Sonic Youth, Vivian Girls, Times New Viking & Wolf Eyes @ McCarren Pool's last show (as we know it) (probably) - pics
photos by Lori Baily

The poster says "McCarren Pool Bye Bye" because Saturday's show (August 30, 2008) was billed as the last show ever at McCarren Pool. If the city has their way, that statement will be true for McCarren Pool, to quote Thurston Moore, "as we know it". That may not be 100% true though because the current renovation plans include some type of "performance space" along with the water. More pictures below....

great pics Lori!

The hands with the butterflies on the fingers on those posters are from an old Jack Goldstein film. In case anyone was wondering. Which nobody probably was. But still.

Did Kim jam with the Vivian Girls?

Welcome back Lori!

Thank You for the photos!!!
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 4:45 PM
how were the new Sonic Youth songs?
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 4:47 PM
new songs were rocking, if fairly standard, somewhat in the rahter ripped vein but with less intertwining noodly riff excursions. kinda very straightforward for SY. granted as thurston said they had jsut been written liek the day before or so, and supposedly he was makign up the words more or less as he went along.

That chick in times new viking is HOT.
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 4:53 PM
the support sucked - it would of been total better if sonic you just played for 3 hours like the Ween show.
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 4:59 PM
The chick in Times New Viking looks like she's about 12 years old.
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 5:00 PM
she's still hot, even if she looks like she's 12.
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 5:03 PM
Times New Viking Chick if you are reading this than hook a brothah up...my name is anonymous and I have no identity.

I would like to reiterate at this time that wolf eyes are a terrifying and horrible affront to artistry creativity and musicality.
they must be pretentious to delusion and beyond to 1) present that mess to an audience as art and 2) to think themselves that they are creating art.
i would prefer to hear pip fart on a snare drum.
sonic youth are still the greatest.

I do appreciate some straight noise music, and I thought Wolf Eyes were shit too until I heard Human Animal. And I do spin Burned Mind once in a while, it has an oddly attractive quality to it. Never seen them live.
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 5:38 PM
so you would bang a 12 year old?
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 5:40 PM
Wolf Eyes are always amazing, I was so excited that I got to be up front for their set in the photo pit. I usually consider it cheating but I liked it this time. SY were wonderful as usual. The new songs were great. I could only have asked for a bit more noisy freakout from both bands, but that's just me.
The aliens came to take Steve Shelley home in that first photo but he insisted on staying to play the show.

The show blew.
Worst Sonic Youth performance I've ever seen. Way too much Daydream Nation after playing the entire record last summer. Catalog is too deep for that.
Wolf Eyes? I can't believe you kids are listening to that shit!
Times New Viking was very good.
Posted by TWB | September 2, 2008 7:13 PM
that picture of wolf eyes guy playing sax is almost as hilarious as hearing it. close your eyes and feel the music, you soulful soulful man!
the noise equivalent of ron burgundy's jazz flute solo.
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 7:23 PM
"Way too much Daydream Nation after playing the entire record last summer. Catalog is too deep for that."
True. Dat. I was thinking the exact same thing. They also played a lot of Daydream at the July 4 show. You'd think they could rehearse some different tunes for the last McCarren and all.
Lazy. I'd rather see Wolf Eyes again than listen to them do "Hey Joni" for the 50th time. (Ok, maybe not...)

goodbye, pool.

that shot of lee and mark grinning at eachother like little schoolboys is adorable.

They covered "New Song" by Howard Jones TWICE?!?! WTF!
Posted by Anonymous | September 2, 2008 9:51 PM
No pictures of the douchebag with the green laser in the looming condos?

Wolf Eyes are one of my favorite bands. You can't force your tastes on people, you either like it or you don't. Also guys if you are not aware check out Mike Connelly's other project, Hair Police, which is just as good. The played the best set of No Fun Fest this year, in my humble opinion.

@TWB:
I agree - too much Daydream Nation and not enough of all the other great music they've made. Times New Viking did play an excellent set, and I was pissed at the way the same people at the front of the crowd who decided to mosh to "Expressway to yr. Skull" refused to even bob their heads to the Times New Viking set.
A bit disappointing, but then again, Sonic Youth is always great.

It'd be nice to have an age verification field for the numerous children stating that they'd "hit that" et al.
As for Wolf Eyes ... Sonic Youth seems to think very highly of them, as they've played countless shows with the SY.
There needs to be a ban on all these damn white kids with MicroKorgs and capos. Generic tripe!
That all said, the olde adage goes "There's no accounting for taste." So why don't you folks learn to get along and show some respect?

shutup homo
Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2008 1:30 AM
Ah. "homo" That's good. Very witty. Children indeed.
Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2008 1:59 AM
Appears most of the BV crowd are chronic masturbators intent on someday "hitting" something ... ANYTHING.
Posted by Anonymous | September 3, 2008 2:45 AM
... so generic and terrible. Fuckin' Duffy, Battles, Vampire this-n-that, Beck, CSS, Fleet Foxes, Deerhunter, TV on the Radio, Cut Copy, Jack White, Sonic Youth, Opeth, etc etc etc. It's not enough to be deaf anymore, now you've gotta be blind as well.

Final Thought:
Wolf Eyes Fucking Sucks So Fucking Bad It's Nearly Unfathomable How Fucking Bad They Fucking Suck.
Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2008 10:39 AM
are you the same guy who hated the Lou Reed / John Zorn show? You sound like the same guy. Your opinion is stupid.
Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2008 10:46 AM
Thank you for all the excellent pix.
Does anyone have or know of pix from the pool after the show finished? what with the wind and all, there was an enchanted, abandoned farewell feeling in the expanse of plastic-cup litter there. i had no camera, but assume some must've caught images? i'd love to see some.
(PS: Sonic Youth own a certain segment of the city from a certain time; and, as far as my longtime show-worn self is concerned, they proved their power to own the here-and-now on Saturday. a wonderful night.)

Hi Slink -
Some NY Times photographer who was FAR more sober than I was got some photos of the nearly empty Pool. You can check their article.
