Beck and MGMT played their second of three shows at United Palace Theatre in NYC last night (10/9). Beck's setlist was almost the same as night one. Night three is tonight (10/10). Beck also appeared on Letterman last night. That video is with the United Palace pictures and setlist below...

I read the comments from the Wednesday night show clamouring about his performance, and I anticipate a number of comments on this post lauding the show for being great.

I do not know what to say to anyone that was impressed by that performance. If there has ever been a performance where the guy just completely mailed it in, that was it. The set, with encore, was 1:17. ONE HOUR AND SEVENTEEN MINUTES!!! I know because the big red clock stage left told me so and because I watched it since it was infinitely more interesting than anything taking place on the stage (with the exception of the guitarest, who was kinda cute). He hurried from one song to the next, did not interact with the crowd at all, and truly looked like he did not want to be there. On his last go-around at Hammerstein, when he gets to the point "put your damn hands up" everyone went bezerk and did as they were told. This time around, crickets.

The only way that show was enjoyable was if you have never been to a decent show before and have no frame of reference. It was a fcking train wreck and a total waste of money.

Not every band is My Morning Jacket when it comes to stage energy. I've seen Beck 2x and both times were pretty mellow, little interaction, but fun anyway. I dig the tunes and look forward to having a good time tonight.

i was only slightly disappointed by the 80 minute setlist last night. i've been a beck fan since i was little, know all the words to all the songs, and this was my first time seeing him. he totally killed it. maybe it was better than wednesday's show? the houselights weren't on for 30 minutes last night, unlike what all the haters say about wednesday.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 9:48 AM

He went on at around 915 and finished around 1040. This is a pretty standard Beck set. Every time I've seen him he has played for roughly that amount of time.

Don't like it, don't go. The songs he played and the energy of the band was great and it all sounded solid too.

I can get myself up, I don't need Beck interacting with me to get excited. Who cares if he looks disinterested, you are there for the music chump.

Posted by BonerJam 2008 | October 10, 2008 9:52 AM

there's a huge gap between a band not being MMJ on stage and feeling like the performer doesn't want to be there. i'm ok with the middle but the performer has to meet the audience half way.

Posted by grace6697 | October 10, 2008 9:56 AM

Who is the female guitarist?

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 10:02 AM

He looked fine! Just because he didn't talk doesn't mean he wasn't killing each song you clod.

Posted by Shit all over your face grace | October 10, 2008 10:05 AM

calm down.

Posted by grace6697 | October 10, 2008 10:05 AM

Is this the Purple Hat tour?

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 10:13 AM

i know, right? people, chill, it's just beck, not the Mary Jane Girls!

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 10:14 AM

the new song was pretty fresh.

It looked like the band didnt quite know what was going on.

The Drummer was taking cues from Beck and the keyboard/misc instrument player.

Dont know much more about it other than it ROCKED.... as did the rest of the show!

Posted by Brad | October 10, 2008 10:16 AM

Beck broke your brothers' stereo and told him it was you!

Posted by Steve Polychronopolous | October 10, 2008 10:21 AM

does anyone know if they let you bring little point and shoot cameras inside or will we have to try and sneak it? want to take some pictures of the venue... dont really care to snap any of the show itself.

Posted by dantana | October 10, 2008 10:31 AM

United Palace did not check anyone's bags or anything. Was a friendly staff and the venue was majestic. Yes Majestic.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 10:46 AM

There was absolutely no pad down on me either night. I can't speak for girls though with bags. I wasn't paying attention to whether or not they searched those.

Posted by Roofiemaster69 | October 10, 2008 10:49 AM

if he isn't going to get into it, and would prefer to be mellow, then change your setlist! not so sure that the venue is to blame for the poor sound either. though, i was in the balcony. it was very disappointing that he didn't play one song off mutations - would have preferred he played all of modern guilt, which was the reason i was giving him another chance live. i agree with someone yesterday who said his best show was at the beacon with the flaming lips - it's been boring ever since...

Posted by paperbagwriter | October 10, 2008 11:08 AM

"There was absolutely no pad down on me either night."

I had no trouble sneaking in my bazooka and kilo of cocaine

These kids behind us starting blazing during Beck and security immediately came over.

They just threw the joint on the ground and kicked it away and pretended like nothing happened. The security guards told the kids to come with them. They just kept staring forward at the show at didn't move.

The security guards eventually just gave up and left. Nicely done.

I wanted to go to this so badly, the venue looks amazing and I've never been before. Looking forward to MGMT's Halloween show in Brooklyn.

The chick is so hotttt

Posted by Josh | October 10, 2008 11:56 AM

it cracks me up when people say "don't like it, don't go" or "why complain" or "calm down." Sheepy!

people like to have conversations, even arguments, about music, and sometimes they will utter criticisms, and it is silly to say they shouldn't. PS I didn't go to this because I thought it would be boring and United Palace is a dump and "DOES'NT" is spelled wrong in that photo sorry Rev Ike.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 12:18 PM

I've seen Beck 5 or 6 times, dating back to Odelay days and I must say this was by far the most abysmal show he's ever put on. I think they kind of hit their stride by around the 45-minute mark, maybe around Think I'm In Love, which should be called Think This Is a Lame Song Anyway, but by then I had already endured 45 minutes of what was really just insultingly bad even for anyone who DIDNT see beck with the puppets and the dining room table and the bear costumes, or anytime in the past when it didnt seem like he'd rather be filling out a W2 form. As for the asinine "if you don't like it, dont go" argument, I go because I have expectations, which he has more than fulfilled every time i've seen him before, which makes it especially bad when he so blatently doesnt meet them. Get your old band back Beck. Oh, except for the hot guitarist. She can stay.

Posted by William | October 10, 2008 12:32 PM

The girl guitarist is Jessica Dobson.

To anyone who's going tonight: Keyboard guy (Brian Lebarton) said last night that the setlist will be different tonight. Something to look forward to!

You can get a camera in but security did occasionally interfere with picture-taking. I think you should try not to be too obtrusive about it. They also tried to clear the clogged-up aisles a few times.

Posted by bean | October 10, 2008 12:41 PM

I went last night too. I thought Beck looked sick. He didn't look 100% to me.

I saw Beck with the puppets and he didn't look the same. Last night he looked haggard.

Posted by anonymous | October 10, 2008 12:44 PM

to reiterate something said before, anyone who was impressed or thought it rocked has clearly not attended one of his good shows in the past and, for that matter, has not seen a show that "rocks."

As for the comment that you go for "the music" and not necessarily anything that goes into making it a "performance," stay at home and beat it to your iPod. The sound would be better, you would have saved $50, and you could do something more with your time than stare at a disinterested asshole.

The chick was hot, though.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 12:48 PM

Did anybody go to see MGMT and did they play a full set? (and what time did they go on?) United Palace is a sit down spot so clearly you're not going to get the "energy" that you get at bowery or any other standing room venues (by energy I'm talking about nodding nonchalantly and occasionally leaning over to a friend and saying a pleasant comment about the show. freaking hipsters)

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 1:11 PM

scientology can be draining. literally.

Posted by corey | October 10, 2008 1:18 PM

MGMT 45 min set. Got on 8

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 1:23 PM

All of you negative commenters are now declared SPs of the Church.

Posted by Robert Doosh | October 10, 2008 1:38 PM

It was the fourth time I've seen Beck, and each performance was progressively worse. Last night lacked emotion - it was definitely phoned in.

On the other hand, MGMT was excellent.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 2:57 PM

Go find and download the video of the Beck PBS performance which was the last show of his Odelay tour back in 1996/1997 if you want to see a true showmanship performance.

He is interacting with the audience, dancing around, and absolutely killing it.

Posted by Cock McDick | October 10, 2008 3:19 PM

I enjoyed the show last night and have seen Beck over 30 times starting in 1994. IMO the new material rocked and the new vesion of the old songs were cool.
I think it is stupid people saying that if you like last nights show you don't know what a good show is. That is all subjective. Stop trying to define what is cool.
That said I can't wait for tonights show.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 3:34 PM

No shit it wasn't the Mary Jane Girls! If it was I'd be going to all three nights.

Most of the people that post on this board are young and spoiled. That's the main problem. That is why everyone always complain about the crowds in new york being stiff and not receptive. I am going tonight and the last time I saw him was in coney island w/ belle and sebastian and it was great. A inspired performance, great setlist, it was almost 2 hours as well. It was out doors and the in the dead of summer so that set it up for a good time as well. Sorry for the double post.

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 4:09 PM

if anyone read the beck spin interview, it was obvious he was really exhausted on this tour and he said it will probably be his last tour. so yea, at this point he is just kinda goin through the motions which is too bad but really you gotta give the guy a break.

Go See SEXDRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BABIES

Posted by Anonymous | October 10, 2008 9:26 PM

Yeah the clock was strange, was that to help with video editing later on? I had fun, and that venue is glorious. Please demolish the Hammerstein and use the Palace as inspiration for reconstruction. The Orphans, Missing, Walls trifecta really hit the spot. I expected more out of those movie style spotlights, and if I had the reigns over an entire wall of light that can coincide with actual video then I would take advantage of that. Maybe they're still figuring that part out.

Love that theater.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 11:33 AM

agree w/ Scotty at 9:41. discounting the energy factor and length of showtime: every song sounded the same, instrumentally there was nothing to distinguish nor did any of it cross that line of being better than just good and considering the obvious nature of his musicianship it was an extremely disappointing show overall. just a let down..

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2008 9:35 AM

I've seen Beck about seven times in the last 10 years. The Wednesday night show was the worst I've seen, and last years "puppet" show was only marginally better. I go to shows to have fun, hear some inspiring music, and leave feeling like I didn't get ripped off. 0 for 3 this time. He definitely mailed it in, at least on Wednesday.
