Toadies - Lollapalooza pics & 2008 Tour Dates
photos by Zach Dilgard

Reunion tours are capable of taking the public by surprise: "That band is getting back together?"Toadies recently sold out and played Bowery Ballroom before I even realized they were a band again (they played on a NYC rooftop that same night). I actually wasn't personally looking for them to be a band again, but more and more people I talk to are excited about it and Zach managed to catch them at Lollapalooza. Time Out Chicago was there too. They wrote...But in certain cases, the band members themselves can be caught unaware. That's more or less what happened with the Toadies, an act not much heard from since it splintered a half dozen years ago, and one that's been out of the brightest of spotlights since the song "Possum Kingdom" was a major alternative-rock hit in the mid-'90s.
The notion of a reunion dawned on Vaden Todd Lewis when he was writing songs in his Fort Worth, Texas, home last year -- after his most recent band, Burden Brothers, fell apart. [STLToday]
I vaguely recall the Toadies from the heyday of alternative, when bands that sounded like Puddle of Mudd covering ZZ Top could slide a song on radio playlists. I'm not sure what's most shocking--that I recognize "Backslider," the grey-haired age of the players (were the '90s that long ago?), or the horde of Toad-heads (I think/hope I just made that up) gong nuts to hear this.Tickets are now on sale for upcoming shows at Webster Hall and Starland Ballroom. Fuck Time Out Chicago, how dare they compare Todies to Puddle of Mudddddd.
Rubberneck was a sweet album, so many good songs.

I didn't like this band 13 years ago and I don't like them now.
Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 1:13 PM
well that's funny, cause you're their biggest seller!

I'm cool, I post about how much I dislike a band from the 90's. I also have the tightest jeans around and my parents give me money to buy clothes at Urban Outfitters.
For fucks sake.
Anybody see this show? Was it decent?

the bowery show was worth every penny. never seen the place go so nuts. it was a riot. fuck the haters.

Right on Anon 1:35 I'm sick of these hipster d-bags with their stupid negative comments and super tight jeans.
Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 2:08 PM
Didn't they used to have a chick bassist?
Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 2:20 PM
man, they are such a fantastic band. i am so glad they're still making music. sometimes it's really good to hear some kick ass rock solos, and much like fellow 90's rockers superdrag, these guys deliver.
Posted by holmes | August 6, 2008 2:28 PM
how did i not know about the bowery show? damn.
and yes, lisa umbarger used to play bass with the band, but left soon after their second record came out (and right before the band broke up completely, until now, i guess).

The Bowery show was one of my favorite shows of the year so far. Hearing Tyler live put a smile on my face that lasted for a week. Hearing them off in the distance while waiting near the rail for Rage this past weekend was torture. My friend and I had our fingers crossed for another NYC show in the fall around the time of their album release to make up for missing them. It was nice finding out on Monday that we guessed right.

Of all the bands for people on BV to fawn over/dork out, the TOADIES!?!?
Jesus, I'd hate to see the dick sucking associated with a Candle Box or Veruca Salt reunion show.

We saw them at Lolla -- not only were the fucking amazing, but their songs sound fresher than most of the other acts we caught last weekend. The stage was packed and people were singing along to every word. The singer guy sounds a lot better than he looks -- kind of an uglier Anderson Cooper or older Peter North -- but we were shocked by how great their songs sounded. I saw them open for Smashing Pumpkins (I think) 'back in the 90s' and they had a lil squat chick bass player and played a cover of Gary Numan 'Cars'.

Who's Peter North?
Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 5:00 PM
Yeah the Toadies were a great band with tight songs. They only had that one big hit but a lot of other great songs. They deserve the attention. It's not like everyone is going ape shit for Seven Mary Three.

I'd go see a re-united Veruca Salt.
Throw in Elastica and Luscious Jackson and, brother, you got a hot ticket.
Posted by Anonymous | August 6, 2008 6:04 PM
Peter North is/was a porn star who was famous for his God-given talent of autofelacio.

oh, man!!!
5:58, i forgot about 7 mary three!!
jesus, they blew! too bad, cuz the name, a CHiPs reference, was cool.

Yo seven mary three SUCKED. And they were from my hometown of Orlando FL go figure. Not that I suck I'm just saying orlando sucks. Anyone remeber HUM they ripped it up. They didn't really get the attention they deserved cause they were nerds.
