Rock The Bells @ Jones Beach, pics & video, TONS of guests
by Black Bubblegum
Q-Tip with A Tribe Called Quest at Rock The Bells, 8/3/08 (villageslum.com)

King Khan pretty much ruled, but maybe, the award for show of the day could go to Rock The Bells at Jones Beach...
"Mos Def was joined by Talib Kweli for a series of Black Star songs including "Definition," "Respiration" and "Brown Skin Lady."......with Pharoahe Monch joining former label-mates on stage for a boisterous performance of "Simon Says."....Slick Rick joined his Def Jam proteges [ED: Method Man & Redman] briefly for a partial performance of "La Di Da Di,"....... After Raekwon, who performed earlier with Ghostface returned to the stage, EPMD followed, performing "Strictly Business" and "So What Cha Saying." Washington DC's DJ Kool entered the set, performing "Let Me Clear My Throat,"...... Upon the set closing, Keith Murray completed the Def Squad triad with a performance, without Sermon at the time, of "Rapper's Delight."
.....the largest crowd reaction came from Nas speaking to the crowd about how he needs to "breathe." Repeating the word, DJ Green Lantern played the instrumental to "Success," prompting a Yankee-cap tucked low Jay-Z to rush on the stage.... and perform his first verse..... the two then performed "Black Republicans."
.... A Tribe Called Quest headlined the night joined by luminaries such as Busta Rhymes on "Scenario" as well as Consequence.
Other guests.... included DJ Premier, M.O.P., Jeru Da Damaja, Biz Markie, Skyzoo, Mickey Factz and others. "

Nice first. Racist.

the only hip hop im into is pretty much everyone in this lineup. probably the best hip hop show ever.

rock the bells last year was totally shitty. this sounds one hundred times better.

I almost wish I'd gone, then I remembered that the venue sucks, and I don't feel so bad.

Nothing like a hip-hop concert where the audience is 70% white middle class. The line-up was amazing, but if it was anything like last year (or this year in Baltimore)there were more black people on stage than in the crowd.
Not good, bad or indifferent, just an observation.

rap does not suck, this show was obviously amazing despite the venue, and you people are all on crack. but then again, this blog isn't really geared toward hip-hop.

sounds like a pretty awesome event.

Not true.
Those come from me.
I have a blog on highsnob.

Actually, the turnout was half and half this year. The combo of wu-tang and Rage was what made the BROS come out in abundance last year.

Not noted in the initial posting above - Dres from Black Sheep performed "The Choice is Yours" with De La Soul. That was fantastic.
I felt bad/frustrated for those slated for the 2nd stage - when the show started in the amphitheater around 3pm, everyone left the 2nd stage for their seats. The 2nd stage had some great acts - DJ Blaqstarr, Wale, Spankrock with Santogold and MURS (who was amazing). And why Afrika Bambaataa was put on the 2nd stage, I will never understand. He should have been on the main stage.
Truly great show.

Anon 5:16 is right. This site is more photoshoped than a Maxim cover. I demand the green on Q's shoulder return. Green Alien Speck on Q-Tip Was A CONSPIRACY. Don't hide the truth, bv. Don't give in to the man.

niggaplease-- and Cypress Hill. they loved them.
even tho this concert sounds tremendous, i have seen all these acts multiple times in the last 3-4 years, so i'm cool (with the exception of the Pharcyde). i HATE jones beach with a passion so i never would've gone.

Pharcyde aint nuttin' to fuk wit.

The dry, sober crowd rubbed off on the performers and they almost seemed disrespected by the reaction they were getting. I felt bad that Boston by far showed up NY in a big way. When Tribe came on, Boston went crazy, NY not as much.
