OiNK users being charged

Almost one year after authorities shut down the private torrent tracker OiNK, the site's administrators and a few alleged uploaders have been charged, putting an end to the year-long investigation."In other semi-related news, a 26 year old man was sentenced today to 18 months in prison, three years of supervised release and a $20,000 fine for his work on the site EliteTorrents - looks like it's a bad week for torrent site admins." [TechSpot]Alan Ellis, the administrator, was charged with "conspiracy to defraud" and the uploaders were charged with copyright infringement for the unauthorized upload of one CD. [After Dawn]

I think the whole thing is bullshit. Its not stealing. You are making a copy of a file. Its not like you are taking money out of someones pocket. If I didn't get music for free, I simply wouldn't have it. I wouldn't tell people about the band. I wouldn't spend 15-20 bucks to go see them play live. And I say this as a musician who sells his own CD's at shows and online. I'd rather someone listen to a burned copy than not listen at all!

@9:24: you're an idiot. It's definitely stealing, and there's not much that can be said to argue that.
I still do it anyways.
