Willie Nelson (& Norah Jones) @ Radio City, NYC - pics
photos by Fresh Bread

Willie Nelson headlined Radio City Music Hall in NYC last night (Sept 25, 2008). FB said, "Willie played for almost 2 hours, must have been 20 - 25 songs total....all the classics, some covers, a special guest (norah jones). Really was very good and definitely special." Jakob Dylan opened the show. More pictures below...

Yawn-fest.

Jakob Dylan surprised me. He's better without his band.

I'd like a refund.

what a waste...

Wow....thumbs down, yawn fest, refund?!?!
Willie Nelson is a Legend.
Tell me what band I should go see instead of Willie?
Oh, and tell me your age with your answers?

Those comments sound like bored idiots who weren't even there. Don't be fooled.

It was a decent show. Jakob was good too!
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 1:41 AM
good show!

TXn, don't let the clueless dumbasses who comment on this blog bother you. Willie was incredible as usual. I try to see a show most nights and this was one of the most enjoyable I've seen all year.

ages of the haters = under 25
their favorite band = vampire weekend
willie is s fucking legend, he forgot more about music by the age of twenty then you will ever know.
he's touched the hearts and souls of more people that he's never met than people you will EVER KNOW in your whole life.
ps. jakob dylan is not bad, i've heard some solo stuff of his. I still like that first Wallflowers album, there are some really great songs on it, if it is a little dated in production...
Posted by yoga | September 26, 2008 8:46 AM
I saw Jakob a few weeks ago at a taping for "The Artist's Den" at the Desmond Tutu center a few weeks back. I think he is a great songwriter, and The Wallflowers were a a really good band. However, I found his set to be very monotonous. Most of the songs were the same tempo with very little variety.
I don't want to knock him though because I think he is very talented.
I really need to see Willie before he gets too old. I never saw Johnny Cash and now it is too late.

VAMPIRE WEEKEND RULES!

You really shouldn't dis Willie Nelson. Even if you're not into his music, the guy deserves respect. He is, as the poster above noted, in a class with Johnny Cash. His political activism is also very admirable. And his voice is butter.
Posted by Deb | September 26, 2008 9:24 AM
I'd rather be listening to Radiohead.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 9:28 AM
his voice is more like burnt toast.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 9:40 AM
Willie’s great, but he should leave that stupid Texas flag in Texas.

Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 10:05 AM
radiohead are a good band; however, their fans are pretentious, intolerable blowhards. kind of like the grateful dead. good band, idiot fans. taints the legacy.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 10:08 AM
this show was great. also saw MBV this week, also great show. radiohead are good. would like to see a willie setlist if anyone knows it.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 10:12 AM
Radiohead is not a good band. They are the BEST band!
Fuck Willie.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 10:13 AM
I'll say. All that really matters is The Bends and OK Computer. Everything else is filler. Oh, and Vampire Weekend sucks.
Posted by Anonymous | September 26, 2008 10:14 AM
In Rainbows is filler? How so? Explain...

""INCOMING MESSAGE STOP RADIOHEAD WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS BACKLASH STOP BEEP BEEP BEEP BOOP BLIP BLIP BOOP BEEP SEE AREN'T WE GENIUSES STOP""
I wouldn't be surprised if that post was directly from the radiohead org.
Stop talking to us like we're retarded!
Willie=rules.
Radiohead=overrated rubbish

Amen to that!

Again, thank you, thank you. Wish I could have been there.

Wow... do we really need to make music preferences such a divisive topic? For any true music fan to argue the artistic merit of Willie Nelson vs. Radiohead seems ridiculous. Both amazing artists who continue to give us great music and great shows.

I love Willie Nelson and have seen him in concert many times. However, I was extremely disappointed with last night's performance. He was unable to reach the high notes on almost all of his songs (instead talking through the lyrics when the song required him to belt out a high note). For the first hour his tempo was off to the point that it sounded like someone else was covering these songs as opposed to Willie. Regarding the tempo issue, his band struggled to keep up and at times it sounded like they were way behind Willie. He raced through "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" and talked the lyrics at the most beautiful parts of the song - ditto for "Angels Flying to Close to the Ground" and "Always on My Mind". I took my 20 year old son to see Willie for the first time and sent him a few MP3s this morning to let him hear how the songs used to be sung. So, anyone who thought Willie was on his game last night were not at Radio City Music Hall.
On a positive note, Willie's guitar playing was very sharp.
My take is that Willie was way too medicated when he came out on stage as his vocals, tempo and general performance seemed to improve towards the end of the show. But, even then, he was not the old Willie I am used to seeing.
At 75 years of age, maybe this is the best Willie can do.

I actually enjoyed much of the show for what it was, but i have to agree that especially early in the night, there were some weird issues with tempo and the band not coming together at all. i actually felt that it started when the drummers switched and Paul took over. i felt like there were two different songs playing at one point. I feel as though he pulled through it after a few songs and things sounded much nicer later. I wished i could have seen him earlier on in his career. I was hoping it would at least have the feel of the band on the Teatro album or something. On some of the songs he was doing weird things with his vocal timing. It kind of reminded me of what Bob Dylan does live - tossing things around. There were definitely enough moments that made me glad to have gone.

I took my mother to see Willie. She hadn't seen him live in over 20 years. She loved it. (Hell, she even knew who Norah Jones was!) There were some tempo / sound issues for the first few songs but then all was well. (Would have liked the bass to be a bit louder) I am not a huge Willie fan but I have enormous respect for the guy. Sure, some of the notes were out of his range but his guitar playing was incredible (His playing always reminded me of Django's style just a bit more loose and sloopy). The audience was a nice mix of young and old, hippies, bad ass winos and obnoxious f**kheads. Jakob was entertaining but the dude needs to learn some more guitar chords and mix the tempo up a bit. Of course mom's excitment didn't last. After the show in the rain, some idiot called my handicapped mother an a**hole and stole her cab. I pray the dude got into a firey crash on the LI expressway and died a horrible death.

The odd thing was that he still CAN hit the high notes (as he demonstrated throughout, but especially in the second half of the concert) - it was hitting them rapidly and repetitively that was seemingly an issue (especially at the beginning; I like the overmedicated theory). The man still has it with the guitar. I think there's also some of the mixing it up/I've been playing these songs for decades thing going on as well (even if we prefer his original arrangement). I hope I'm doing as well at 75 - it's a pretty rare concert where the band does a 35-song/1h45 set. Which is why we should appreciate Willie and Radiohead...
It was definitely a special night. I'm glad my five-year-old got to experience Willie!
Thanks for the filling the holes in my setlist. The range of WIllie's work is astounding, especially when you consider the number of his great songs he didn't sing, and I loved his further expansion to include Hank Williams, Django Rheinhardt, Me and Bobby McGee, and gospel. The crowd was great, too (if different from a typical concert), as others have noted. Just a fun evening that will be long-remembered.

I think his voice was graveled and great
and think the stylings are due to "I think there's also some of the mixing it up/I've been playing these songs for decades thing"
and his guitar was a little more out in front than usual?
and perfectly sour.brilliant

I was one of the lucky ones to see Willie at Radio City the other night. I could have sat & listened to him forever. I felt like I was at The Grand Old Opry. Get with the program you knucleheads, The man is a true legend!
