Wow, I've always known they would sell out. But, they've seriously become the biggest bunch of cheeseballs!

Geez, a big Web company like Yahoo is accepting entries for a contest via e-mail rather than a Web form? WTF

Here's hoping that the dude from Toronto shows up.

Anon 1:13pm: i'm sure if you were given the option to take the checks a band like Coldplay gets offered to do events like this you would "sell out"
seriously...BV comments has turned into nothing more than a chance for ya'll indiefags to hate hate, and hate.

I don't hate, but Coldplay is in the unfortunate position of being one of the last bands stuck in the archaic web of corporate industry.
The real problem is that they just aren't very good in that role musically or otherwise.

Greg: who is "very good" that would translate to events like this? mass consumption man, no one who watches a show like "Nissan Presents" can give a rats ass about bands who play CakeShop or Market Hotel...think about it...

Is this domain even registered to yahoo?

2:32pm, not sure I follow you. I'm not making the case that there aren't great bands at the corporate level -- I'm simply saying this band has somehow 'managed up' to the point where EMI/whomever thinks they can hang their hats on them in a very outdated way. They just aren't good enough to carry that burden -- even their own fans aren't sticking around (witness the 'free' MSG show reaction). As far as the 'Nissan Presents' issue: every event or venue has it's corporate logos and sponsorships all over the place, directly stated or not, so that's pretty much a mute point at every level (as I recall the camel logos all over at the Spoon show at Terminal 5).

I see the jealous indie music hipsters are foaming at the mouth again.
Coldplay is playing ANOTHER free show in NYC, another indication of how fan friendly they are.
Once again, hipsters are hating. Listen people, even the righteous indie bands that you all worship would do the same thing if they had the stature to do so. In fact, any band that signs a record deal (even with indie labels) does so in the HOPES of becoming as big as U2 and Coldplay and Oasis and, believe it or not, do not hope they play the Cakeshop, Pianos or a local bar the rest of their lives.
Once again, the market in music is efficient. The best bands are the biggest (U2, Coldplay, and Oasis).

Yawn......

Greg: what i'm saying is, corporate rock has nothing to do with cred, it all has to to with how many people will pay attention to the band/brand. Coldplay, wether "you" like them, will get lots of people and PRESS to follow. Chris Martin is a mega-star, and Nissan is buying that cashe. Spoon got that Camel tour because the people who buy their records are the demo that Camel wants to buy their cigarettes...i can't bet my life that noone at Camel-corporate can give a rats ass if GaGaGaGaGa is a good record, they want 21-40 year old white people to buy their products.

^^ Gotchya. I think we agree -- in so far as now I want a Camel to smoke while I listen to 'Don't Meet Me at Target', er, 'Don't Make me A Target'... I probably won't buy a Nissan nor listen to Coldplay, though.

Coldplay deserves this kind of fame and recognition. Dare I say that they should be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

remember when rolling stone referred to chris martin as a rock god?
that was funny...

1 - coldplay don't get paid. this is a series that yahoo does and nissan is the sponsor. coldplay didn't choose them or say yes or no because it was nissan. this is purely marketing.
2 - other great artists such as brian wilson, weezer, foo fighters have done this same exact thing.
get the facts first idiots.
Posted by Anonymous | September 23, 2008 10:21 AM
Coldplay, Weezer and Foo Fighters are not great artists!
