Godfrey Reggio, Philip Glass & WNYC @ Prospect Park, 7/25/08 (heartonastick)
Philip Glass

Designed as an elegant restaurant with a wine cellar, it will have a two-tier membership program offering private concerts and other events. (At the upper level members can also make their own barrels of wine.)

It will open this fall, Mr. Dorf said, adding that he wanted to have singer-songwriters and jazz performers one or two nights a week. "I really think that all those people who were coming to the Knitting Factory in 1988 and 1991 are going to appreciate how we're developing this space to really enjoy performance and culture," Mr. Dorf said. The first confirmed booking is Philip Glass, who will play four nights in March. [NY Times]

I would like to go to this but too bad I don't make 100k a year.

Philip Glass is yet another one of those Animal Collective minimalist knock-offs (kidding, kidding).

Yeah, it stinks when what once was avant garde and underground becomes elitist and out of reach for younger (poorer) fans.

"Yeah, it stinks when what once was avant garde and underground becomes elitist and out of reach for younger (poorer) fans."

Was the free concert he played last week in Prospect Park (see above picture) out of reach for poorer fans?

Whatever, but playing concerts in private wine bars is ridiculous. Has anyone been to Le Poisson Rouge yet? Lykke Li tickets were only $15 including the service charge - I like how these guys aren't using ticketmaster. Looks like a nice place, too.

I understand (very well) the turn-off of a high-priced venue but where are the people who have grown up (age-wise) and made well for themselves supposed to go to enjoy music? Do you think they want to spend a night in a sh*thole with 25 year olds?

Philip Glass plays at least 1 free or very cheap show in NY a year. While I might not want to go to this place, there's nothing wrong with having a smaller venue having snooty affairs if people want to pay to do that.

snoot snoot snoot

@ Anon 10:32, sorry, you're totally right. I worded that wrong. Glass certainly offers a mix of shows. And at that age, with a long, varied history of performances, you should do whatever the hell you want.

yeah, agreed, but man it would still be great to experience a show of his in a much smaller venue like this one. I saw max richter @ le poisson rouge, and that was such a good, small venue for it. and tickets were like $20.

philip glass at prospect park was ridiculously amazing. i was sitting in the (free) front seats next to a mom and her little girl (awesome) and a high meathead (not-so-awesome since he was shouting on his phone at one point, but still interesting at least).
