The Walkmen played Bowery Ballroom & Fox News (video)

NY Press: How did you guys end up spending so much time on the bus?The awkward Fox News segment aired yesterday morning (Aug 18, 2008) - the same day The Walkmen played their first of two shows at Bowery Ballroom in NYC in support of their new album that is streaming at AOL (thx Eric). The Walkmen's Hamilton Leithauser: I live in Manhattan, Pete and Walt live in Brooklyn, and Matt and Paul live in Philadelphia. We were doing the trip two days a week and they were coming up once or twice as well-- sometimes neither camp wanted to make the trip. It was actually probably a good thing for writing, because it put a certain pressure on the times the five of us were together. Our practice space in Chelsea was an on-again-off-again illegal nightclub, so some Mondays we'd come in and the place would be absolutely disgusting--poorly cleaned up vomit on the stage and bottles everywhere. The toilets, which were on the second floor, leaked and dripped down through the ceiling, so occasionally it would hit you on the head. In Philadelphia, we rented a space from our friends for $75 a month...If it's moderately cold outside, it's 20 degrees colder inside, and vice versa if it's hot.
They do it again tonight with The Muslims who are also playing Union Pool on Wednesday with Howlies.

how was the show? cant wait for tonight.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:01 AM
the listing at the Bowery Ballroom had the Muslims at 9:30 and the Walkmen at 10:30. From what I remember that's pretty accurate, give or take 5 minutes.
Posted by butternuts | August 19, 2008 10:04 AM
Yeah, Walkmen around 10:30. I loved last night. Heavy on the new album, of course (so I hope you've been listening) but damn, that guy's voice is out of this world.
Posted by Foster | August 19, 2008 10:17 AM
that fox segment was indeed awkward.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:18 AM
"Where do we get our inspiration from guys?"
what did they protest all the way to the fox studio that they didn't want to do that spot? i'm not saying that anyone has to do cartwheels but affecting that bullshit aloofness is lame. sure that anchor is a moron but everyone knows why you agreed to do it. what a twat.
Posted by dola | August 19, 2008 10:26 AM
where is this chelsea hot spot with vomit and piss drips? i want in.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:30 AM
Give me a break. These guys are somewhat successful and from what I can tell and have heard through friends none of them come from what anyone would describe as lower class backgrounds. So why do they feel its necessary (this is the 2nd or 3rd intv Ive read with them)to make it sound like they are piss poor and living on the streets. Its a real joke.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:45 AM
man that fox news anchor was dumb, i'd hit it
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 10:54 AM
Jodi Applegate's such a hoooooooah.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 11:14 AM
I love Jodi, and I feel bad for her. She was just trying to be nice. She isn't a hipster though, and probably doesn't listen to The Walkmen. Why was he a dick to her though? The girl was just doing her job.
Posted by michaelways | August 19, 2008 11:17 AM
just because you might come from a privileged doesn't mean your parents are paying for your rehearsal space.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 11:17 AM
edit: just because you might come from a privileged background doesn't mean your parents are paying for your rehearsal space.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 11:18 AM
Jesus, can that guy come off any more arrogant? "Where do we get our inspiration from guys? Each other? Yeah that's it..." Sorry man, if you don't want the exposure then don't agree to do the spot in the first place. I actually felt bad for the anchor. If you're going to have the gaul to go on a Right Wing channel to promote your CD in the first place, don't sit there and act put off by it. It only makes you seem like more of a shallow douche.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 11:21 AM
Well Fox 5 isn't necessarily right wing, it's the Fox News channel that is. I like Good Day New York. I don't get why they got rid of Ron Corning though. This new guy is a square and a half.

when Jodi Applegate was on vacation, my mornings just weren't the same.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 11:34 AM
I know man. Rock hard times.

i prefer sada baderinwa.

i saw the show last night. Pretty disappointing if you ask me. Ham's voice is still pretty awesome but the rest of the band really lacks the energy they had when I would see them back in 2004/2005. That and they have really gone mellow. Listening to their first few records, they used to really rock out. Now they are totally subdued. It's a shame cause when you hear a song like the "The Rat", you are reminded of what once was. Now, they just seem so disinterested with what they are doing. It's a shame.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:06 PM
The Rat is their most up-tempo song. It's the black sheep of their career. I think they're better at slower, more growing songs.
Posted by michaelways | August 19, 2008 12:08 PM
cut the guy some slack. jesus.
I thought the interview was hilarious (and indeed awkward).
great band with a great new record.
so hamilton wasn't thrilled with answering the retarded questions of jodi applegate.
big fucking deal.
and who gives a shit about where or what they come from.
get over yourselves.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:08 PM
Is the show sold out?
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:12 PM
How the heck else would you answer that question?
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:15 PM
Great band with a great new record? That song sounded abysmal, maybe you should get over yourself 12:08. The jury's out, the guy's a douche and the band sounds like elevator music.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:23 PM
wolf songs for lambs..... anyone?
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:25 PM
I like elevator music.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:27 PM
elevator music is for elevators not morning shows.
or anything else for that matter.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 12:33 PM
This band writes bland songs, is boring live (tried 3x to dig them), and is apparently not humble -- bad combo regardless of their wealthy backgrounds. As a contrast, the members of Fugazi came from pretty well-to-do families and yet they earn respect both on record and live without coming off as arrogant twats.
Posted by greg | August 19, 2008 12:53 PM
"How the heck else would you answer that question?"
How about shocking the world with a smidgen of sincerity? If you aren't 'thrilled with answering the retarded questions of jodi applegate', it's very simple: don't fucking do it. That's the whole point. Maybe people sipping their coffee and getting ready for work would like to hear a (temporarily) sustaining musician ruminate on where his inspiration comes from. It's not a delicate flower that's going to whilt under the fucking sunlight.
It's like when Chad Curtis and the rest of the Yankees were protesting Jim Gray for asking Pete Rose tough questions, but then still used the opportunity during the post-game to say hi to his grandma. Where's Chad Curtis now? Listening to these sorry fucks, probably.
Posted by dola | August 19, 2008 12:59 PM
i like the walkmen, but surely even they've seen enough of these types of interviews to know what they're getting themselves into.
they should take lessons from king buzzo on that awful 'redeye' show.... i mean, he's got years of experience on these guys, but still....
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:13 PM
Wow that last guy took it really hard.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:17 PM
greg..Walkmen are far from boring live. Been seeing them since 2002 and they get better and more intense as time goes on.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:20 PM
fox show wasn't that bad. what the hell are you all talking about.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:22 PM
they should stop shopping at JCrew!
somebody get them a stylist quick!
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:29 PM
and are you lil' guys in a band, too?
ok so she's not hip, but that shit ain't right.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:33 PM
OOh Chad Curtis is dreamy!
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:33 PM
jodi applegate = morning wood, NO DOUBT
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:40 PM
Jodi Applegate has a hot ass.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:44 PM
I am soooooo sick of people who can't get over "The Rat." Yes, it was a fantastic rock song, but thank goodness the band continues to explore new territories with their songwriting & recording. They were always too good, too schooled in the history of American popular music, and too promising to stick with just one formula.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 1:47 PM
Sounds like a press release to me.
Posted by michaelways | August 19, 2008 1:55 PM
I love the rat.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 2:01 PM
best sounding member of the band last night was "stretch," standing in the back corner in the dark playing the same beat on the tambourine for every song.

I just got two tickets to the sold out show.. ticketmaster just released some.

awkward=funny=good
I think this appearance was conceived to produce a music video, in effect.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 3:05 PM
the rat is an amazing son...and leave chad curtis' grandmother out of this.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 3:09 PM
They should change their name to The iPod and get with the times!
Posted by Dorkfus | August 19, 2008 3:43 PM
or they could just stop making music.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 3:58 PM
that interview was awkward because the questions were a bit ridiculous. who cares if they are arrogant...
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 4:19 PM
also i'd like to add that they played my college last year and i had friends working the show and they said the walkmen were extremely nice. also a few years ago after hurricane katrina they came back to dc and played at the high school they went to for a katrina benefit. cut them some slack people. things aren't always as they appear.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 4:21 PM
i thought the video was funny, but i actually completely believe hamilton's answer. paul, walter, and matt were part of an amazing DC band called The Ignobles that played their last show in the summer of '93. peter and hamilton, a couple of years younger, were no doubt fans and if i recall correctly covered The Ignobles in their own band, Opus 88. almost all of them went to st. albans and were probably pals since the 7th grade or earlier.
i think they absolutely do get their inspirations from each other and their long-term friendships. and as to what their sound is really about and where they're going with it is up to them. that's what they've all been about since back in the day. i knew it back then and i know it now, these guys have always been amazing and i'm just glad i can be there to dance along for the ride.
Posted by n.tronix | August 19, 2008 4:46 PM
this really has nothing to do with chad curtis. and chad totally sonned jim grey, your telling of the story is way off. here was this nobody 4th outfielder who hit a walk off and still had the poise to tell jim to his face that he was a douche to pete rose. you fill me with hate, but the love i have for the yankees, the walkmen, and the grandmas of the world will get me through this.

"She was just trying to be nice. She isn't a hipster though, and probably doesn't listen to The Walkmen. Why was he a dick to her though? The girl was just doing her job."
Because the guy is an arrogant dick.....we live in the same neighborhood so I see him around every once in a while..privileged Columbia dickwads.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 5:21 PM
How was he a dick to her? You all are awfully sensitive!
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 5:29 PM
He didn't go to Columbia.
Posted by Anonymous | August 19, 2008 5:30 PM
that interview seemed perfectly fine to me, specially considering some of the questions were kinda silly. but whatevs.
jody's great
the walkmen's new album is great
the 1999 yankees werr great
you all needs to chill out.

I don't think anyone in the Walkmen went to college, let alone an Ivy League school.
Posted by Regular reader | August 20, 2008 9:24 AM
The Paul Shaffer thing was golden.

"I don't think anyone in the Walkmen went to college, let alone an Ivy League school."
this is ridiculous.
matt, paul and walt went to Columbia.
hamilton and pete went to college too, just not Columbia.
+100 points for the "each other? our friendship?" reply.
Posted by bloppity blop | August 20, 2008 9:36 AM
They are college dropouts. I stand corrected.
Posted by Regular reader | August 20, 2008 11:13 AM
The show last night was outstanding. I've seen them many times over years and they have never sounded better. The new songs are great and his voice is flat out impressive.
Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2008 1:33 PM
Great show last night. Could somebody post the setlist? I've already forgotten.
Posted by Anonymous | August 20, 2008 2:44 PM
Set list is two thirds of the new album, a third of the first album, and a couple tracks from the second and third albums.
Posted by Regular reader | August 20, 2008 3:32 PM
it was awkward but you all need to chill out
it wasnt that bad he wasnt being arrogant it was jut him being him it wasnt a contrived aloofness at all.
Posted by Anonymous | August 21, 2008 3:12 PM
did any of them actually graduate columbia?
