Steve Foley, final drummer for the Replacements, dead at 49
by CD

Sad news - Steve Foley, who played drums with the Replacements and with Tommy Stinson's post-Replacements project Bash & Pop, has passed away at the age of 49. According to reports in the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Foley died this past weekend in Minneapolis of an accidental overdose of prescription medication. By all reports, Foley was a gentle soul who looked back on his Replacements days with wonder and gratitude:
"Some days I walk down the street and go, 'God, I was in that [expletive] band?' Unbelievable. It is."Steve Foley was a member of the Replacements for all of their All Shook Down touring, including, of course, their final show at Grant Park in Chicago on July 4, 1991.
Video for 'When It Began,' the All Shook Down clip that prominently features Foley, and a fascinating promotional documentary short on the making of the video, below...

RIP, skins man. The only time I got to see the Mats, he was behind the kit. I give thanks for that.
PW seemed remarkably together in the making of the video thing. He also kinda looks like Fonzie.

Three comments? Three? That's it? I don't even like the fucking band and even I think this is sad.

i knew steve briefly when i lived in minneapolis. he was one of the nicest, coolest, most genuine people i knew. and a great drummer. to say that it is a huge shame he died for no reason than a few extra mgms of some prescribed pills is i think the definition of tradgedy. a nicer guy could not have met a more bummer ending.

I only knew Steve for a short time, but it didn't take long to know what a funny, sweet, and cool guy he was. He had the cool hair, quirky specs, and that sly grin that killed me everytime. It is so sad that the world has lost him and his music. Peace and love to you, Steve.

Steve was a great guy, gentle soul. Funeral was packed, many friends and family present with upbeat stories to share about Steve - it's an absolutely georgous day here in Minneapolis - a day I'm sure Steve would have loved. Tragic.
To everything turn turn turn.

Thanks for posting this. I'm just kind of cruising the web tonight, remembering Steve and I came across your site.
I'd never seen the 'making of' video.
He was so young. If I could, I would thank him for helping the 'Mats remain the best band there ever was.
