"I remember the first time we played Long Island," a firm and fit Sting told Jones Beach about seven songs into The Police's Monday night show. "We played My Father's Place. Well, not my father's place, but your Father's Place. And then we came back and played the Nassau Coliseum."

Nostalgia is good . . . in small doses. And last night's historic Police concert at the Nikon Theater at Jones Beach hit the spot. For more than an hour and a half, the Anglo-American trio -- calling it quits (again) after Thursday's show at Madison Square Garden -- played with the exuberance of a band half its age. Say what you will about Sting, the man looks and sounds good. Still. Drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers, though not as physically well-preserved as their bass-playing boss, have more chops than a kung-fu flick. Still.

Throw in opening act Elvis Costello and the Imposters (whose keyboardist, Steve Nieve, and drummer, Pete Thomas, are from the Attractions), and, well, you have the makings of a WLIR concert that could have taken place in the early '80s at the Malibu... [Newsday]

The Police & Elvis Costello are back at Jones Beach tonight (August 5). The Police also play MSG on Thursday. More pictures from last night's show below...

Posted by michaelways | August 5, 2008 3:29 PM

Sting looks like Anthony Hopkins in 'The Edge'.

"who has aged the worst here?"

the girl in the jean skirt. you shoulda seen her when she was 15.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 3:32 PM

gotta say, the police sounded as expected, but elvis was a touch disappointing. not so much elvis, as how loud nieve's keyboard was in the mix and all the weird shit he was playing that actually distracted from the songs.

Hipsters take note: that man Sting is a stud. In tip top shape. Don't even get me started on his sexual capabilities.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 3:49 PM

When she was 15? What was that a whole 3 months ago.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 3:50 PM

Stewart Copeland is God's gift to drumming.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 3:51 PM

I'd take Elvis Costello over Sting ANY day of the week.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 3:54 PM

Pete Thomas ain't too bad either.

Posted by michaelways | August 5, 2008 3:55 PM

The girl in the skirt is well into her mid-twenties, maybe closer to 30, you guys can still be the judge of how well she aged though, I'll just take the photos...

"Stewart Copeland is God's gift to drumming."

Yes, and God must have thought that he was going to have it too easy, so he gave him Sting, cause having a pain in the ass, helps you stay humble.

"Don't even get me started on his sexual capabilities."

You do know that he gets aroused by looking at himself?

By the way, Sting is doing a good job at looking like Popeye on steroids.

I was laughing at the joke, just figured I would let you know the that the backstory was better than the front and apparently to the enjoyment of others her ass is now sanctioned as "BV Commentor Acceptable".

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 4:36 PM

I am so glad that pic of the girls ass is part of this post since it's so f*cking relevant.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 4:38 PM

a BV photo set just wouldn't make the cut without a smarmy "lurking perv" shot thrown into the mix. let's hear it for the ladies! ladies? ... ladies...?

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 4:50 PM

Sting sorta looks like Bob Mould in those photos, but with a hair weave.

Posted by Anonymous | August 5, 2008 4:57 PM

you've never seen the horrifically disturbing photos of sting doing nude yoga on the beach? his "sexual capabilities" looked pretty tiny to me.

"lurking perv" is the perfect description for that fanny shot.
Is the camera man crouched down around the corner of that fence or something?

It was the (insert "best show of all time" or "show of the year")

I'm too young, but my dad told me stories about "My Father's Place" in Roslyn, and from all accounts, it was one of the greatest music venues ever.

The girl in the skirt is your girl friend, Anon??? - she's my WIFE!!!!!!

Sting looks ready for a bony, sweaty tantric sex marathon.

Folks - hate to burst a bubble but the "she" in the now famous skirt is a "he". I shot the photo. When the young "lady" turned around, it appeared as if she was hiding Sting's mike between her gammies.
