Coldplay

Of all things to do yesterday/Sunday (October 26), the day after he got no sleep for 5 straight CMJ days in a row, Kyle went to NJ to see/shoot Coldplay who were playing their first of two shows in a row at the venue formerly known as Continental Airlines Arena.

Coldplay also performed in NYC during CMJ - a private TV show taping - at Hammerstein Ballroom. Their last, semi-proper NYC show was the free one they did at MSG.

Duffy, who played her own CMJ show at Webster Hall during the week, helped guarantee the show would be even more boring opened for Coldplay last night. More pictures (but none of Duffy) below...

I'll say it first to get it out of the way....

This band fucking blows! They are awful, derivative, stupid, annoying music and they should stop playing anywhere in or around the tri-state area or anywhere in this country. They suck!!!

Not any worse than Dan Deacon.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 3:11 PM

Like Chris Martin said at the Hammerstein Ballroom show (which was a suprizingly good show): "We have no talent..just a lot of money behind us."

Jay Z was sitting 10 feet from me with the beautiful Beyonce.

They cant be so bad, can they?

CommGuru/Sons of the Stage in 2009.

not true. dan deacon is much better than coldplay. but then again, so is dog vomit is better than coldplay, so not saying much for DD.

Why they dress like comrades of some french army from some revolution of yesteryear and play such mellow softcore rock the world will never know..

id like to see lightening bolt dressed like them, not them dressed like that.

Great photos of a great band! I am bummed I am missing these shows but was fortunate to have seen the free MSG show and show in Hartford.

In the last picture, you can see that dude's pubic beard.

Coldplay? Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 3:26 PM

i thought they were pretty good. wasn't a huge fan of their 2nd and 3rd albums, but viva is actually surprisingly good.

I use a lot of Coldplay songs on the mix CDs that I make to seduce 40yo cougar mommies. Works every time.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 3:57 PM

that's an amazing photographer...nice skills.

Posted by jess | October 27, 2008 3:58 PM

that SNL performance was a stinker.

"I use a lot of Coldplay songs on the mix CDs that I make to seduce 40yo cougar mommies. Works every time."

Regardless of what you think of them, it is true they will get you laid.

You know how I know you're gay?

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 4:33 PM

coldplay's performance on snl was the 3rd funniest skit of the night - 2nd being the holiday inn express commercial...

I love how Coldplay isn't even the biggest band in the UK yet play giant venues in the US. I goes to show soccer and hockey moms love Coldplay. Let's see Coldplay do what Oasis just did last Saturday. Sell over 650,000 tickets to 10 stadium venues in under 2 hours.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 4:40 PM

Very true. Oasis and Radiohead tower over Coldplay in album and tickets sales throughout the UK and Europe. It is also strange how the Kings of Leon have a very limited amount of popularity in the US yet are massive stars in England. Weird.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 5:03 PM

The reason why Coldplay is big here is because we think they are the quintessential British rockers which some equate with cool and the reason why Kings of Leon are big over in England is because they all think Kings of Leon represent the quintessential American rockers.

Meanwhile I am left in the middle of the ocean attached to this damn buoy listening to Lindsey Buckinham's new album.

this shot is just awesome.

well done kyle.

Coldplay is not a great band by any means, but they sure make better music than the crap Oasis has been putting out for the last decade. They are also better than at least half of the bands you have seen at CMJ.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 6:16 PM

great photos Kyle!!

Is it worth the aggravation
To find yourself a job when there's nothing worth working for?
It's a crazy situation
But all I need are cigarettes and alcohol!

The top 5 Oasis songs smoke the top 5 Coldplay songs.

Oasis: Live Forever, Slide Away, The Masterplan, Don't Look Back In Anger & Wonderwall.

Coldplay: Yellow, The Scientist, Clocks, In My Place, Talk

O A S I S > coldplay

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 6:30 PM

The setlist was mainly composed of Viva la vida songs, some older stuff but mostly singles. It was a good show by all means, but very staged like their last tour, and those comments like "we are from a place nobody knows" or "thank you for giving us a job" just ruined it. Overall a good time, and nice crowd too

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 6:31 PM

Pulp, Suede, Ride, Heavy Stereo and Swervedrive are all better than coldgay.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 6:32 PM

Chris Martin dances around like a muppet in that stupid iPod commercial. This band was great back in summer of 2002 but have since seriously lost the plot.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 6:35 PM

ok great photos kyle but colplay really? they aren't horrible but not too inspiring..it's like radiohead for parents and tweens.

Posted by Dooder City | October 27, 2008 6:48 PM

Hey Coldplay! the French revolution called... they want their clothes back.

Posted by Anonymous | October 27, 2008 10:27 PM

dan deacon is not similar to cold play. what the hell?

if you like coldplay, they probably sound good live. they're just kind of boring adult contemporary.

Posted by cccccccccccc | October 28, 2008 5:04 AM

i like the photos :)

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2008 5:26 AM

stupidest looking guitars ever

nice to see Ryan complimenting kyle.

"Chris Martin dances around like a muppet in that stupid iPod commercial. This band was great back in summer of 2002 but have since seriously lost the plot."

agreed...peaked in 2001/02...

and that one photo that everyone loved(http://www.brooklynvegan.com/img/music/coldplay/izod/22.jpg)? while it is a great photo, i thought the exact same thing when i saw it - muppet.

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2008 8:19 AM

I am big fan of Coldplay but I agree with those who say that Oasis are better. Both are great though and deserving of their stature and the size of the venues they play.

This will be a great 12 months of shows as we have seen REM and Coldplay tour with Oasis coming in December and eventually the greatest of them all, U2 in 2009!

Posted by Loop | October 28, 2008 8:20 AM

ps - people really still talk about oasis?

Posted by Anonymous | October 28, 2008 8:20 AM

these dudes look like futuristic homeless people.

"ps - people really still talk about oasis?"

It's only one guy, but he answers to himself...
