how was the Vincent Gallo show @ Hiro Ballroom?

Vincent Gallo & Snoop Dogg
Vincent Gallo and Snoop Dogg

Peter writes in:

You should mention something about the Vincent Gallo show at Hiro Ballroom last night.
25 dollars: the worst show I have EVER seen in my life.
Him and two out-of-work male models hunched over (Gallo's) expensive vintage equipment and noodled for an hour. I seriously do not think anyone in the band actually knows how to play an instrument. Gallo had his back towards the audience the whole time and ended the show with a mumbled 'thanks' and they took off backstage. I thought it was a pathetic attempt at an encore, and then the house lights came up.
Has anyone seen a RRIICCEE show they liked?

has vincent gallo ever done anything worth while?

Yes.

It's been said that the lottery is a tax on people that are bad at math. Think of your $25 as the penalty you pay for thinking "I want to hear music made by Vincent Gallo."

"Buffalo '66" is one of my all-time favorite movies, and "The Brown Bunny" was pretty solid too.

I saw him play with Sean Lennon a few years ago at Rothko and it was a great show. Played a bunch of stuff from his "solo" album and from "Buffalo '66". He seemed genuinely sweet and personable.

Posted by wembley | September 25, 2008 10:13 AM

There's a sucker born every minute...

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:13 AM

saw him with sean lennon a few years back, which was ok. they played most of 'when,' but i think it's more of a headphones album. the show was boring. i don't think i'd see him again. unless it was free and i was really bored.

plus, he's a total douchebag. but i think that's fairly obvious.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:14 AM

There is one part of Brown Bunny that I really like but other than that I don't know about this guy...

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:15 AM

The show last year was so painfully boring I couldn't believe A) There were so many people B) Not more people left. I walked out after 3 "songs" and got dirty looks from their manager/"crew" who was hanging out in the lobby. I still can't figure out why they are a band.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:16 AM

yea, definitely headphone music. the 2 male models had terrific legs.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:18 AM

I love his albums.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:22 AM

vincent gallo is a cool guy. he loves to admire his penis in his movies. seriously.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:30 AM

Why would anyone expect anything different to happen at that show ?

The band name & Gallo's rep alone should have tipped people off that they in for a self indulgent noodle fest

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 10:35 AM

You get what you deserve if you went to this show and support this jackass. No sympathy here. Next time why don't you just throw the money in your pocket literally down the drain.

And no wembley, The Brown Bunny was not a good movie. A piece of shit sold to hipster morons as art. Which is what most of Gallo's work is.

I'm surprised word hasn't spread quicker about how totally lame RRIICCEE. I saw them in Austin like 6 months ago (for free, thank god) and it was exactly as described here, except that in addition to 2 male models there was 1 female model with incredible legs. The venue was packed: I did the math and at $30/head they raked in well over $10,000. So maybe Gallo is a genius after all.

Posted by deepwaste | September 25, 2008 10:50 AM

commenter above doesn't know much about cinema.

wembley the idiot who calls The Brown Bunny pretty solid telling someone else they do not know much about cinema. Well isn't that a clear case of the pot calling the kettle pitch black.

"It's been said that the lottery is a tax on people that are bad at math. Think of your $25 as the penalty you pay for thinking "I want to hear music made by Vincent Gallo." "

Great comment... thank you.

I'm just saying... that if you have any kind of appreciation for cinema, that you wouldn't instantly dismiss "The Brown Bunny". I'm not saying it's a perfect movie, but it's a good watch. I haven't seen it since it was in the theatre, and that was definitely the way to watch it. Probably a little boring on video.

Most people just didn't give it a chance, and dismissed it as Gallo being self-indulgent, having no point... blah blah blah. I remember it being surprisingly emotional with some funny moments. The photography was gorgeous. I mean, I know there's probably way too many shots of windshield wipers, but it didn't bug me. I'll take a good, slow, meandering movie any day of the week.

The same people who write this one off probably think Antonioni was a hack.

Posted by wembley | September 25, 2008 11:05 AM

$25?
JOKE'S ON YOU!

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 11:05 AM

y'all do know that his penis in the brown bunny film was fake, right? it was the same one created for him for the film he did with claire denis 'trouble every day'. she called him out on it at a film festival and he skittered away, avoiding her. the guy is a fucking clown.

and yes, by comparison to her works... gallo's films are pre-graduate art film dreck. avant guardism for the bourgeois.

Posted by primeau | September 25, 2008 11:11 AM

Peter deserves to lose $25 for going to a Gallo "show".

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 11:20 AM

Buffalo '66 was is a film that really makes an impression on you. Brown Bunny was just ok, but the last part was amazing. He needs to concentrate on making new movies.

Posted by James | September 25, 2008 11:34 AM

dude's a brilliant actor, sounds like he comes up short in the music depo though

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 11:50 AM

BROWN BUNNY SUCKED (no pun intended). You arty farty fuckwit.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 11:50 AM

"He needs to concentrate on making new movies."

Gallo stars in the new Coppola film, "Tetro", which is now in post production.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 12:06 PM

What a bad way to span time.

Posted by Scott Norwood | September 25, 2008 12:39 PM

Gallo's got more talent in his pinky than Fat Bastard Coppola has had for the last 30 years.

Posted by wembley | September 25, 2008 12:53 PM

You paid for that?

Hahahahahahaha!

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 12:59 PM

he makes no wine before its time ar ar

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 1:14 PM

"Gallo's got more talent in his pinky than Fat Bastard Coppola has had for the last 30 years."

In the past thirty John Goodman could have beaten Jesse Owens in a race, that doesn't make him fast.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 1:26 PM

i've heard a few of his songs from his solo work and they are really good.

Posted by stephwo | September 25, 2008 1:28 PM

F@@@@ Gallo... Buffalo 66 was his self-appreciating peak in film. Brown Bunny was shit.. It was yet again... another 'I love what have between my legs' movie with a flimsy story that he really used vengefully against his ex, Chloe Sevigny. Chloe is also exceptionally more talented on screen than Gallo could ever dream of becoming as an actor. Too bad her climax in the film is the B.J.!Which makes it seem like shitty writing to me...
And about the above comments; Do you mean to tell me that you actually payed money to watch Gallo insult music? sounds like your own stupid mistake. Why not just eat some bad mexican and use the $25 on something worthwhile, like wiping your ASS with it. It will definitely do more for you that way! And we don't want him to get the impression that someone is waiting on him to further offend the art-world, so we probably should make an effort to not fund Gallo any longer

thanks for the laugh, scott norwood.

I can't believe someone paid $25 to say this self important dickbag and his posse. I can't believe people still respond to irony in a positive way. Im glad you got robbed of 25 bucks.

Posted by alofromdablock | September 25, 2008 1:59 PM

Vincent Gallo is an amazing talent. And he's Republican, which means he's not an idiot like the lot of you.

Posted by Tim | September 25, 2008 2:20 PM

Vincent Gallo has watched at least one Cassavetes movie.

"Vincent Gallo is an amazing talent. And he's Republican, which means he's not an idiot like the lot of you."

zOMG LOL

"Gallo's got more talent in his pinky than Fat Bastard Coppola has had for the last 30 years."

So, I guess you will pay $25 to see him...

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 4:10 PM

I wouldn't pay $25 to see RRIICCEE. That doesn't sound very interesting to me. I've never read a good write-up of any RRIICCEE show.

Posted by wembley | September 25, 2008 4:34 PM

anyone who paid to see this douchbag is an idiot. only good thing he did was buffalo 66. he just needs to go the fuck away forever.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 4:50 PM

Why would anyone name a band after such a shitty actor?

Posted by crazyeyekiller | September 25, 2008 4:54 PM

From the classified section of Gallo's website "I have been known worldwide to pay top dollar for collectable items which I had interest in to buy. The following is a list of items I am currently seeking. Let’s not turn this page into a waste of my time, OR I WILL NEVER DIRECT ANOTHER FILM"
People, you know what you have to do

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 6:04 PM

Still from Gallo's website (a true goldmine if you're bored at work) "By the way, did you ever notice the smell of redheads? I think that's why a lot of redhead girls have Black boyfriends. They smell compatible"
According to that pic and the above quote, looks like Gallo is smelling like a redhead.

Posted by Anonymous | September 25, 2008 6:08 PM

Gallo and Ted Nugent should go fuck in a remote cabin somewhere in the Dakotas while hollering their reactionary shock-shlock. Then they should get kidnapped by a pack of red-headed cannibals on PCP.

Posted by alex | September 26, 2008 10:27 AM

alex lary (posted above) is a self promoter who can't write and doesn't know anything about the show she saw. get you info right, alex, before you post it online. has anyone noticed how brooklyn vegan is made for people who just want to be angry about something? This Brooklyn vegan (i'm also a vegan from brooklyn) thinks that the probably self-proclaimed eco-conscious and tolerant people like most of the posters here should approach the world with less cynicism and more respect for an act that, even if you don't like it, is an unusual and gutsy undertaking. I feel like a rriiccee show is one you should go to with an open mind. nothing happened at the show that warranted an aggressive response. I was there, I agree there were moments of noodling, but it was truly not something I'm not used to and I have to say I appreciated that. Not to mention it was a pleasure to look at and stimulating to listen to.

Proof of Gallo's greatness can be understood by the mere mention of his name generating such low level, Jealous and bitter chatter here. Not one negative comment about Gallo here was thoughtful, insightful, educated or intelligent. Gallo represents the high level that low-level folks need to knock down to sedate their fear of anything they do not understand. Gallo is not the first genius to be bashed by the ignorant masses but certainly with the Internet a bunch of low-grade fools think their bashing is significant. It is not important what you idiots think but rather it is important that you remind us there are so many fools still out there. Gallo has been creating very interesting and successful work for 30 years. In the fields of music, film, art , photography and writing. He was a professional motorcycle racer and is a legend in the world of pro audio and hi-fi. What have you assholes done lately? And the more you think about that the more you will need to bash Gallo. It really hurts doesn’t it.
