RATM @ Lollapalooza 2008 (more by Bao Nguyen)
Rage Against the Machine

Political rap-rock giants Rage Against the Machine will give a rare performance at Target Center in Minneapolis on Sept. 3, which not so coincidentally is the same week as the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Tickets go on sale Saturday at 10 a.m. for $60.

Target Center's news release for the concert makes no mention of any political overtones, but fans know to expect plenty of verbal fireworks. Rage guitarist Tom Morello has already committed to perform with country-rocker Steve Earle at a union rally Sept. 1 at St. Paul's Harriet Island, the first day of the convention. The band has lashed out at the Bush administration at other shows this year, including last weekend's Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. Morello expressed interest this summer in performing during both party conventions. [Minneapolis Star Tribune]

Steve Earle also has a bunch of NYC shows coming up at Judson Church. Tickets for those are on sale. Rage Against the Machine played a free show at the Democatic National Convention in 2000...
After the performance, a small group of attendees congregated at the point in the protest area closest to the DNC, facing the police officers, throwing rocks, and possibly engaging in more violent activity, such as throwing glass, concrete and water bottles filled with "noxious agents," spraying ammonia on police and slingshotting rocks and steel balls. The police soon after declared the gathering an unlawful assembly, shut off the electrical supply, interrupting performing band Ozomatli, and informed the protestors that they had 15 minutes to disperse on pain of arrest. Some of the protestors remained, however, including two young men who climbed the fence and waved black flags, who were subsequently shot in the face with pepper spray. Police then forcibly dispersed the crowd, using tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets. At least six people were arrested in the incident.
Some video footage from that, and all tour dates below....

If this was any more anticlimactic, it would be a prequel.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:31 PM

This has The Architect, Karl Rove's, fingerprints all over it. The Mnpls show is an ingenious plan to turn joe midwestener, and his fear of loud, minority rawkus peeps, against the Dems. Brilliant!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:31 PM

this is definitely going to get out of hand. at least one band is taking a stand. hopefully there will be mass protests a la chicago 68.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:34 PM

Give it up Zack....don't you realize that the angst-ridden teens you once preached to are now grown ups listening to wimpy indie pop. Jeeeez!!!

ps - Where were you guys 4 years ago????

Coporate Marxist Rockers - Can it get any more oxymoronic?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:37 PM

why do people have to complain about everything? At least they're doing something? There are new kids out there left to inspire. And maybe, just maybe, they will cause a few people to open their minds and influence who they vote for...or vote at all.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:41 PM

RAGE's scare middle america to vote for the white guy concert - TOTALLY!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:42 PM

They're playing the Target Center?!
For $60 f*cking dollars?!
And you have to go through ticketmaster?!

RATM is bullsh*t.

There are some big bands out there that have proved time and time again that you can be big and relevant and still stay true to your sh*t (FUGAZI anyone?)

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:45 PM

Has anyone heard if this show has been cancelled now that Obama has moved away (some say "flip-flopped") from his earlier Liberal policy statements?

"why do people have to complain about everything? At least they're doing something? There are new kids out there left to inspire. And maybe, just maybe, they will cause a few people to open their minds and influence who they vote for...or vote at all."

MAN do you need an ass whooping!

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:46 PM

aw man, sweet. its great we can all violently protest cuz we live in such a shitty country. like last week, when my mom and dad were killed, my sister was raped and i still haven't gotten any clean drinking water cept for that stuff in the ditch that made me vomit blood...

oh, wait.

Remember when McCain was in Wedding Crashers? Man that was awesome.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:53 PM

Great. A politics thread, so out come the conservatives. Shouldn't you guys be out picketing abortion clinics instead of posting on Brooklyn Vegan?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 2:58 PM

If they truly do rage against the "machine" then a show in Denver is also approprate. Especially as the Democratic platform, at least when compared to the GOP's, calls for bigger gov't, and more gov't control over the individual.

Posted by Honest Abe | August 5, 2008 3:00 PM

I'd like them to shove McCain's gimp arm up his own ass.

Honest Abe: Shut up.

They don't. RATM is a joke.

Both the Dems and Repubs represent the machine, and to think otherwise is to step in line like good little sheep.

Posted by Honest Abe | August 5, 2008 3:17 PM

yeah... who cares if we have someone with any intelligence representing our country? Might as well have a dipshit, graduated near last in his class, traitor rather than someone who is articulate and has a high IQ.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 3:37 PM

I know. Better to settle for an intelligent socilaist who "distances" himself from his racist, anti-Semetic buddies so he can get elected.

"why do people have to complain about everything? At least they're doing something? There are new kids out there left to inspire. And maybe, just maybe, they will cause a few people to open their minds and influence who they vote for...or vote at all."

If you are influenced by RATM, you have more serious issues.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 4:33 PM

hahaha - I'm still laughing about the "right on "Target"" comment.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 4:42 PM

"Great. A politics thread, so out come the conservatives. Shouldn't you guys be out picketing abortion clinics instead of posting on Brooklyn Vegan?"

Shouldn't you be trying to steal my money through gov't taxation? Oh, right, you are. Want "free" heatlthcare? "Free" tuition? Try earning it instead of robbing everybody else.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 5:07 PM

"Great. A politics thread, so out come the conservatives. Shouldn't you guys be out picketing abortion clinics instead of posting on Brooklyn Vegan?"

I find it to be pretty pathetic how certain liberals on here are always trying to stereotype all Republicans (aka, half the country).

What happened to this scene?

"yeah... you keep sucking up that Fox News propaganda.

Actually, I'm not a Republican, don't watch Fox (except for soccer), and pay the highest percentage of taxes possible in NYC...myself. Obama's spiritual leader for the last 20 years is a racist and anti-Semite - it's a fact. But don't let the facts stand in the way of your ideology, genius.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 9:02 AM

It's also a fact that McCain's "spiritual leaders" are racist anti-semites who don't believe in evolution. He is a war monger, a shill of the oil companies and a traitor.

I'll take the guy with the wacky preacher... thanks.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 9:20 AM

When Morello was asked why published with a corporate as Sony he went something like this.

I had 2 options, either doing as Ian McKaye @ Dischord, being a manager of myself and not having time to play my message few time and in front of 1 thousand people, or let Sony do all the marketing, and I am free to play more and say the same things to millions.

Choices. Now, as long as RATM say what they say, I don't care if it is Dischord or Sony. It is spreading the message which is important.

All the white people who are secretly racist love the Rev. Wright situation because it gives them a reason to publicly hate on Obama by claiming he's the racist. I remember kids like this growing up. They were the ones complaining about affirmative action while they were applying to college, blaming minorities instead of their shitty grades every time they got denied from a school.

"It's also a fact that McCain's "spiritual leaders" are racist anti-semites"

(Not a fact unless supported by factual evidence. If McCain was connected to anti-Semites, it'd be all over. Nice smear, though.)

"He is a war monger"

(As someone who lost close friends on 9/11, I'm for taking out Islamic terrorists, whther they be in Iraq, Iran or bumblefuck, USA. Pacifism is an oxymoron.

"a shill of the oil companies"

(Is that why he doesn't want to drill in Anwar? You're seriously an idiot.)

"and a traitor."

(Just like all the POWs who spent 6 years getting messed up by the Vietnemese, right?)

You're too funny.

Never watch Fox, and am no republican. But if you think having a president that is for taking out hostime regimes on their way to getting nukes vesus one that would rather "dialogue" with those regimes is inconsequential, yes, you are, in fact, an idiot.

A) Obama has admitted his previous drug use as well, so let's not even get into a worthless topic there.

B) Maybe you should look at the economy over a 10-20 year period instead of focusing on the past 12 months. Economies are cyclical. That is just the way it is. We are still at very low historical unemployment rates. Some of you people have no perspective at all. You see 12 months behind you and 12 months ahead of you and forget about everything else. And, by the way, the current downturn in the economy has nothing to do with the war. It has to do with housing prices collapsing because too many people bought houses they could not afford.

C) You can talk all about how this war is "illegal", but the intel used in deciding whether or not to attack Iraq was provided by a Democratic appointee (George Tenet) and as I remember, the war was approved by Congress, which included plenty of your precious Democrats.

Posted by CN | August 6, 2008 10:48 AM

They fell for the administration's (who were set on finding a war from day one) very elaborate scam.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 10:58 AM

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

10:44- how do you propose we go about "taking out hostime [sic] regimes on their way to getting nukes" when we're still stuck in Iraq (after 5 years) and Afghanistan (almost 7). Whose army are we going to "take them out" with? Seriously, you sound like a 12 year old who's seen too many Chuck Norris movies. I MEAN REALLY.

Posted by none of the above | August 6, 2008 11:05 AM

its odd how those impoverished by conservative policies are so quick to defend it .. but when you mix patriotism and faith with politics, the fanaticism is easily justified .. which makes one condone war over diplomacy .. just curious 10:44AM, if the news media didn't discuss Iran being such a potential threat, which it most certainly is not, would you even be discussing it?

what is important is that our administration begins holding itself accountable for its actions, whether it is a former white house press secretary's allegations or an alaskan senator misappropriating funds.

i support obama merely because i believe that he will move away from congressional cronyism and award positions based on merit, not a complicated spoils system that the conservative party maintains.

everyone needs to read a news paper and stop hiding behind bumper sticker politics .. if you're going to engage in a discussion, why not do it with some civility and politeness, and please, explain whatever it is that you're saying .. don't just declare this or that .. if you're educated on an issue, show it. otherwise, you truly are full of sht

"if the news media didn't discuss Iran being such a potential threat, which it most certainly is not, would you even be discussing it?"

In the most civil, polite way, you're clueless. Ahmadinejad, while seeking to acquire nukes, talks shit about detroying Israel and fighting the West and US, involving the destruction of his entire nation if need be, everyday It's coming straight from the their leader's mouth - not Hannity, Larry King etc, but from the AP.

Keep that head in the sand, though, and it will all be sunshine and butterfiles.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 11:44 AM

im clueless? what about military reports that cite that iran does not have the missile capabilities of launching a nuclear weapon that could REACH the united states. and while he may have a strong desire to attack Israel

i think its funny that you take the time to spell the Iranian leader's name correctly, but mispell everything else and use ambiguous phrasing like "talks shit about detroying Israel and fighting the West and US,"

oh he's talking shit?
he wants to "fight" the West and the US?

what are you talking about? do you have any reasoning behind your line of argumentation or is it all just "stuff"? and since when is the corporate owned AP considered to be a legitimate news source? AP is for syndicated newspapers like USAToday and other alarmist, diversion based media.

I'm starting to think that you're just putting on this whole attitude as a persona. Like Andrew WK.

to continue my thoughts on israel...

if iran does mean to harm israel, then why hold an entire country of civilians accountable for the desire of their imposed leader?

peaceful deliberation is the only reasonable option. being a war mongering separatist is simply ignorant and naive.

Posted by eric | August 6, 2008 11:59 AM

First off, please forgive any spelling errors - commenting on BV while working tends to foster them.

I guess you're right, might as well wait until the Iranians get better missile capability before being concerned that a mad man is on his way to acquiring technology that can destroy cities with ease.

Do a search for Ahmadinejad and his quotes and maybe, maybe you'll be able to figue out that they guy is "talking shit," meaning making veiled threats to the US and our allies. Or maybe not b/c you're seemingly an idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 12:05 PM

Ahmadinejad is just playing to his base (Islamic zealots)... much like your men Bush/McCain play to their slack-jawed redneck, jesus-loving base.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 12:09 PM

"if iran does mean to harm israel, then why hold an entire country of civilians accountable for the desire of their imposed leader?"

(Stretegic, targeted attacks on their nuke facilities isn't holding the citizens accountable. Not the US's fault that the barbarian regime in charge over there put these facilities in civilian areas ON PURPOSE.)

"peaceful deliberation is the only reasonable option. being a war mongering separatist is simply ignorant and naive."

(Peaceful deliberation will stop a madman from acquiring nukes? Bahahahahahahahha. Who are you? Neville Chamberlin?

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 12:19 PM

I'm sure your warmongering friends in Israel would disagree with a lot of what I have to say! Israel has about the same ratio of idiots to reasonable people as America- 50/50

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 12:21 PM

Now I know you're an idiot as there is, in fact, a difference bewteen "warmongering" and proactively trying to stop a madman from nuking you out of existence. For some reason, idiots like you and the MoveOn crowd fail to understand that...oh, wait, that's cuz you're all idiots.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 12:26 PM

"might as well wait until the Iranians get better missile capability before being concerned that a mad man is on his way to acquiring technology that can destroy cities with ease."

So you tell me, as you speak with an air of pretention and knowledge on these matters. How will Iran "acquire nukes" if it as easy as you imply? How will they acquire the technology to attack America with said "nukes"? What country is providing them with this technology? Where are the funds to support such a potential attack? Simply put, where is the intelligence to back up these claims?

Is there any evidence to what you're saying?

Or is it possible that you're merely regurgitating alarmist nonsense?

You seem very intent on deposing this "threat" so you must have been exposed to some evidence, or are you simply going on a whim? So far, the only evidence you've stated is that Ahmadinejad has openly threatened America and Israel. Those words are empty as what you've typed here today.

Posted by eric | August 6, 2008 12:35 PM

"How will Iran "acquire nukes" if it as easy as you imply?"

(The way they are now. They have their nuclear sites openly working round the clock to weaponize uranium for that purpose. Do a fact search wherever you like. Or do you think that the 5 party MULTI-NATIONAL talks to keep a nuclear bomb out of their hands are just for fun? And they'll mostly likely acquire the capability with the help of the Russians, North Koreans and any other regime that seeks to help them.)

This is fun, this poli sci refresher course, but I gotta get some work done now.

Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 12:49 PM

What's this nonsense about half the country being Republican? Not all adult citizens are registered to vote, and of those who are, not all are registered as either Democrat or Republican -- there's a large number of independents.
