Zidane coming to theaters & other MOGWAI news (MP3, tour)

by Black Bubblegum

DOWNLOAD: Mogwai - "The Sun Smells Too Loud" (MP3)

ZidanceZidane: A 21st Century Portrait, the film that Scotland's finest, Mogwai, soundtracked in 2006 will finally be released from October 24-30 in an "exclusive engagement" at both BAMcinématek in Brooklyn and Anthology Film Archives in Manhattan.

Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait is a visionary meditation on French soccer star Zinédine Zidane by internationally acclaimed visual artists Douglas Gordon and Philippe Parreno. Spectacular match footage of the midfielder--captured by 17 cameras supervised by cinematographer Darius Khondji during a Spanish Premier League game between Real Madrid and Villarreal on April 23, 2005--is transformed into an innovative film closer to visual art than sports documentary. The filmmakers set the athlete's reflections in text over 35mm, HD, and TV images, taken from various distances and perspectives, and blend stadium sound with a melancholy score by Scottish band Mogwai. The resulting 90-minute film (the length of a soccer game) is a rigorous experiment with cinematic space and time, and an arresting study of a sports icon.
In case you don't know/don't remember, "sports icon" Zidane is the man who gave "footballer" Marco Materazzi a chest full of skull during the 2006 World Cup.

Mogwai released the soundtrack in 2006 with a couple tracks appearing on the (ugh) Miami Vice soundtrack. Don't let that deter you though... check out a few of those Mogwai tracks streaming at the Zidane website.

In other Mogwai news, the band is now on tour with Fuck Buttons, and will hit both both Terminal 5 (tickets still available) and ATP next week (tickets also available).

"The Sun Smells Too Loud", available for download above, is from Mogwai's upcoming record The Hawk is Howling (out Sept 22 on Matador). It's amazing how a split second head-butt on Materazzi changed his whole reputation. Sad.

Cool movie, especially when screened on two screens with simultaneous footage from different cameras. Unfortunately, the match itself is pretty uneventful, lot of footage of Zizou strolling around, though he does set up a goal with a beautiful assist where he truly embodies the legendary skill and grace his name has come to evoke. There's a corny halftime montage, an attempt at poignancy where it cuts to footage of scenes filmed around the (third) world at the same time the match is being played -- this part achieves about all the profundity of Van Halen's "Right Now" video. Allez les Blues!

Why is there a bald eagle on the cover of an album titled "The Hawk Is Howling"?

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2008 3:42 PM

i just saw them play here in LA on the 9th... what a beautiful show

Posted by Anonymous | September 12, 2008 4:24 PM

Saw this in Boston last year at the ICA. Was really beautiful, but I was up all night before and fell asleep for a minute.

Moral of the story: Definitely check it out but sure you've had a good night's rest.

"It's amazing how a split second head-butt on Materazzi changed his whole reputation. Sad."

not really. he's now viewed more in a human stature. he's flawed just like the next man. he's become a celebrated anti-hero in france.

Web Sheriff,
You can eat my shorts. Why don't you get out of your mom's basement at least once a week and get some air? Maybe when you go back you will notice the putrid smell of your body as well. Seriously - get a life you little dinkleberry. Music belongs to the people.

It isn't as if that red card in the 2006 World Cup final was his first red card or anything. It was just the most notorious. I am still pissed about it but at least I still have my job thanks to Zidane getting me to the final.
