Sasha Frere-Jones says Girl Talk does actually mix live

Girl Talk @ All Points West (more by Kyle Dean Reinford)
Girl Talk @ APW

"Several decades ago, Gillis might have been playing at clubs like Danceteria or the World, where the d.j. booth was not necessarily visible from the dance floor and the space had no obvious front or back. The music floated above and around the dancers, who were both witnesses and performers. But, as dance clubs have dwindled in number, acts like Girl Talk are generally playing rock clubs that have traditional stages, and this demands some kind of visual. Gillis is happy to comply, and his open-ended act and communal free-for-all certainly constitutes a live performance. It is ironic, then, that Gillis is so hands on in executing his mixes. If there was ever somebody who could simply hit "Play" and bounce around, it is Gillis. With some version of the Girl Talk mashup coming from the speakers and Gillis jumping out of his pants, most concertgoers would feel as though they had got what they paid for. There is no longer any way of telling whether or not the Wizard is behind the curtain. Does it matter?" [SFJ - The New Yorker] (thx rajohn)
Watch Girl Talk mix live at one of many upcoming shows.

Wait a second. Do you mean to tell me that teenaged speculation by Brooklyn Vegan commenters was factually incorrect? Well I for one am SHOCKED!

ummm bullshit, i played with him and he hits play and jumps around , i watched for the stage....sash, you are a douche bag who doesnt know what you are talking about per usual

I have worked many shows with him, I know exactly what he does, and he does not just hit play.

Sorry, i stupidly forgot to call the poster above me (anon 9:31) a 'hipster douchebag.' How could I have left that out?

Clearly "anon 930" did way more fact-checking than the New Yorker.

who cares if he mixes live or beforehand - it doesn't make the music any better. i hated most of his song choices back in the 1980s and i don't find them ironically entertaining all mixed up now.

SFj and GT are results of a very dark age we've entered. Gt are Ok and SFj is an asshole.

Uilab was awesome!

I got on stage at all points west, he was using his computer a bunch during it, but that still doesnt mean much. I mean really nice live mixes come from turntable DJs, the computer seems like cheating. Regardless i still have had a blast everytime ive been to one of his shows, its just fun music that gets people movin'

Ui's "Sidelong" is pretty great, too!

i bet he checks his email and chats and stuff.

He mixes. The program automatically syncs up the beats for him, but he's mixing "live." I don't care AT ALL about the "art" of DJing or keeping it pure or whatever if the mixes are good and creative that's all I care about.

my friends just recently began listening to girl talk. now, i am looking for new friends. and this person--
"who cares if he mixes live or beforehand - it doesn't make the music any better. i hated most of his song choices back in the 1980s and i don't find them ironically entertaining all mixed up now."-- is right.

definitely like 'feed the animals' more than 'night ripper'. His albums do get old after a few listens though.. I listen to Diplo and CutUpBoys, DJ Craze more than GT, but that is not to say Greg can't put on a rockin dance party... i've seen Paul Van Dyk and Armin Van Buuren do less work during a set. Remember it's all birthday party button bullsh1t!

Who gives a shit what he does at the live shows? He basically throughs an insane party for 2 hrs. Whether he hits play or not doesn't matter; he still does the leg work in the studio. BTW he is doing all of it himself. I saw him this summer and his set lasted from about 10pm until about 3am. He mixed basically mixed Night Ripper and Feed the Animals together and it was amazing. Probabl y the coolest thing I have seen in awhile. He's using other peoples' songs and sill making more original than 90% pf the music being made today. So suck my chocoalte balls....
