The Police (last show ever) @ MSG - videos, setlist, NYPD
words by Nick Masi
photo from the Jones Beach show (more by Eric Townsend)

The Police played what was being billed as their final concert ever last night at Madison Square Garden (August 7, 2008). The 150th show of their reunion tour, which started in 2007, wrapped up at New York City's famed arena.
They opened with a cover of Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love," and then went into their own catalog...with a bang! The group brought out the NYPD marching band and had them line the front of the stage. Banging their drums in unison with Stewart Copeland, they all went into a raucous version of "Message In A Bottle." From that point on the show never slowed down. All the hits were played, except for "Spirits In The Material World"(my favorite Police song) and "Man In A Suitcase." They also covered Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze" and Manfred Mann's "Do Wah Diddy," which led into their own, "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da." Sting took time out to thank his band mates for their companionship and support, even added some comic relief by saying, "The real triumph of this tour is that we haven't strangled each other."
During the encore, the video screens showed Sting backstage, shirtless, getting his full beard shaved by two women while crew members shined his shoes and Stewart kissed him! The crowd ate it up, laughing and screaming until they came back onstage. After playing "So Lonely" and a few others, The Police let the crowd know that they were officially done. They brought out a "Fat Lady" (actually not a lady) to sing (lip sync) opera on stage, which then turned into the Looney Toons theme and Porky Pig saying, "That's All Folks!" If the "Fat Lady" did indeed sing and this really was the final performance by The Police, they did it not only with energy, class and flair, but with humor.

drummer needs some more cymbals

say what you will about sting post-police, but this was a great show. i was a skeptic going in, but i was impressed. capacity crowd was on their feet the entire time - it was impossible not to have fun. it's been a long time since i've seen a drummer or guitar player that good. pricey ticket, but worth every penny (proceeds went to non-profits).

"drummer needs some more cymbals".....
you are a dumbass. Draw yourself a warm bath, get in... relax, and cut your wrists.
Stewart Copeland is one of the best drummers alive. Period. Sure, The Police are a huge stadium band, and maybe that ain't your bag. But they also paid their dues. They were playing small clubs like CB's while your father was listening to REO Speedwagon, playing slap-ass with his frat brothers and date-raping your mother.

wow, you are really angry, 3:21. deep breaths.

It was an amazing show, but that set list isn't right. They definitely played demolition man at one point, and the definitely did not play truth hits everybody. I know because I would have had a coronary if they had.
And Purple Haze was in the encore.

Drummer needs fewer cymbals?

3:21, what is your problem? not funny, not on point, not anything except filled with hate ... get help.

Stewart Copeland is Gods gift to drumming.

I was there in the front row, and the performance was flawless. The place was rocking, and the upper concrete tiers of MSG were literally undulating with the force of thousands of people on their feet!
You could tell the fellas really had fun with the set, and it was great to see them end their tour (permanently?) in perfect form. Don't Stand So Close to Me was a highlight, as were his daughters on stage. It was a genuine moment, you can tell he's a proud father.
Excellent rendition of Purple Haze

I think 3:21 is funny. sorry... i do.

4:46, where in the front row were you? I was directly in front of Sting. Shaved head, black shirt, fan club member. Loved the show!

Purple Haze seems like a really funny choice of a cover for them.

I'm with 3:00. Great write up!
Seems like an awful short set, though. oh well.

you're a douchebag. a perfect example of some of the people, unfortunately, posting here who have decided to not pay attention to music before pitchfork.

"Purple Haze seems like a really funny choice of a cover for them."
The two covers, purple haze and sunshine, were shoutouts to other 3 piece bands.

I actually really loved last nights show. it was really entertaining and they sounded really good.

Dude, the drummer's got hella old balls!

I would've preferred a few more Power Trio covers.
That, and "Born In the 50's."

Show was absolutely incredible...I took my 17 yr old son and it was a night neither of us will soon forget...The two covers they did were sterling tributes to a couple of rocks power Trios...the band was tight...Sting sounded absolutely flawless and spiced up a few tunes with a new flavor, his bass guitar was pounding..Andy was impeccable on guitar his signature riffs and guitar licks rang out like a crying farewell to the packed Garden...Stewart Copeland was an absolute GENIUS on the drums especially during "Wrapped Around Your Finger" he was a freak of percussion-more cymbals ? I think not!! This guy absolutely HURT the drums the way he pounded them all night...also one other note to fans, Sting's daughter's came out to 'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" not "Don't Stand so Close To Me" and proceeded to have unbridled fun and lose their minds onstage which I thought was awesome especially his youngest girl...kudos and NYPD hats off to "THE NYPD" Marching Band, they brought the house down,... the show was electric from start to finish...and the B-52s were OUTRAGEOUS it was like listening to their albums (am I showing my age?) they have never sounded better !! Fred and the girls tore up the Garden, what a great great great show! ...After hearing the B-52s set my son asked if we could go get a t-shirt before they were sold out, he and I, as well as the rest of the Garden were blown away by the B-52s !! We paid $50(a donation to public television channels 13 and 21) the day before show for sections behind stage that were opened up and were completely satisfied, anyone who says this was not a good show needs to seek a rock shrink...once again one of the better shows I've seen in my life and believe me I've seen quite a few, congrats to the B-52s and The Police for not failing to deliver on a great show and careers...Best to both groups in the future and hope the fat lady hasn't really sung for either of you!!!! If she has then it was truly a remarkable sendoff to a few lifelong fans!! Thanks to The Police and the B-52s stellar performances by both !! THAT'S ALL FOLKS!!!!!

...and Sting's two oldest daughters are HOT! I didn't want them to leave the stage!

The show was pretty good, not amazing. I am happy to be able to say I saw them live, but I thought they should or would have used more guest appearences (really enjoyed the NYPD marching band...thought they should have brought some horns in too at some point(and maybe played Rehumanize Yourself instead of Demolision Man!) I thought some of their transitions from song to song we're kind of sloppy too, and I heard many in the crowd hitting higher notes than Sting was....Stuart is still an amazing drummer, they all still rock, just would have liked to have seen a little more energy and thought put into "their last show ever".

The show up at SPAC with Elvis Costello was also great. 2:35 & 3:06 obviously ate alot of paint chips as children.

if you are still wondering why they chose purple haze as a cover, you didn't smell what was wafting from the dressing rooms.

I too was at the show! Saw them in 1978 in Godalming (england for the americans) and paid a pound to see their first gig! Remember Peanuts and Fall out?. 30 Years later and I take my 17 year old daughter Europe to invest more dollars into a flagging US economy! Worth every penny. The show was Brilliant, Fantastic or as the yanks like to say, "awesome". God I hate that word now! Some of you reckon they will get back together and regroup a final time, they did that. Its all over!!!!!! Get over it! Oh and by the way,,,,,,,Remember that poster hanging in the foyer at MSG? The guy rolling it up and taking it away? That was me! one fan offered $500 for it on the spot. It has pride of place in my house now along with the autographed albums, photos and memoribilia I have collected since 1978 Milton Keynes and Regatta de Mud!!!!!!! The "Fat lady sings" was a brilliant ending!
