Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2008 10:02 PM

i'd hit katy. since i already know what she looks like in a bra and underwear.

Go eff yerself you wolf pussy!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2008 11:17 PM

why is the video so bad? maybe it's "lo-fi", but half of it looks like they are doing prop comedy in a sauna.

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2008 11:19 PM

they remind me of The Shaggs for some reason, but more capable

Posted by Anonymous | September 17, 2008 11:57 PM

kickball katy

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 12:25 AM

wow they're on some vintage metallica touring shit from now till the end of the year. i guess you've gotta strike (and strike, and strike) while the iron is hot. at this point i bet slant 6 would kill if they did a reunion

VG are fine. the powers of promotion might have thoroughly outpaced the ability of the next wave of kids to rock freshly. at least it's the wheel being reinvented over and over. wheels are the fuckin best.

Posted by dola | September 18, 2008 12:47 AM

yes yes im sure all of you have banged all famous rock-star women and every single semi-attractive woman in williamsburg, it is settled, we all believe you and are very impressed by you, you can shut up now

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 12:48 AM

I'd hit it — I mean the gong. Literally.

"i am a jealous poster trying to make someone else feel bad because i am jealous and i have to make myself feel *GOOD*, because i am jealous. fuck.. i am so fucking jealous. i have to make myself feel GOOD because i am JEALOUS.."

hahah. i know, i know.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 1:27 AM

I can actually tell just by looking at these photos and the way they hold their instruments that they have no clue how to play.
I'm not one to beg for virtuosity but at least look like you've held a stringed electric instrument before.

Oh what do I know? I'm SURE they're great...

Posted by Rostam Weekend | September 18, 2008 3:35 AM

There is no way on any Earth ever imagined that that drummer needs or deserves that gong even in the slightest.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | September 18, 2008 7:03 AM

do you think they have enough tattoos?
sheesh.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 7:24 AM

"I can actually tell just by looking at these photos and the way they hold their instruments that they have no clue how to play."

That's what makes VG so good, 3:35am. The gong belonged to Boris, or some other boring shit.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 9:18 AM

Her guitar of choice is a Fender Squier: a cheap Japanese guitar meant for 11 year old kids as their first guitar.....not touring musicians in a band.

Get a real guitar for chrissakes. Are you that broke or do you just simply not know any better because you just started playing this past year?

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 9:25 AM

this would work better if they were Asian.

Posted by beast | September 18, 2008 9:25 AM

that was boris' gong, you bojos.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 9:35 AM

Hey anoy 9:25 what kind of guitar do you use? Oh yeah no one cares...

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 9:51 AM

"Her guitar of choice is a Fender Squier: a cheap Japanese guitar meant for 11 year old kids as their first guitar.....not touring musicians in a band."

i'd wager that guitar was "given" to her by fender. whilst great musicians get great guitars given to them by good companies like fender, shitty ones...well you know the rest.

Early B52's meets Heavenly.

I'd listen to it.

Posted by drewo | September 18, 2008 10:04 AM

i think the appeal of the vivian girls is that they appeal to the early-90s cutiepop/shoegaze nostalgia that pervy 30-something indie dudes harbor with abundance. Everyone I know under 25 thinks they're full of shit, whereas every (dude) I know older than 25 seems to really adore them in this bizare fusion of Lolita-ish physical lust and high school indie nostalgia.

For example their main "scene" backers include the old-ish Todd P, who put them on every other good bill he's put together this past year, and Kevin from what's your rupture, who is apparently dating Katy

...food for thought!

i'm a 28 year old male and i like the bizzare vocal harmonies. the music, although roughshod, compliments them perfectly.

they may be full of shit, but it just works to me. i'll buy the album.

Posted by beast | September 18, 2008 10:48 AM

9:55: Good point - that thing used to sell for like 100 bucks or less - for Fender to "give" any band (regardless of status) an instrument this low-end would seem more like a slap in the face than a charitable gesture.

9:51: I assume you are just unfamiliar with the subject matter - its a bit strange that someone playing all these fairly big shows (like McCarren Pool, etc) can't at least get something halfway decent to play......that's a rookie instrument and anyone who has ever set foot in a Guitar Center or whatever knows this.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 10:48 AM

given their highly derivative twee-gaze-rehash stylings, their excessively amateurish musicianship, and their "bored with life" stage prescence, its almost a travesty that they've been given all these amazing opportunities. They should be stuck playing for 20 people at silent barn for a few more years like everyone else has to.

The fact that they got to open for Sonic Youth when there are so many longer established and more deserving Brooklyn noise-pop bands (i.e. Parts n' Labor!?!) is almost absurd.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 11:03 AM

I liked the bass player better when she was in my freshman math class and wearing a From Autumn to Ashes sweatshirt

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 11:06 AM

Wow, people saying overly offensive and personal things about the Vivian Girls on the Brooklyn Vegan comments.

What a cliche. Why can't these commenters stop reinventing the wheel.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 1:36 PM

I love that song 'where do you run?' and the guitarist has great legs.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 2:47 PM

wow there is some seriously trashy personal shit people are saying on here.

you guys are obviously jealous as fuck of these ladies' success. Actually, you're barely trying to hide that anymore. At least now you're revealing yourselves to be acquaintance level haters versus the fake "anonymous fan" hater comments you were leaving before.

Still, attacking people for their sex lives? That's some tacky shit right there.

All I can say is, dude, you should rechannel the anger into making your own art that gets as successful. All this bitching on the internet just makes you look like the pathetic crank loser that you are. You're certainly not convincing anyone else to share your opinion of this band! You hardly sound like you believe it yourself.

Maybe you should juts break down and cry about how everybody else gets attention but me. oh boo hoo!

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 4:13 PM

Relax. The personal shit spewed from trolls is not the substantive issue here. The main point is that VG are just another very average, very derivative band that, due to a number of conditions, have reached a level of popularity that a large number of people are calling bullshit on. Not everything is subjective.

"All I can say is, dude, you should rechannel the anger into making your own art that gets as successful."

Besides this sounding like The Secret, I always thought those were two seperate considerations.

Posted by Red Herring | September 18, 2008 5:02 PM

actually 5:02, many many many literate music fans find Vivian Girls' record to be an instant classic.

You don't speak for everyone, and actually, you don't speak for anyone but yourself - so please refrain from making large, authoritative, generalizing, poorly informed statements about what a band's music is or isn't.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 6:14 PM

5:02 don't know shite

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 6:19 PM

Well. I saw them for the first time at the above show and I thought they were really cute and fun and obviously having a good time, which is always nice. I bet they're very nice girls, and I'm not sure why people think it's okay to make potentially very hurtful comments like a lot of the ones above.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 6:30 PM

since when were these girls considered a "success"?

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 6:40 PM

I think they've come from playing kinda twee & amateurishly to being a really solid sludgy rock band with driving, angry songs

new drummer is fuckin ON and the two ladies up front have gotten way tight from relentless touring.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 6:48 PM

fucking christ man, you're attacking this woman, in public, for being bad in bed?? somebody should seriously kick your ass.

speaking of which, don't you think she'll be able to figure out who wrote the comment?

also, she obviously dumped you and you're exacting revenge. Heartbroken much?

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 7:58 PM

I am volunteering to be that somebody to seriously kick that worthless douchebag's ass.

On happier note I've really enjoyed what I've heard from VG so far and look forward to an album.

Posted by greenpointave@franklin | September 18, 2008 9:30 PM

Bad in bed, bad musically - what's next, bad manners? And while I do enjoy an occasional appearance by Buster Bloodvessel, even that tubby bastard's snoring carries with it more energy and musical proficiency than these three vapid, vacant flavors of the microsecond.

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | September 18, 2008 9:40 PM

as a dude, I'm going to say what's fucking obviously happening here but none of the women can say without being labeled "hysterical":

many many of the comments on this thread today are plainly SEXIST and the reason you guys are attacking this band as being supposedly incompetent musicians is 100% because they are women.

This tiny vocal minority that is shit talking this band here refuse to give them any respect because they are women. What's even uglier are the people who are shitty enough at life that they would dis the drummer's looks, or even more so, the dude who keeps claiming to have slept with one of the band members and wants to shit talk their sex life.

That's just pathetic, dude. Get a fucking life and stop dissing the girls who dump you! I hope she figures out who you are and tells every woman in town so everyone will know not to ever fuck you, you human piece of garbage.

Anyway, The dissing of this band for their ability to play is totally sexist bullshit. I see hundreds of bands play live shows every year, and I have seen this band more than a dozen times. I can tell you that, while not virtuosos, the Vivian Girls play on the level of most bands out there.

If they were men you'd be praising them for their sloppy paired down garage pop genius (see Black Lips, Psychedelic Horseshit, Tyvek, etc). Because they're women, you want to call them the Shaggs. Their playing may be basic, but they know what they're doing out there.

Add to that the fact that they have a fiery energy that you don't see often, plus a novel sound (garage meets psych meets indie pop meets ghostly harmonies + Wipersesque minor key surfy melodies), plus they've written a record of almost all singles-quality songs.

They are clearly popular and getting more so. A lot of people from a lot of different indie subcultures have heard their record (most with no idea of what they look like) and liked it. It's a very frequently downloaded record. Check out how easy it is to find of Soulseek if you doubt it. It's in a lot of people's itunes.

All this for a band that only existed for less than a year and have toured once, and who until very recently were on a label with no distribution and no publicity department. Word has spread organically about these ladies, because the shit is good.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 10:46 PM

The slagging on this band is getting pretty ugly on here. Attacking them for their looks, their sex lives, and saying they can't play. that is pretty lowblow bullshit.

vivian girls deserve the attention they are getting. They aren't music theory experts or top notch players, but neither were the Ramones or Nirvana or the Velvet Underground or Pavement. All of those bands wrote compelling pop music that succeeded with good songs and a new sound, and so do these girls.

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 10:49 PM

if 10:50 ain't a totally sexist pig who outta be banned from getting laid in NYC, I don't know what is

Posted by Anonymous | September 18, 2008 10:53 PM

What a lot of critics - jealous or disheartened ones notwithstanding - of this band are pointing out is that what's implicit in their lack of apparent musical proficiency is that they fundamentally look as though they DON'T CARE. There are loads of bands out there, fronted by women - The Slits and Kevin Shields are two that spring immediately to mind - that use artistic naivete to their advantage and come off as sincere, entertaining and committed. Vivian Girls just look they couldn't give two sacks of shit about anything. It comes out in their video, their photographs - and, not surprisingly, in rumors of their sexual prowess or lack thereof. The gentle indie reader would like to know that there is some kind of effort expended, some kind of stance taken or sleep lost but Vivian Girls look as interested in communicating this as they might be about reporting on their last lousy lay. Fuck you and your equivocating feminist sleight-of-hand - Vivian Girls look like they care about precisely nothing in this world, so why should we care about them?

Posted by Crosseyed Sniper | September 18, 2008 11:57 PM

the blonde is kinda cute.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:22 AM

I rarely comment on BV but I just had to put in two cents of positive comments for the band here after reading all this shit. Agree with 10:49. Everything on here is because they are women! And because most people reading BV are men sitting in their rooms researching "cool bands" and masturbating all night! I hope the girls themselves don't take anything in this thread seriously, it's probably just one or two people spouting off shit they don't even know anything about! All three vivian girls are beautiful ladies and everyone (guys included) I know agree!

People love talking shit about certain bands, and I guess Vivian Girls have become one of these. Personally I find it incredibly exciting to have such a band around! I've been seeing them play since their first show and am rooting for them all the way. I love their sound and they are great people as well. And no one should say anything bad about Kevin either cause he's an awesome guy too!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 1:31 AM

VIVIAN GIRLS RULE!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:08 AM

Best band. Rule the school.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:09 AM

Is the cost of someone's guitar something to bitch about? Seriously?

What kind of guitar could Robert Johnson or Charley Patton afford?

Not that I'm comparing Vivian Girls to those guys, but, you've got to be fucking kidding me.

I will let you know how intelligent and creative your comments on Brooklynvegan are based on how expensive the computer you typed them on is.

Also: Talking about girl bands based on looks: YAWN.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:17 AM

"There are loads of bands out there, fronted by women - The Slits and Kevin Shields are two that spring immediately to mind - that use artistic naivete to their advantage and come off as sincere, entertaining and committed."

What the fuck are you even talking about? Kevin Shields is a fucking person, not a band....is it so fucking obvious to point out your blatant misogyny in saying "kevin shields" when you obviously mean my bloody valentine, way to prop up the dude in disrespect to the women also in the band. i mean seriously, your fucking jokes write themselves.

the shit written on this site is absurdly fucked up and insulting to people of all genders. as funny as you fuckwads may think it is to say "i'd hit that" or, essentially, "dumb girls thinking they could play music like us boys" it comes across as being ass-backwards motherfuckers. grow the fuck up.

seriously, mocking the quality of a persons guitar? go listen to some fucking joe satriani and shit yourself. if you honestly think that matters you don't know shit. beat happening could play a shitty guitar and make it sound better than any dude with a really fancy, expensive guitar so what do you say to that? the acting out of misogynistic bullshit on this site is fucking pathetic.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:53 AM

Here's the thing, based on real-life experience:
Their records are GOOD, which makes you want to see them live. Their shows are NOT as good as their records, which kinda of bums people out and turn them into haters. When you go and see them live you realize they are cute, which works against them. Now, if you care how much they paid for their instruments or whether they know all possible fingerings of a Bb7#11 chord, you are listening to the wrong kind of music. I personally enjoy basic rock'n'roll and think it will be fun to see how this band will develop. Are they lucky? Yes, but it's not their fault you're not.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 5:54 AM

so much anger on this blog.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 8:03 AM

FOUR WAY MILKSHAKE WAS BETTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 8:17 AM

I take issue with the person who says they dont care. Ive seen them up close at shows and they most definitely play and look like they care a lot. also as to the statement that they are not as good live as on record, I never even heard their record or any of their songs except in live setting, and I like them. Also they most definitely deserved a spot opening for SOnic Youth, and if you were there you saw Thurston standing at side stage enjoying the show (nodding his head and smiling). thats good enough endorsement for me.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 9:11 AM

Yeah, that's a pretty intense tour schedule for people who supposedly don't care –

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 9:37 AM

Lots of great music has been created with shitty equipment.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 9:41 AM

"All this for a band that only existed for less than a year and have toured once, and who until very recently were on a label with no distribution and no publicity department. Word has spread organically about these ladies"

Yes the sexism here is vile and should be condemned.

Given that, 'as a dude' is out of his mind if he can't see the contradiction between a band being around for a few months with little touring & no distribution while touting them as having been grown 'organically.' I hate to tell you but the five (at best) internet echo chambers you hear about new bands from are about as organic as a truckload of ddt. Try again.

Again, VG do some nice things but on the whole their shtick, very much still developing, is average and retread. How many times have we seen this story before? They are getting a ton of attention WAY early on - here's a receipe for another overhyped band that gets discarded when the next hot shit comes along. It's not about who 'deserves' anything-I'm not a musician and I couldn't give a shit about who they open for. Great for them! I'd love to play with Sonic Youth. But saying that this is healthy for the development of a band's artistic process or whatever you'd like to call it belies a vested interest or complete fucking ignorance.

This board is full of douchebag commenters. It's also full of people baffled by how little we've come from the heyday of NME tastemakers.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 10:11 AM

you are all idiots. even the correct, logical posters. you are all a league of morons.

fin

fuck you all.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 10:17 AM

10:11 AM, while agree with you that the kind of exponential blowin' up thing that's happening to the Viv Girls is not often a good thing for a bands developed, I think you're also way nuttier than the original post you were responding to.

You're actually more naive than most, because what you are is a poorly-informed conspiracy theorist.

Vivian Girls didn't have a publicist, or a label with a publicist, until a little over a month ago. The "hype" (as you call it) that has made them popular has actually been organic, in the sense that it has been driven by fans who responded to the record and liked what they heard.

If their was bloggage about them, it wasn't provoked my any master of puppets behind the scenes, pulling stings. It's not like we're talking Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes here, for fucksake!

The scale of our little indie world, it is still possible for things to catch on through genuine word of mouth. The hype machine only comes into play later on in bands' careers. I know it's hard to accept, but Vivian Girls popularity, to date, has been driven by real human beings who listened to their record or saw them live and talked about it to their friends. Sorry to bust up your cartoon worldview, dude!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 10:44 AM

this is 10:44. I don;t know what happened typpwise this that 1st paragraph, but it was supposed to read like this:

10:11 AM, while *I* agree with you that the kind of exponential blowin' up thing that's happening to the Viv Girls is not often a good thing for a bands develop*ment*, I think you're also way nuttier than the original post you were responding to.

that is all...

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 10:46 AM

while 2:43 has got the right idea, I think that 11:57 was actually referring to the noise experimentalist who calls herself "Kevin Shields."

But that does prove that 11:57 is into some pretty obscure musical territory, and suggests that he/she is probably someone who is from the same little circle that produced VG's. That circle would be:

garage / noise record collector assholes, and guys who go to the really tiny Todd P shows

my point being, the guy who posted 11:57 (and the same guy who probably posted lots of the other truth stretching, negative, largely sexist anonymous bullshit posts on this thread) is someone who knows the band and whose own band and/or noise project and/or journalism career hasn't made it like the Vivian Girls have. It's about JEALOUSY, folks.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 10:56 AM

thats a great song and video. I dont get how they got on the same bill as Jay Reatard though.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:11 AM

the pairing makes a lot of sense to me.

they're both young bands taking garage and doing something new with it. they both write rowdy pop songs and came from punk.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:28 AM

"The scale of our little indie world"

"guys who go to the really tiny Todd P shows"

ah to be young and delusional.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 11:55 AM

here are my problems with this band:

they have silly monikers and are from new jersey. and they're not the misfits. sorry, but i still think that they are hacks regardless of their gender, fanciness of their instruments, or level of notoriety.
they just dont play, sing, or perform well live. simple as that. but i suppose folks who dig them have the right to their opinion, however, i do call bullshit on the crazy amount of attention and size of the shows such a new band has been so 'lucky' to play. but this was a really entertaining thread to read. so hey, we all win!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 12:00 PM

"here are my problems with this band:
...from new jersey. and they're not the misfits"

Are we seriously still playing the NJ card in this day and age? Who gives a fuck? When half of Brooklyn is made up of transplants from Ohio and most of "metro" New Jersey is closer to Manhattan than half of that same borough of Brooklyn (not to mention Queens or Staten Island), wht's there to get up on a high horse about?
Plus, have we forgotten about Bruce Springsteen, Frank Sinatra, Monster Magnet, Dälek, Frankie Valli, Whitney Houston, Debbie Harry, Mike Jourgensen (Wilco), Queen Latifah, Karen O, ...um... uh... Yo La Tengo, Patti Smith... uh...
(somebody help me out here)

Wow this thread is still going strong. Loving it but cannot understand why the bickering back and forth over VIVIAN GIRLS????
A band not even really established yet and certainly not some force in the music world.

Here are a few truths and you can believe it or not:

-The blog world and certainly the blog world centered around NYC does not really have much impact on the greater part of the music industry. Sorry you dopes.

-Playing small shows around the city does not make you a major force in the record industry.

-Selling out 1000 copies of your record does not make you a player.

-If you have any real inside connection to the music scene in NYC you know that cassie and katy have fucked their share of guys throughout the tri state area. Are they sluts? That is a judgement call but let's just say you are trading in used goods when you take either of their pants off. Nothing to be proud of.

-The VIv girls obsessively read these blogs and are probably more than a few of the comments on this thread and the others.Although they and their friends will deny it till the cows come home.

-Playa hating is lame. The record is actually really good. The live shows not that much. They will get better most probably and this will not be the last you hear of them. They have the potential to be much bigger. Oh and hating on the guitar someone is playing is so fucking stupid

-The person who said the Velvet Underground were not proficient musicians is absolutely clueless. In fact mentioning the VU in a Vivian Girls thread is seriously insulting to Lou, John, Sterling, Maureen, Nico and Angus. Even to Doug and Billy Yule as well.

Face the truth or stay deluded.

Bye Girls, talk to you soon.

Kisses.

"I rarely comment on BV but I just had to put in two cents of positive comments for the band here after reading all this shit. Agree with 10:49. Everything on here is because they are women!"

Maybe, but in my humble opinion they got a pass on being a crappy live band for a while due to being "cute girls" or "fun" which I never quite understood

Granted, I haven't seen them since shortly after they started, so they may be much better now. Either way, their music doesn't appeal to me but more power to them if they're successful at it.

the velvet underground weren't especially good musicians in the mid 60s when they mattered. maybe john cale, but the rest? garage guys.

these girls don't fuck around anymore than the average Williamsburgers

they're young and attractive, they get a little ass, nothing special. I can tell you they don't cheat on their boyfriends.

This whole subject that keeps coming up, makes it pretty clear that we're dealing with a jilted ex here, hence the intensity of the shit talking. Sorry you weren't up to snuff, dude! She dumped your ass, all of us reading your comments can see why.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:15 PM

Nico couldn't sing, it drove the rest of them crazy. Read that in a book.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 2:23 PM

you haven't seen them in a year, why would you have any authority on their current playing prowess? just like yo mama told ya, just keep your mouth shut if you don't know what you're talking about

Am I the only one who finds all these people posting back-and-forth about the Vivian Girls' sex lives to be a little creepy?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:52 PM

So they like to have sex with alot of dudes when is that a crime? I'd hit it...give me the blonde and the redhead there's no 'I' threesome!

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:57 PM

don't buy into 2:57's line of bullshit. he don't know shit about these women.

he's clearly an ex and now he's been called out for it so he's trying to throw off the suspicion.

These girls aren't sluts by any stretch of the definition, but more importantly, why is that grounds for criticism or even any of our business?

if they were dudes it wouldn't even have come up.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:58 PM

"These girls aren't sluts by any stretch of the definition"

How do you know that? Are you a Vivian Girl or a Vivian Girl friend?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:00 PM

I have known them for years

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:02 PM

Please, please air your dirty laundry, ok?

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:14 PM

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:21 PM

BV just reached an all time low...and that's saying ALOT.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:28 PM

The fact that these girls sex lives are an issue is ridiculous. I don't think it matters how many people they make out with, that's their issue. What does it have to do with their music?

The fact that they are being criticized/embarrassed for what they do in their personal lives is not only ridiculous, but completely sexist. If this was a band of guys, no one would be discussing this, if anything they would be praised for living the rock n roll lifestyle. Because they are girls, they are "sluts."

If you hate their music, their band, or if think they don't deserve the hype they're getting, that's fine, it's your opinion. But to cut them down, based on their looks or sexual orientation, on the internet, is despicable.

So it's not in question, I am a friend on the band, which is why I feel the need to post this. But I don't have to know them to know this line of comments is completely inappropriate.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:32 PM

The fact that people dont realize that people put up things that are extreme and absurd just to get people like the above dude to go crazy on them because its funny.... is reDONK.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:34 PM

uh...i think people are bringing up sex in this thread so much is because its the only reason they are popular since their music is so terrible. its not sexist, if it were a bunch of good looking guys in a scene of all girls(hanson, boy bands, etc.) getting where they are because of their looks when their music is a joke they get called out on it too.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:41 PM

It's not that I don't get these people are looking for a reaction (like you're probably doing.) It's the fact that these particular comments go too far. These girls do read what is said about them (this is a brooklyn blog,) and you need to consider, that like them or not, they are real people, who are getting insulted by insecure assholes who hide behind computers.

But I won't be encouraging this any further, so that's all I got say.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:42 PM

see, the people who think the band sucks (or else are jealous and just want other people to think the band sucks without giving them a chance) are being shot down by the people who know that the Vivian Girls are a good, unique, young band. Because the haters are losing that substantive argument, they've moved on to personal attacks and innuendo. it's just like politics.

face it, these girls are good people and they are in a good band. they've achieved some small success. I'm sorry that threatens your sense of self-worth, haters, but them's the simple facts.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:45 PM

I mean I'm not hiding come meet me on 71st and second. I'm sure we'd get along. People dont "hide" or not think that people are "real." I mean if you want to write a book about the morality about blogs...go for it. The world is too PC, if someone looks at a bunch of chicks on stage and talks about fucking them... big deal. Are the V girls really offended? If they are, they should work on that. Cuz its a blog... it doesn't mean shit. What your saying works the other way too, it doesn't mean anything so why should they or you get offended... I mean its crazy you botherd to even post on here to try to defend anything in the first place. But anyway. here is a funny joke: "A rabbi walks into a bar with a frog on his shoulder. The bartender looks at him and says, "hey where did you get that" and the frog says, "BROOKLYN THERES HUNDREDS OF THEM!"

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 4:46 PM

Everybody's sick of 22 year old dumbfucks who think being an asshole is "performance art"

"face it, these girls are good people and they are in a good band. they've achieved some small success. I'm sorry that threatens your sense of self-worth, haters, but them's the simple facts."

So any critique of them as artists is immediately dismissed as "hating" or "sexist". Imagine a world so small! Look, judging by those photographs and that video, they suck shit - and by the looks of it, they don't even do that with any conviction.

You can put lipstick on a pig, but...well, you know the rest.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 5:06 PM

4:56 PM, no, discussing their personal sex lives in a derogatory way and saying they can't play when they can clearly play as decently as most, that's what's sexist

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 5:06 PM

but they actually cant play their instruments very well. regardless of their gender.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 5:11 PM

they play fine. the drummer rocks, the guitarist and bassist play solidly enough and have tightened considerably in the last 4 months of playing all the time.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 5:15 PM

[9/19 2:57 PM is] clearly an ex...

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 3:58 PM

Maybe Rough Trade should reconsider placing ads in a place where sexual harassment runs rampant.

Realize BV doesn't make the comments, but they're responsible for space provided.

This is beyond whether a band is good or not, these are personal attacks against people by name. Specific things.

Whether a band is good or not is one thing, but whoever has these things to say about people they (supposedly) know hiding behind an anonymous comment need to look in the mirror.

Petty and ugly.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 7:32 PM

jesus fuck.. ANON 2:15PM

you were actually wrong on THREE accounts.

"in the mid-60s, when they mattered"
"WHEN THEY MATTERED"

are you fucking kidding me? go fucking learn exactly who the Velvet Underground is. you know TWO shits about them. they did NOT matter in the mid 60's to even the late 60's. they're record did not sell well. EVERYONE knows they became extremely popular years after they had broken up. everyone fucking knows this, except your ridiculous uninformed fuckfaced self. go mutilate yourself you worthless piece of shit bitch. fuck off.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 7:59 PM

>EVERYONE knows they became extremely popular years after they had broken up.

The VU were extremely popular? I must have slept through that.

Posted by Anonymous | September 19, 2008 8:39 PM

Velvet Underground never became extremely popular until the mid to late 1980's, when they were heavily reissued. To average people. they're not as well known as the Beatles or the Stones or a lot of other 60's bands, even now.

at the beginning they were average musicians with the exception of John Cale, who was classically trained. They weren't strangers to their instruments or anything but they were young, amateur, regular dude players. They got really good, but only after playing together constantly as part of the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Anyway. whether they were exceptional players or they weren't, they played simple, repetitive, straight parts. It was the way they layered them together that made them great, that's their brilliance.

when I said "when they mattered" I am referring to when they mattered most to the cannon of music, I don't give a shit how popular anyone is or was or will be.

The point being, they're an example of how you don't need insane virtuoso chops to make excellent rock music.

7:59, you need to take deep breaths, I'm worried for your heart with all these outbursts. It's just music, man!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 1:42 PM

how were the Vivian Girls last night? was it packed? more importantly, was anyone filming it? I want some vid footage!

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 1:52 PM

did they play last night somewhere?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 1:53 PM

Cake Shop

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 2:00 PM

probably was packed. who knows, they play a lot and their buzziness is bigger than their draw is.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 2:05 PM

I went to kill time before the Rifles at Merc. Their drummer was out (missed a flight) so they had their roommate filling in. Really short set (8 songs in about 20 minutes)which I'm sure can be attributed to the new guy learning the tracks that morning. It was full but CakeShop holds 75 people so that doesn't say much. Can't say I left as a huge fan but it wasn't the best night to judge them on given the circumstances.

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 2:26 PM

Personally, don't think much of the band's music, but if they're doing well, more power to them. They're obviously putting in the work.
Both the pro- and anti- sides of this argue like retarded 6 year olds. It's your opinion, and that extends to and matters only within the small confines of the space between your ears.
If you don't like them, don't buy the record, don't go to their shows. If you do, well, buy it and enjoy, and go have fun. Is that so hard to understand?

Posted by Anonymous | September 20, 2008 4:19 PM

4:19 thats not really true because by writing and talking, you know, expressing yourself, you can influence other people's opinions.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 12:05 AM

12:05, that's absolutely true, when the writing is well done, persuasive and coherent, and provides solid reasons that might make someone think twice. Really, though, was there anything in this thread that would have changed your opinion? The majority of this thread was simply crass personal attacks on the members, and provided nothing of substance. If you dont like the band, talk about what you don't like about their music, and what you found unappealing. Put some thought into it, because your opinions matter, but your (not you in specific, just as a general thought) stupid opinions don't.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 9:09 AM

real criticism = they don't play live shows as well as they sound on their cds.

false criticism = OMG! huge SLUTS!

what makes a band great is how many people want to see them, want to listen to them, and want to buy their records. this band is not only new, young, inexperienced - it's great. they're popular because of the total package - cute girls with great voices included. they're popular because people buy tickets, cds, and want to see them live.

i'm sorry if you've been on the scene for the last few decades and play better than these chicks, but are not nearly as popular musically. that doesn't mean your band is better than them. it just means no one likes you. maybe you should consider doing something else. i hear there's work for computer programmers.

Posted by Anonymous | September 21, 2008 11:31 AM

Best New Music = No longer just for Brooklyn.

Posted by Anonymous | October 3, 2008 6:48 AM

Well, this has been a painful reading experience. What's the controversy about? A sort-of interesting band got popular quickly by way of internet buzz and saw-it-first enthusiasm. They're ok. Lots worse, lots better. Sure are cute females. Hey, maybe they don't deserve their popularity? Possible explanation: all sluts. Possible explanation 2: everybody is stupid except for me.

I haven't seen them live yet but plan to based on the endorsment of a friend whose taste I trust. I should also mention that I feel totally jealous of their success myself, having played in bands orbiting KBK's scene for years. Life is difficult and lonely sometimes, but things like music and art somehow keep rolling forward. And, occassionally backwards or off to the side. I liked that poster who said how great the wheel was. Keep cranking out the derivative punk n' roll, ain't no shortage on time or space.

Oh, wait.
