mint chip

Every once in a whle I post about food. This is the best thing to happen in the vegan dessert industry since the peanut butter bomb. You can eat it while streaming new albums by Laura Marling, Lykke Li, The Walkmen and Death Vessel (that last sentence was an attempt at bringin' it back to music in the end).

Veganism is not a healthy lifestyle. Most vegans end up eating too many carbs, which can lead to diabetes and other problems later in life. I'm a proud vegetarian and find nothing immoral in eating organic milk products. The cows that are used for milking could not survive on their own in the wild. They have been domesticated over thousand of years and don't mind being farm animals. Cheese is a great source of protein and fat, and necessary to maintain a balanced nutrition if you don't eat meat. Tofu, though wonderful is not an adequate replacement. This 'frozen desert' does sound awesome though.

Posted by vegetarian | August 18, 2008 5:19 PM

"get off your high horse" said the vegan to the vegetarian. oh the irony...
I'm not a big fan of desserts and sweet things in general but this looks fucking rad. almost as great as the avo-nut soup in caravan of dreams.

Actually, vegetarian, veganism is a far healthier lifestyle than that of a vegetarian who consumes dairy, when done right.

As for dairy:

Dairy products contain large amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats, which is considered a major cause of heart disease. In a 1985 study published by the J. Am. Med. Ass. dairy products were the major source of saturated fat and cholesterol for 75 adult vegetarians living in the USA, whose blood levels of cholesterol were higher than those of vegans who ate no dairy produce. Dairy products contain lactose, a milk sugar which the majority of the world's population is actually unable to digest and is often found to be the cause of digestive problems. Casein, the milk protein, has been shown to cause iron deficiency anaemia from internal bleeding in many infants and is suspected of causing juvenile diabetes. Milk products can also be a cause of eczema, rash, mucous buildup, wheezing, asthma, rhinitis, bleeding, pneumonia and anaphylaxis in children and adults.

Also, you claim that dairy is not cruel? You're deluded.

You may as well be a fucking carnivore, for all the good your diet does.

This same brand does. Also with coconut milk. Cookie dough flavor:

vegan? yes. healthy? nope. be sure to take a look at the saturated fat content of this bad boy. one half-cup serving is 40% of your recommended daily value.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 6:30 PM

Thanks for giving us the scoop BV.

This brand also has plenty of gluten free options.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 6:41 PM

You can get it at Perelandra and Back to the Land. Whole Foods in Manhatten has it too. The same company makes So Delicious Coconut Milk Yogurt too. I haven't tried the yogurt yet but I heard it's really good.

This stuff is better for you & actually tastes way more like real ice cream than the soy / tofu stuff.. and I'm no vegan...
unfortunately its not cheap... but it's really amazing. !

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 7:33 PM

"This stuff is better for you & actually tastes way more like real ice cream than the soy / tofu stuff.. and I'm no vegan..."

There is no soy in the coconut milk flavors. Dairy Free. Soy Free.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 7:36 PM

So...back to this Death Vessel album. It's amazing! How come more people aren't talking about it?

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 7:42 PM

Because it's shite.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 7:50 PM

No it isn't. It's great.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 7:56 PM

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 9:08 PM

Goes good after a nice steak.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 9:21 PM

the peanut butter bomb is good, but have you tried the death by chocolate cake?! i'm not vegan or even vegetarian and it is hands down the best chocolate cake i've ever had. mmmm i kinda want to hunt some down right now.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 10:04 PM

I've had non-dairy coconut based 'ice-cream' at a Thai restaurant years ago. It was good, but in a really rich sort of way. I'm curious to see how it compares.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 10:36 PM

take a look at this...take a look at this
CO CO NUT MILK...CO CO NUT MILK...WoW!
5 points to whoever understands

ah sorry.. i didn't read it all the way through ..i've had purely decadent brand before and didnt like it but i guess this one is different than their others...though i don't like coconut much....

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 11:09 PM

good look BV I'll have to check for that
I'm severely lactose intolerant and my favorite non-dairy dessert has been Soy Delicious Dulce de Leche

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 9:37 AM

i haven't tasted it but i tried the vegan coconut milk yogurt they just started making. Ugh. waaaay too much sugar. tasted like melted soy delicious.

have you tried Coconut Bliss?
http://www.coconutbliss.com/
soy delicious is just stealing their steeze. the coconut bliss is seriously the best. for reals. not yet sold on the east coast, so you are missing out big time.

and as for gluten free, soy delicious has a Chocolate Chip cookie dough flavour that is labeled as being gluten free. haven't tried it.

i work in health food and i'm vegan. dig it.

the healthiest lifestyle is moderation.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:05 AM

I'm chiming in about Organic Nectars too. They make delicious vegan and raw ice cream that I believe is gluten free (although it's pricey):

http://www.organicnectars.com/

They're also much lower in saturated fat, like 10-15%.

Pumpkins Organic Market on 8th Ave & 13th St in Brooklyn carries it.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:11 AM

5:19, there is no truth to your claim that 'most vegans end up eating too many carbs.' And your views on the cows and dairy aren't true either. It's statements like those, presented as fact & without statistical evidence, that lead people to have unhealthy diets in the first place. There is plenty of evidence that a vegan diet is healthier- a simple search on the web will show you that.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:14 AM

Where in Brooklyn or Manhattan do they sell the peanut butter bombs? It looks like only at restaurants, etc.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:44 AM

i would also hit it. i would defrost it first though....so it's all soft and receptive....

mmmm.....sweet sweet nondairy dessert product.

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:56 AM

i agree with Mud, i didn't have the yogurt but i had the coconut milk ice cream vanilla one and it was wayyyyy too sweet.

and Anon 10:44am it is mostly at restaurants but you can get it at Atlas on 2nd avenue and 4th street which is more of a cafe and you can just walk in and out

Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 3:39 PM

Thanks to everyone that provided me links to Gluten-Free ice creams. I really appreciate, just hope I can find some here in Nor Cal. Thanks again!

Posted by Honest Abe | August 19, 2008 8:43 PM

"Where in Brooklyn or Manhattan do they sell the peanut butter bombs? It looks like only at restaurants, etc."

Atlas Cafe on 2nd Ave
and a lot of places. I just can't think of them right now.

I love Purely coconut milk cream

Posted by Rice Syrup Corn Protein Agave Quinoa | December 2, 2008 11:35 AM

This is such a find. I'm certainly no vegetarian, but I love coconut milk and this will easily replace my cravings for haagan dasz (sp?). I like that I benefit from the coconut milk and the chicory root....who's ever heard of dessert with fiber? Yum. The only one I've tried so far is the chocolate but I'm looking forward to trying the coconut and the cookie dough. I'm so grateful they make this stuff. The Coconut Bliss has a little better mouth feel, and is a little richer, but both are very acceptable.

Posted by charlotte hansen | January 15, 2009 7:51 PM

This looks good. Is it low-cal too? Wonder if it would be a good choice for people who have had weight loss surgery http://www.wlshelp.com/ and want to indulge in a healthy dessert.

Posted by obesity help | June 1, 2009 2:17 PM

I'm not a big fan of the coconut flavors, they're too rich for me.

@2:17: No, it is definitely not low-calorie, most of the desserts are not much better for you than any other dessert, except they don't have cholesterol. Eating fruits, veggies and plant proteins are usually the best.

For those lucky people who are not calorie-challenged, it's nice to know there are good desserts that don't involve cruelty.

Most of these brands are available for a good $1.50 cheaper at Whole Foods. As for exact flavors, I guess they vary, but Whole Foods really does have the brand name vegan stuff cheaper usually.
