain a terrorist because he dropped bombs on North Vietnam or is M.I.A. a terrorist because she drops records? Seriously, why are we even discussing this?

Posted by Sharkdog | August 8, 2008 12:21 PM

McCain flew in Vietnam, not Korea, dipshit.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 12:28 PM

he didn't say korea, dipshit.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 12:29 PM

12:04 - I finally agree with you on something, Senator.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 12:35 PM

"Does anybody really think M.I.A. supports violence against unarmed civilians?"

"or is M.I.A. a terrorist because she drops records? "

She also drops references to killing, and other violence in the records she drops you morons. It doesn't make her a terrorist but it does mean she promotes her music using terrorist imagery in support of terror groups her family worked with. End of fucking story.

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 7:32 PM

RIP MIA ..............

your career is already finish ......
fund terrorist groups who rape and use kids , and buying cocain ..its a past story for you ..

Posted by MIA=missingInMyAss | August 14, 2008 6:43 AM

This is such bullshit

m.i.a has iraqi women and children pointing at fighter planes in the same video, does that mean she is supporting the Al qaeda terrorist?

then she has cop cars what does mean? she has council flats and home made t shirts with bombs that the government army uses. cell phones, africans, lions, elephants , indian village kids in water melon t shirts, zebra and cheeta and cow print. unfortunately tiger print is the most common and the easiest to find, everyone see it everyday everywhere.

manipulating truth has been part of our oppressors history , this isnt different. if you fight oppression, the oppressor will try take you out, thats the point! u cant stand up against the genocide against Sri lanka because the situation becomes about the tigers yet no body question what happened to the 200, 000 dead tamils at the hands of the government.

MIA sings about being affected by the war, she always made it clear its the civilians that get caught up in the middle.

this isnt wether she supports the tamil tigers because she says doesnt, and the pictures of tigers in her video has other element people want to ignore! what is their agenda in twisting the truth.

this is how far will this go before people actually read between the lines and stop genocide and unfair politics in the whole planet, m.i.a speaks for so many different situations.
