Mogwai @ Terminal 5, NYC - Sept 18, 2008 (soulblend)
Mogwai

"The pairing of venerable Scottish post-rockers Mogwai with Fuck Buttons, a knob-twiddling duo who weave subtle melodies through waves of tribal noise, is inspiring. Both groups make mostly instrumental soundscapes, but go about it in entirely different ways. Mogwai (pictured above) use traditional rock instruments; Fuck Buttons use Nintendo GameBoys, toy microphones, laptops, and whatever else seems to strike their fancy." [Washington City Paper]
The Mogwai / Fuck Buttons tour hit Terminal Five in NYC last night (Sept 18). Fuck Buttons play ATP NY on Saturday. Mogwai play the same upstate festival on Sunday.

Built to Spill, Thurston Moore, Tortoise, Meat Puppets and Bardo Pond play the sold out affair at a country club, TONIGHT (Sept 19). They're all playing full albums. Thurston practiced on Wednesday night in his hometown.

Brian Jonestown Massacre play a show in Brooklyn tonight. They play ATP on Sunday.

Lilys also play ATP on Sunday. They played the opening show at The Bell House in Brooklyn last night.

The Mogwai-scored Zidane hits select theaters on October 24th.

no encore from Mogwai = WAK!

Posted by butternuts | September 19, 2008 11:25 AM

playing for two hours wasn't enough?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:26 AM

Batcat live is MogMetalTastic! WOW!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:28 AM

I'd rather have a very nice set than a "fake" encore

I so wished I could have made it yesterday. Hunted by a freak played live always gets me mad

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:31 AM

two hours was plenty and they played a great set.

it's just that everyone expects encores at this point and ends up standing around after the set watching the stage get broken down, expecting the band to come back out. I would have rather they played for 1:45 and then had a 15 minute encore.

Posted by butternuts | September 19, 2008 11:33 AM

Fuck encores! It's such a bullshit "tradition" at this point.

It's lost all meaning, like the standing ovation.

setlist?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:44 AM

yes, setlist?

When I have a good standing position at shows and I have already drank about 7 beers I don't wanna lose my spot. But i gotta pee. So i drink the last of my 8th beer and use the cup wisely. Whilst standing close the person in front of me so they shield my crime, I unzip my fly and stick the Johnson into the empty cup, then unleash the full bladder. But now I have a cup full of pee. At some shows I can place the cup under the stage, or just place it on the stage, brimming with pee. One time I was so drunk I just put it on the floor and scooted away. Has anyone else participated in this disgusting practice?

awesome powerful show. Mogwai Fear Satan and Helicon 1 were just amazing. Like Herod was intense

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:54 AM

I was more than satisfied with the ending. Where could they have gone after an amazing alternate-tuned Like Herod into the new scorcher Batcat? They already had played My Father My King... Excellent show, but Terminal 5 needs to turn up the volume.

encores are nice because then you know when the set's over and you can stop getting your hopes up for the one they didn't play.

that said, any Mogwai show is a little sad when it ends because I could listen to them for hours and hours. can't wait for ATP Sunday night.

I should be fuck buttoned for not attending this show.

11:53 - I prefer to pee in my show neighbor's mouth...

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:17 PM

Mogwai was soo much better than expected...but ti agree....turn that shit up!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:34 PM

encores should only happen when a crowd truly asks for one(as at last nights awesome why? show, stomping and a real "one more song" chant tore the place up until they came back out. now thats an encore). should not be expected even then. a band doesnt owe you an encore yknow. i wasnt there. was the crowd really asking for another?personally after 2 hours im quite ready to be done with it, no matter what the band is.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:55 PM

I was so psyched the other night when I spotted a full beer resting on the stage. Now I know why it was warm and tasted so funny.

You bastard, Bonecutter!!!

i thought the show was just fine as is. mogwai played a full two hour set, mixing much of the new album with my favorite classics-mogwai fear satan, like herod, 2 rights make 1 wrong, and their best song-helicon 1. it could have been louder, but there was no need for an encore after a 120 minute set and the blistering finale of like herod into batcat. the crowd was fine, the venue is terrible, the sound was soft. terminal five lacks character or any sort of ambience. and i think the guy standing in front of me took the same photograph 700 times with his iphone. it doesn't matter if the song is different, the blurry picture will always look the same.

Fuck Buttons, in some ways, blew Mogwai away; on the other hand mogwai was all sorts of good.

but damn scottish people in the audience - short dude, elvis costello impersonator, etc - seriously shut yer fuckin' yaps!

Show was amazing. I didn't expect it to start so early.I missed the first two songs. I will agree with everyone and say that the sound needed to be turned up. This is the first time that my ears are not buzzing from seeing Mogwai.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:21 PM

Mogwai's sound guy mixed them pretty quietly... peculiar. Still sounded good though.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:26 PM

encores are definitely overrated. besides, terminal 5 has a hard cut off time of 11 i believe. (hence no encore last night)

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:37 PM

I thought the fuck buttons were amazing, totally hypnotic. Had no idea they were so good live.

Really liked the mogwai set, didn't mind the no encore...

The one place I thought the soundman screwed up was on helicon 1, the bass buried the guitars, which killed the (potential) soar of the song. kept waiting for it to get fixed, never happened.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:41 PM

and oh yea, the herod/batcat combo was absolutely heart-stopping.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:45 PM

What's with the curfew anyway? Are they afraid the guys at the BMW dealership are going to get pissed? Why put a venue so far from everything and then end at 11:00?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:49 PM

T5 sux!! Killer show despite the venue. I really dug Dom's new P-Bass. Many a drunken Euro in attendance. Great, FUCK B*****s set too. They made me check my camera, so I wouldn't use it. I went and claimed it an hour later.

Posted by Ned | September 19, 2008 2:10 PM

honestly i couldn't really get into FB's set. got kinda bored of them after a while and their songs seemed to kinda drag forever.

loved when Stuart started rubbing his guitar with his beer bottle during Like Herod, the whole time with a big smile on his face. the whole band seemed to be really enjoying themselves, it seemed.

and ya, for my first time seeing them, i was expecting them to be a lot louder. i brought earplugs with me just in case, but i never felt the need to put them in. they still had some incredibly loud moments, though

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:08 PM

I saw Mogwai earlier in the week in Richmond, and there were a few small differences from what people are mentioning here:

1) The band walked off stage between Herod and Batcat, meaning that there was indeed a real encore.

2) It was loud as hell. I think the crowd was actually more dense toward the back of the room.

All in all, an absolutely stunning performance by both bands.

last nights show was unfuckingbelievable.

my neck is still sore from bobbing my head so much.

anyone know where i can find the setlist from last night????

i loved how they played cody!

Fuck Buttons were so horrible I wanted to punch a stranger in the face. Who these guys think they are, Suicide? Sorry, guys, Suicide did it before and better. Hell, the Liars did it before and better. Madonna did it before and better. They sucked so bad I've lost some respect for Mogwai in recording the FB record. I can't say enough bad things about the fucking 30 minutes of my life that I will never get back. Fuck Buttons? Fuck You!

Posted by I Said It | September 19, 2008 7:47 PM

I Said It - 7:47 speaks the truth!

Fuck buttons are an abomination, absolutely shit music.

Posted by JUGGERNAUTridesagain! | September 19, 2008 9:26 PM

The volume at T5 is fine. How the fuck loud do you want a concert venue to be? Are you guys ears shot so bad that you can't enjoy a concert without standing next to the speakers?

Posted by pants | September 20, 2008 12:18 AM

Fuck Buttons were in absolutely ZERO way better then Mogwai. Criminal Garbage! GREAT SET! The songs that they did play more then made up for some of the ones they omitted. What was up with that one guy yelling "COME ON!" durring ever slower song?! Way to pay money to heckle a band asshole! Also I thought the sound was good. The loud parts were loud and the quiet parts were not. People thing volume is the messure of a good band, and it just isn't. seen/heard a lot of very loud, very awful bands who use over the top volume to cover the fact that they can't play. Mogwai is an EXCELLENT band that just happens to be pretty loud.

Seems like I missed a great show. I saw Mogwai at the Limelight. I could not hear for the entire next day. I appreciate that the shows run by the Bowery people are usually not deafening.
