The MINI Rooftop NYC Program (Yeasayer, No Age playing)

Mini

For 10 days the rooftop, located on 10th Avenue and 36th street, will be a perfect end of summer hang-out. High above the Hudson River, the MINI Rooftop NYC will feature a daytime wellness area and an open creative space. The daily events include a "Morning Sanctuary" (Yoga and Pilates in the open), "Studio Sessions" for talks and a nightly "Lounge and Celebration" Party. The not to be missed opening and closing parties are in collaboration with Dazed and Confused and V magazines. The location is built by Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushner aka HWKN, an architecture firm focusing on the creation of innovative and responsible manmade environments. Apart from the Rooftop itself, The MINI Space website will be the other spot to see what's going on up there. Videos and report backs will be regularly uploaded. It will also be the way to sign up for special events and parties. If you want to be a part of this event, make sure you sign up to stay on top of what's going down. Or up!

MGMT delivered a cryptic message via their MySpace saying they had a special announcement for NYC regarding September 8th, so maybe they're playing with James Murphy....

money money money money

that's what it takes to book a series like this.

Looks great, but isn't anyone else a little concerned that 90% of the shows the best bands from our little scene are playing these days are sponsored by interests with HUGE money?

Lately every show the bigger bands play is real estate or consumer lifestyle promotional, and the bands are getting paid a lot of money to do it. That is not going to have a good effect on the quality of what music these bands produce in the future.

Do you honestly think the lure of all that money gravy train doesn't going to compromise a band's artistic integrity? You start living a certain financial lifestyle based on your indie one hit wonder status (which, contrary to popular opinion, does make you some moeny, but not by selling records). You get used to an income level, and you start to cater to whatever sound it was that made you get noticed. You stop taking chances and the amount of interesting music you release dwindles.

Look at the careers of some bands you know who got indie popular in the last few years and tell me it isn't true.

There was a time when indie bands were looked down upon for letting their name get wrapped up in product promotion. Maybe that wasn't such a quaint concept?

i think no age is SO overrated. and seeing them before such an amazing band as the liars made them look even more boring.

Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2008 9:54 AM

Yes, MGMT played a great set from the stage on the rooftop billboard! Diplo's set wasn't very good though.

Posted by KevinV | September 5, 2008 10:44 AM

boycott sponsorship shows and boycott the bands who play sponsorship shows

Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2008 10:48 AM

"MGMT played a great set"

that is impossible, not that they played, but that it was great.

fuck this elitist vip money bullshit

bands should play real shows

Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2008 12:14 PM

And you should take a lower paying job because some people think it would be a greater service to the public.

I love how everyone gets upset because a band is trying to make a living. Realize its not an easy climate to make money, and one way to do it is play shows like this. That way the band has the money to tour and make records. Its fun to complain about this shit when you are 17 years old, but when you become an adult you realize that even bands need to pay bills, feed themselves, and raise families.

Don't make me stab you.

Ray Lewis is almost correct, except that I pay someone else to feed me.

Feeding yourself is for peons.

it's tacky and corrosive to let your art get used to promote a product or a real estate development.

if you want to make money off your music, do it playing shows and getting people to buy tickets.

Don't do all this cheap corporate shill garbage. It turns you into a whore.

Posted by Anonymous | September 5, 2008 1:55 PM

Ray Lewis, everything you said is right. This is how these bands make a living.

But at the same time, I think that Anonymous 1:53 AM has a very good point. And I don't think he/she really got upset, and especially not over a band making a living.

What happens to the quality of the music? Where is the line?

Also, will say that though these bands are playing a "private" show, many of these bands have given back to their fans. Diplo, MGMT, and No Age all had free shows this summer. But maybe that doesn't make a difference because they were still getting a ton of money thrown at them by River to River, Jelly NYC, and Summerstage? Who knows?

MGMT is on Sony/Columbia records [the exposure from which probably helped them to be the only band to "sell out" McCarren in its last summer] and James Murphy made an hour long song for Nike. It seems like missing the point to complain about this.

Posted by Anonymous | September 6, 2008 12:19 PM

yo la tengo and the breeders also "sold out" mccarren, asshole.

Posted by Anonymous | September 6, 2008 2:12 PM

did anyone have any luck winning entrance into any of these shows?

Posted by Anonymous | September 8, 2008 4:53 PM

I registered on that silly Mini site as I'd like to go to the Yeaysayer show, but never heard a peep from them...

Posted by Beeeeeeve | September 13, 2008 3:28 PM

Playing any of these bands on a stereo in our Brooklyn apartments with good friends looks far more interesting than going to this place.

I don't see the need to stress it... besides it was quite obvious that these bands were headed this direction a long time ago. Forget them.. forget this lame MINI "Hell's Kitchen" crap. Did you see the videos? lame.
