Okkervil River @ Lollapalooza

On the heels of last year's "The Stage Names," its best seller to date, Austin-based rock act Okkervil River returns Sept. 9 with another Jagjaguwar album, "The Stand Ins."

The 11 tracks here were mostly culled from material written and recorded during "The Stage Name" sessions, with the exception of one "Singer Songwriter," which was recorded during a recent tour with the New Pornographers.

Frontman Will Sheff says the band opted not release a double album combining "The Stage Names" in "The Stand Ins" primarily because "I don't like double albums and I really wanted to make a short record. Everybody in the band felt the same way. It was just the case of making a short record and feeling attachment to the songs -- and putting out a part two." [Billboard]

Okkervil River announced a lot more tour dates since the last time I posted dates. Tickets are still on sale for the two shows at Webster Hall. All dates and more pictures from Lollapalooza below...

This is a great band. They were so good at Lolla, though they didn't play any of the new songs. Looking forward to hearing them live at Webster Hall.

Black Sheep Boy is incredible. My favorite album since In The Aeroplane Over The Sea.

Saw them at Sasquatch, it was the best set of the day. Can't wait to see them again in September.

Sheff is truly a throw back to the days of the great song writers, like Neil Young. Don't get me wrong, there not on par with Young, but their songs are so far above what just about everyone else is putting out.

Nothing earth shattering or ground breaking -like Radiohead's in Rainbows, the best record of the year hadns down , OR just cranks out well crafted and written rock n roll. god bless them.

that album leaked ages ago, and it's really good. i love them.

Has anyone heard The Stand Ins? It kind of blows. I love everything else they've put out, but this one just doesn't do it for me. I would still consider them one of my favorite bands, and I'm sure the Webster shows will be great, but as of right now I can't recommend the new one. Hopefully it will grow on me.

I think The Stand-Ins is fantastic. Blue Tulip is easily on my shortlist for song of the year right now. The tune is epic.

Who duets with Sheff on "Lost Coastlines"? Is it Jens Lekman?

Posted by Anonymous | August 8, 2008 12:07 PM

It's Jonathan Meiburg, former Okkervil River dude, now full-time Shearwater main man.
