i love SOTL but i don't think listening to them live will be better than hearing the albums on my awesome stereo in my apartment. not exactly live show material.

i can see why you would think that, but i promise you they are worth seeing. i've managed to catch them 3 times now, and thoroughly enjoyed each show. they do vary things live, and play pieces that are not on records (at least at the time). also, even if it is identical to the record (which it will not be), there is something special about hearing this sort of music at a volume that you generally can't get away with at home (where you have neighbours), and on a system that is better than your own, no matter how good your system is.

Saw them at ATP in May and they were quite unexpectedly my personal highlight of the entire fest...REALLY amazing live, and the visuals were a big part of it. It's definitely not like just putting the record on, it's a pretty uniquely visceral experience...

You'd have to be crazy to miss Brainwaves. I don't care how much higher the cost of flying is these days... You need to pack up your luggage and lug it to Boston for Brainwaves. Empty your bank account to because it's a merch-fest to end all merch-fests. In fact, they should call it Brainwashed Merch Fest. I made enough money ebaying stuff I got there to cover my flight... (kidding. sort of)

Very good place to see them - they don't belong in a bar.

All pickling aside, Brainwaves is a pretty awesome music festival with some great acts.
