Blank Dogs

"Who are the Blank Dogs? Frankly, I'm not sure. My understanding is that it's one guy's bedroom project, a lo-fi dungeon-style operation that churns out releases every couple of days. But furthermore, what is a Blank Dog? Is the "Blank" meant to censor an expletive, like "When are those (blank) dogs going to stop humping my leg?" or "I can't believe the Bumpuses' (blank) dogs ate the Christmas turkey." Actually, this latest Blank Dogs LP, originally a cassette release, is a lot like a humping dog: A little disconcerting at first, but tough to peel away from once it gets going.

For all the musicians crafting grimy, lo-fi electro-rock, the man behind Blank Dogs takes it to another level, because it feels like he means it." [The Wire]

With something like 10 great releases this year and last (mostly a mix of 7"'s, cassettes, EP's and albums) (many of them available for free download, go get em while you can), Brooklyn's mysterious Blank Dogs have yet to play a live show. That will change after this weekend. Exact dates and videos below...

Looks more like douchenuts likes wearing his clothes around his neck with a SARS mask

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:34 PM

A band who nobody has ever heard of is playing their first show. Wow.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:41 PM

easy there - plenty of people have heard of them.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:45 PM

That guy looks like a fucking asshole.

Posted by SeeYouInTea | September 19, 2008 12:53 PM

Have you guys heard the Myspace songs? Not wretched, but not deserving all this hype by a longshot.

Curious what people here think of the actual material.

Posted by Nestor, a Poet and HotDog | September 19, 2008 1:03 PM

this band has put out tons of albums, the music is good, the "what is my identity schtick" is dumb, but seriously people have heard of this band.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:32 PM

WOW, that is hard to listen too. I love lo-fi. I don't like Blank Dogs. Sounds like a lot of goth kids first attempts with garageband. It must feel pretty sleezy hyping this stuff. Obviously BD's got a friend who is a photographer and really wants attention without having to actually do anything original. "Oh, yeah, I'm blanx Dawgz, I'm like the residents, but with a trendy cobbled together homemade look. I'll raps my head in underooz like lighting bolt. I'll pretend I was in fortz thunderz in 1999, but I waznt."

Work on your mixed BD's. "leak a decent ep" the blogs will love you… until they hate you. It's a 16 week cycle these days.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:38 PM

1:38 -- I hear you. I liked the dense muddy textures at first but the melodies weren't there to support it, and there wasn't any breathing room.

Posted by Nestor, a Tean Ager Shit | September 19, 2008 1:44 PM

Attention haters, I know a band you will like. They're called Airborne Toxic Event. I heard they are playing Ace Bar.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:01 PM

uh lots of people like Blank Dogs. he has a plethora of releases, some are lukewarm but there are lots of gems in there. kudos to BV for recognizing something good and FUCK clueless haters.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:23 PM

He's that one guy from Academy Records in Williamsburg

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:46 PM

u been sniped

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:59 PM

he used to be the bassist in DC Snipers. remember them?

blank dogs are the shit

you dudes are out of the loop

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:51 PM

nice how Dogs is all lo-fi until he needs a headshot. Then he's all lighting and lenses. FAUX-KNEE.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:59 PM

crystal dummies

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:02 PM

hate hate hate hate

1. That's not the guy from Blank Dogs in the photo.
I'm the photographer, Lyndsey Welgos.

2. I never met the guy from Blank Dogs, and the shot was for a UK art/music paper.

3. The photo was used without permission by Brooklyn Vegan.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:11 PM

listen asswipes, blank dogs are actually pretty good.

make fun of shit that actually completely blows before you start attacking stuff that isn't half bad. plus, yes, maybe you aren't so super awesome as you like to think. maybe you haven't heard of a band before. it happens to the best of us, bucko. omg! we all know how well versed you are on all forms of music, but please, just shut up before you reveal even how much more clueless you really are.

*& end scene*

Posted by cranky | September 19, 2008 4:25 PM

"I'm the photographer, Lyndsey Welgos."

You don't even know how to spell your own name Lyndsy?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:31 PM

It's actually a really nice photo. Good work. BV, you should give credit to borrowed work. Artists shouldn't have to find their own work on blogs, most will gladly allow you to use their work in exchange for a link.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 5:46 PM

just for the record, the photo is credited and posted with permission by Lyndsy. Lyndsy did not comment here. Lyndsy is not spelled "Lyndsey".

Posted by brooklynvegan | September 19, 2008 5:57 PM

I know why Blank Dogs are so press abhorrent, but it's really a lost cause. at some point they are going to blow up a little and at that moment (which is probably right now), all that mystery is going to have to lift a little.

you can't stop it man, if people start writing about you it's just going to happen the way it will, whether you like it or not.

eventually, people who you don't agree with about musical tastes are going to like your band.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 6:06 PM

Funny about the spelling mistake. Someone just told me about this.

Anyway.

Ads above the article, ads beside it.

Yet the music/photos/videos are posted for free without permission.

Ms. Welgos was credited after the fact when someone sent an email on my behalf.

People are free to hate the music, it's not being made with everyone's taste in mind. I'm sure I hate a lot of what you're into as well. I actually think a lot of the comments are funny.

One thing: I actually lived in Providence in '97-99, and I was at a lot of shows at Fort Thunder. Lightning Bolt were pretty good, but I wouldn't consider them any kind of influence.

The main point of this post is Brooklyn Vegan should at least contact an artist before posting music/videos/whatever. They clearly sell adspace, and typically I wouldn't give permission for a place to post that stuff if they do (sometimes in the past, they have without my permission..)

The music up to the LP on Troubleman is free to download, if you even want to bother (most people here seem to be not-so-hot on it).

I don't have anything to do with the photos/videos. They're not mine to allow to publish.

Still waiting for an email from Brooklyn Vegan.

I appreciate the kind words, but you really need to start asking before posting people's property.

-Blank Dogs

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 6:14 PM

"I don't have anything to do with the photos/videos. They're not mine to allow to publish."

If you don't want your videos published, take them off YouTube. You sound pretty clueless.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 6:46 PM

OHHH NO!

That hurt!

wah wah wah

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 6:55 PM

"Funny about the spelling mistake. Someone just told me about this."

stop laughing at and talking to yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 7:06 PM

blank dogs are killer
you lame-ass nutlickers that are talking shit are likely just salt-diggity cuz his tunes are way more original, creative, innovative, and actually enjoyable to listen to than anything you're doing.
even with your Pro Tools HD setup.

haterz:

When they come out it's a sure sign you're on the right track.

Posted by bdubb | September 19, 2008 8:43 PM

I swear to god some of you people are complete dunces... Clearly a reflection of the quality of this place. Find something to live for. Why don't you go to shows and heckle all the bands you crap on? It's because you're powerless without anonymity and most likely have underdeveloped taste. Are you people for real? I bet its the same 5 morons that bullshit on here all day. I can't believe I'm lowered to posting too but jesus its really lame.

Also, what the fuck is this blog/site about? They're complete bottom feeders. 1 out of 10 articles are remotely interesting to the average schmo. The photography is as terrible as the lazy, cut and past writing... plus they just post shit without telling bands for them to hear from there friends that a bunch of schmucks are talking shit about them again on that dumb site. Disable comments - wait no if it weren't for the comments no one would even give 2 hot shits about this wackass site. Which is no doubt why most of you are here bullshitting.

I expect this will just feed some trigger happy bedroom blog stirring samurais to try and make some half witty contrarian remark. Please do. I won't read it.

Posted by $ | September 19, 2008 11:24 PM

I bet you were typing hard enough to break your MacBook Air, chief.

And I know you read that you smug fuck.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:48 PM

If that is the Blank Dogs posting earlier, then they are nuts. How in the heck would NYC scenesters hear about this band without a blog like BV?

BTW, I really like the Blank Dogs.

Posted by pants | September 20, 2008 12:13 AM

well , quite a few people have heard about them without this blog.thats why he keeps making records and geting them put out.

Posted by a. | September 20, 2008 12:21 AM

So if people on Brooklyn Vegan don't like Blank Dogs, Vivian Girls, Crystal Stilts.... than who do they like?

Please fill us in..

Who are the good bands?

Fucking losers.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 2:04 AM

if that actually was Blank Dogs posting earlier, to you, I say:

Get over yourself. Most musicians would be honored to be featured here. Just because you create this air of mystery doesn't mean you're too good for blogs.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 2:28 AM

Blank Dogs = my snizz!!!! Go listen to real music!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 3:37 AM

Rich kid with friends in high places puts out shitty joy Division 4-track demos and eats dick.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 11:27 AM

rich kid eh? I know the guy. he works long days at retail wages. he is not rich, and you shouldn't speak when you don't know what you're talking about

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 1:22 PM

go listen to the hold steady you fucking losers

Posted by a | September 20, 2008 7:24 PM

'$' (aka 11:24pm) sure gets worked up over a bunch of 'bottom feeders.' the funniest part is $ doesn't quite ever get around to explaining why gives such a shit.

no wait that's wrong: The *funniest* part is where he thinks that by assuring people that he will not deign to read any responses, that renders any other summation moot.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 4:16 AM

"air of anonymity"
??

why? because dude doesn't have a bunch of gay promo shots of him up on his myspace page? Maybe he is more into making good music than trying to whore himself out.

the music speaks for itself.

Posted by erreur | September 21, 2008 10:20 AM

The Blank Dogs guy didn't respond to any of this. I know him, someone thought it'd be funny to respond as him. They also have a Blank Dogs email address. Apparently, there's a bunch of Blank Dogs email addresses.

He said he saw the post and thought it was funny.

They played last night, and it wasn't so good. I think there was technical issues or something, but they seemed pissed and upset.

No masks or anonymity. Definatly not rich.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 10:38 AM

I think Blank Dogs did respond to this post. Look at their myspace page, where they address it on their blog basically stating blogs not to cover them. Seems kinda weird.

Posted by pants | September 21, 2008 2:14 PM

hay guys - Blank dogz here. just want 2 say thnx 4 all the coverage BV and all the posi comments!! sorry bout the horrible set last nite.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 2:23 PM

Hey Brooklyn Vegan, turn off anonymous commenting.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 5:13 PM

Hey 5:13, go fuck yourself

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 5:40 PM

hey - it's mike from blank dogs again.

I just wanted to say I just don't really want my art to be heard in any other way that i intend - (which is on MY blog - http://blankdogs.blogspot.com/)....so if you see any blog coverage or media people talking about me - please make sure to e-mail me and let me know. I've got lawyers and shit all ready to go out and sue these pieces of shit for writing about me. It's fucking libel!

I can't stand the media and being heard by people who don't deserve. I don't make music in my bedroom so that your average brooklynvegan reader can hear it. Fuck that. I am the gatekeeper to my art - and only me.

Know that.

Mike
Blank Dogs

Posted by Mike - you know, the guy from tehe band | September 21, 2008 6:07 PM

6:07, swell job but you forgot the part where you're not stoked at finding out that you're providing 'content' for a business (it's not?) without permission. it doesn't seem to be mainly a quality control or remuneration issue at all. just a shitty sitch that people have internalized as being natural

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2008 2:10 AM

show was great. LOUD

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2008 2:24 PM

you can't teach a blank dogs new tricks.

Actually, BV commentors do suck. I agree. Anonymous posting ruins all blog discourse. BV, lock it down. You aren't cultivating a community. You are just giving tolls a spot to spray their stink. You will get plenty of legit registered comments if you lock it down and you know it. Forget this secret ballot shit.

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2008 5:54 PM

What would keep a troll from registering a new account with a different e-mail address whenever his BV commenting account is banned? Yeah, it's a bit of a pain to do that, so it would cut down on the number of offensive comments, but they wouldn't be eliminated. And it wouldn't prevent people from impersonating members of bands.

Posted by Anonymous | September 22, 2008 6:05 PM

just post an IP address stamp, that would basically take care of it.

I know I'd personally post less stupid shit if my IP address made it easy to see what all dumbass drunk / stoned comments I've thrown up on here!

Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2008 1:35 PM

hahaha i am the gatekeeper of my art , genius

Posted by Anonymous | September 29, 2008 2:02 AM

So, here's the thing...

The reason they/he are/is called 'Blank Dogs' is because of the numerous 'dogs' that remain 'blank'. Mike, the one whose anonymity has been broken most (willingly, albeit), is the original 'Blank Dog', but friends of his, and fellow artists get together and release stuff of a similar style (though not identical, if you actually give it a listen), each recording their own solo-album, then releasing it under the name of 'Blank Dogs', like an auteur of sorts, 'Blank Dogs'. You wonder why so much is released so frequently? There you go. Why a limited amount of record x or cassette y? Because the less that get distributed, the less apparent it is that x doesn't match y, though for those who collect x and y, along with a few other vowels and consonants, the style is so different, it sounds like the man behind Blank Dogs is just a musical genius (or at the very least, a musician with poor skill but much versatility). Hence the mask. Anonymity. This should not be something to turn you off, one of the 'Dogs' is actually a girl from Queens - a 'Blank Bitch', if you will - and to be frank, I admire these Blank Dogs even more for their smarts and ideas and such.
Bravo

BLANK DOGS ON LOCK BITCHESSSSSSS

The dudes in MY band and I collect his stuff...
as far as quirky lofi postpunk goes, we can't find anyone else who is any good at doing it lately.

If "Mike" is Zuul, we be Vinz Clortho.

Has anyone ever sucked a good cock for breakfast? I'm told that at the dawn of time, at the foot hold of Arnold, the crest of man, where wenches and witches dabbled in unspeakable deeds, man was held down and forced to concur.

Do yourself a favor and get out there and get your feet dirty. Suck the wong that sings of pleasure and hold the head high that sings sweet surrender. You'll feel better about yourself and the way you take it.

For Christ's sake, puncture the wound! Howl like a beast! Get to it.
