Polaris

BV Mike was hoping for Plants & Animals, though he agrees
that Caribou equally deserves it. To quote him:

The former Manitoba a.k.a Daniel Snaith makes the shortlist with his beautiful album Andorra. So much can be said about this album. An amalgam of dream pop, shoegazer, experimental electronica, and even late 60s mod leanings, it never ceases to be surprising and engrossing. I strongly think I am going to regret placing this record third in my predictions but I feel that his strong track record actually hurts his chances somewhat. I just have this feeling that this record is going to be overlooked by the judges.
Not overlooked after all. Who would you have voted for?

I love the Weakerthans' album, but agree the Caribou album deserved the prize! Andorra was one of my top 2 or 3 favorite albums from last year.

Dan and his band were so kick-ass at Bowery last spring. Not only is Andorra awesome, he puts on an awesome live show. Double drumming = awesome.

Congrats!

I would have voted Plants and Animals, or maybe Holy Fuck, but honestly, Caribou is also a good choice.

You do realize that all these bands are horrible.

^Yeah? You listened to every one of those albums and they all sucked? Shut the fuck up.

I voted for Kodos!

Is Dan still working on his PH.D? He might be the smartest man in indie rock.

very, very glad this choice was made. saw him at the Empty Bottle in Chicago last fall and it was one of the best gigs of the last couple years. agreed with the above poster who loved the double drumming. kudos to Caribou! i am very excited for their next LP (which is apparently being recorded now).

I'll go along with that, though, I wouldn't have protested had P & A won.

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2008 8:59 AM

yeah, also agree that Plants and Animals is actually the best but Caribou is a good winner.

Dan Snaith is a musical genius. Very much deserved!

weird that black mountain is getting completely overlooked. i felt that album was really strong, definitely should have rounded out the top three with pa and caribou

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2008 5:51 PM

black mountain completely overlooked? you do realize they were shortlisted for the prize?

Posted by Anonymous | September 30, 2008 10:39 PM

this was a crappy shortlist... a handful of truly mediocore(at best) albums among the 10 finalists while quility bands simply got ignored!!!

'Wintersleep' deserved to win the 08 polaris...PERIOD
