Oink

Almost one year after authorities shut down the private torrent tracker OiNK, the site's administrators and a few alleged uploaders have been charged, putting an end to the year-long investigation.

Alan Ellis, the administrator, was charged with "conspiracy to defraud" and the uploaders were charged with copyright infringement for the unauthorized upload of one CD. [After Dawn]

"In other semi-related news, a 26 year old man was sentenced today to 18 months in prison, three years of supervised release and a $20,000 fine for his work on the site EliteTorrents - looks like it's a bad week for torrent site admins." [TechSpot]

Im guessing he was sentenced to a minimum security prison. I can only imagine what would happen to a hipster in max security prison.

great. now i am gonna get ass jammed because i downloaded the new kooks album.

I think the whole thing is bullshit. Its not stealing. You are making a copy of a file. Its not like you are taking money out of someones pocket. If I didn't get music for free, I simply wouldn't have it. I wouldn't tell people about the band. I wouldn't spend 15-20 bucks to go see them play live. And I say this as a musician who sells his own CD's at shows and online. I'd rather someone listen to a burned copy than not listen at all!

i'm guessing 9:24 is actually thom york

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2008 9:46 AM

@9:24: you're an idiot. It's definitely stealing, and there's not much that can be said to argue that.

I still do it anyways.

"would you steal a cell phone?"

If I could do so without getting caught, why not?

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2008 10:28 AM

Truth is, the guy (Ellis) was aquitted and no user was ever charged. Also Oink was replaced pretty much immediately by not one but TWO sister sites. ha

This is so ridiculous. Record companies need to bite the bullet and come up with new business models.
