The Hold Steady @ McCarren Pool (more by Kyle Reinford)
The Hold Steady

"While the UK pop scene suffers from a surfeit of homogenous guitar rock, American music is enjoying a golden moment. Literary bands, with songs that revel in intricate language, complex narratives and cinematic plot twists, are on the rise. So if you are looking for an alternative to identikit indie, the wait is over..."
[says The Observer]
The Observer goes on to name The Hold Steady, Vampire Weekend, Silver Jews, The Mountain Goats and Fleet Foxes as fine examples of American lyrics. Tickets are now on sale for the next Fleet Foxes show in NYC.

Fleet Foxes last show in NYC was on the TV.

Tickets are also on sale for a couple of Mountain Goats shows.

Vampire Weekend's lyrics? It might be the fact that English is not my native language but I tried to understand their lyrics once and it found nothing close to intricate language nor complex narratives. However, Mountain Goats...

I love the lyrics on the Vampire Weekend album.

I read this article last sunday, I have been saying that for quite a long time UK music scene can't compare with USA at present.
This "new-folk" vein adapts much better to USA northern states than to Birmingham.

agree with Eduard that Vampire Weekend are the weakest of the 5.

Fleet Foxes definitely my favourites, check them live on liveon35mm.com

Lyrics are overrated. There should be lots more instrumental songs than there are.

Music is overrated.

Hercules and love affair > vampire weekend
Shearwater > hold steady

....though i like them all

replace vampire weekend with Hercules and Love Affair. and hold steady with shearwater.

If the Hold Steady is being placed on a pedestal, music is dead. Good lord, who listens to music for good lyrics and gets excited about good lyrics. Get that mediocre bar band out of the PR loop.

I hope everyone knows how well connected Craig Finn is to the whole PR world. Get rid of that and they'd get a fraction of the press they get now.

I appreciate good lyrics and can assure you that French rapper Abd al Malik has the best lyrics going these days. American rappers? Not so much anymore. Does anybody have any idea what Lil Wayne, the supposed great lyricist, is even talking about?

Posted by Sharkdog | August 6, 2008 2:45 PM

^^^^Seems like he's talking about syrup, a cocktail of sprite, promethazine and codeine.

>Does anybody have any idea what Lil Wayne, the supposed great lyricist, is even talking about?

Codeine, crawfish, coincidences and making cartloads of money. But that's neither here nor there.

yep, if the hold steady were a beer, they'd be like coors lite or some fucking watery terrible gassy shit like that.

"lil john, he always tells the truth."
