Underworld - an APW review, Baltimore pics & both setlists

photos by Bao Nguyen, words by Showtrotta

underworld

The only bands I (Showtrotta) wanted to see at All Points West in Jersey City on Friday (8/8) were Underworld and Radiohead. I entered the festival a bit earlier than that though - just in time to get poured on, but luckily it let up pretty quickly. I had some time to grab something to eat, drink one of my five beers in the designated drinking area (seriously Jersey...wtf?), and stake out a good spot for Underworld. I wound up around 15 feet back from the stage after stepping over and around throngs of people who had already claimed their spots with blankets. When Underworld came on it became apparent that 90% of the people were just there for Radiohead. It was frustrating, but I wasn't about to let it ruin anything. There was a little group of people nearby who were also there to see Underworld and we all happily got down for the hour and 15 minutes Underworld were on.

I was upset when I later read criticisms of Underworld's set as "cheesy and dated". Underworld played such an important role shaping electronic music and I really enjoyed their set. The older tracks they played at the festival are classics which paved the way for a lot of the electronic music that became popular thereafter. Underworld's music is, and their stage presence was, strong. I was able to experience a sense of nostalgia for a time that I wasn't around for firsthand.

Unfortunately the daytime APW set meant there was no great Underworld light show...and the huge light balloons just weren't the same without actual lights in them. Luckily the visuals were still good - a mix of old school video games and a live video feed from cameras on the stage which often pointed at Karl Hyde who barely stopped bouncing for a second through the entire length of the show.

The night ended perfectly hours later at the end of Radiohead's set with their dedication of "Everything In Its Right Place" to Underworld, which as a fan of both bands I found to be a beautiful moment in its own right. However, I also appreciated it even more after dancing amidst a crowd of motionless, disinterested Radiohead fans during Underworld's set.

The next day in Baltimore Underworld got a two hour set in the dance tent where they were competing a little with the noise coming from the Foo Fighters on the main stage. There were no huge Underworld light balloons at all - possibly due to the ceiling height, but it was nighttime. Both festival setlists, and more pics from Baltimore, below...

I thought Underworld were phenomenal Friday night at APW. My friends and I got a great spot a third of the way between the soundboard and the stage for Underworld + Radiohead and danced our asses off. Loved the extra-house-y bass beat in Everything in Its Right Place dedicated to UW.

i agree. i went to the festival for Radiohead,But Underworlds set really was phenomenal. Just a great performance. Really really fun. And also a total encapsulation of everything good about Electronic noise.

i love underworld

I was there for the perfect trilogy of grizzly bear to underworld to radiohead

all three sets were excellent
caught some lameness from duffy and CSS by accident

as to be expected at a festival

underworld saved the unbearable field day festival back in 2003, and were the first performance to get people actually MOVING.

anyone who thinks they are dated doesn't know shit.

Using a 5 year old show to prove something isn't dated?

I won't debate their merit or place in history. But the daylight took away their smoke and mirrors and, on that particular night, they were rubbish.

I saw underworld 2 weeks ago in Korea and they were headlining for that festival.

I had the best time of MY LIFE.
the conditions were just perfect: nighttime, great crowd, and great visuals.

I started crying when born.slippy came on.

I chose to go Friday instead of Saturday because of Underworld. Underworld was the perfect opening band for Radiohead, I would love to see it that way every time.

I did not attend, but the way this reviewer writes, it sounds like he would have liked Underworld no matter what and did not even need to see the show to validate his opinion. Not a comment on the show...just the non-objective review (if that's even possible).

someone needs to photoshop that first green photo into a scene from the Punch Out! arcade game.

my first exposure to underworld, and i thought they were terrible, monotonous crap. and i am not alone in that opinion, among many open-minded people in my vicinity, we were all grateful when the set was over. to each his own, maybe if we were into that stuff 10, 15 years ago it would have been more enjoyable.

In response to CN's comment:

I did not intend for the review to come off as non-objective. If it comes off as skewed in favor of Underworld it's because I did not find anything wrong with their actual performance - I just found the daytime setting to be less than ideal. If you read some other reviews I've written on this site and my own, you will see instances in which I have no qualms giving deejays and acts that I love bad reviews if I feel their performances warrant them. I did not feel this was the case with Underworld which is why the review is so positive. Thanks for the feedback.

the light baloons were at Baltimore - you shouldn't leave sets early - you miss out.

Don't worry anon 10:15 - I'm sure Britney Spears will do another album soon enough - so you can get back to what you were into 10-15 years ago.

Dumb ass prick face.

ANON 10:15 is a Radiohead fanboy, obvioulsy not really into music - just likes saying he likes certian people that are the flavor of the month - RH included.

i've read some really positive reviews of the underworld show, like this one. you're not alone.

but was it worth missing girl talk?

Posted by Anonymous | August 16, 2008 2:00 AM

OK, first let me say that I was one of those people that came basically to see Radiohead, and was totally unfamiliar with Underworld! Moreover, I'm not a big fan of techno. Now I understand everyone is entitled to their taste, but I simply cannot imagine how ANYONE with any musical taste (i.e. Radiohead fan) could not have LOVED Underworld. They truly put on a phenomenal show in every respect - in some ways better than Radiohead (whose song selection I thought was lacking). This band totally transcends their genre and I instantly became a fan. As for Girls' Talk - I heard they were good, but I have to say, based on a couple segments I saw on youtube . . . NO comparison. Underworld creates music that just makes you want to get up and dance. AWESOME show - hope to see them again!! Aside from Sonic Youth (and I guess Radiohead) best concert I've seen in a few years!!

Posted by JasonNYC | August 16, 2008 3:19 AM

i can't figure out how anyone with musical taste (i.e. radiohead fan) could find anything to like about underworld.
10-15 years ago i was listening to radiohead, sonic youth, nirvana, etc, you donkey felching shit dick.

Posted by Anonymous | August 18, 2008 9:36 AM

Man i had never heard of underworld until this show, i had just been up for Radiohead. I have to say that they put on one hell of a phenomenal show and i would gladly go to see them again. Hurray for broadening my musical horizons.

I'd have to say that after waiting ten years (got into underworld at age 12 in 1997) and finally seeing them live at central park in Sept '07(PHENOMENAL SHOW)--the APW show was lacking (and this AFTER taking some "supplements") but I mostly attributed this to the shortened stage time and the daylight. The only track that really sounded dated to me was "Moaner" and again, I may have had a completely different opinion had it been night and had ppl around me been more "into it". I felt foolish dancing b/c ppl around me were giving me and my friend strange looks. And I LOVE Radiohead, I was there for them and Underworld, but nobody fucking moved during RH's set either, they just stood there with their fucking cell phones to take grainy, shitty videos of the show to jerk off to later with their hipster friends instead of actually bothering to EXPERIENCE the goodness that is Radiohead.
