Music for Democracy, a progressive, grassroots coalition of musicians, political activists and music fans united by the conviction that America needs a new kind of politics to move forward, will launch its Get Out the Vote initiative, Be the Change, this Sunday, October 12th in New York City with a fundraising event featuring special guests Vampire Weekend, David Crosby & Graham Nash and Dan Reed.
The night will kick off with an exclusive reception for sponsors and VIP donors, followed by intimate, short acoustic sets by the artists for all Music for Democracy (MFD) supporters. The launch will also feature a panel discussion with Q&A on music and political activism with Air Americas David Bender, Democracy for Americas Jim Dean and others.
This private event will take place at the elegant St. Raphaels Cathedral. General admission tickets are available with a $100 donation. VIP donor tickets available for $500 and sponsor-level donor tickets for $1,000. In addition, a limited number of $50 general admission tickets will be available. All proceeds go to Music for Democracys Be the Change Get Out The Vote campaign.
Be the Change is a multi-tiered campaign that promises to target the youth vote in an unprecedented way. By leveraging the power of music communities online, Music for Democracy has the potential to engage thousands of young voters, increasing youth voter turnout this November in support of Sen. Barack Obama.
This Get Out The Vote campaign has the capacity to revolutionize the power of artists to make a quantifiable impact on the outcome of the elections, harnessing technology and culture in ways that will be key in this new age of wired political participation, said Bear Kittay, national director of Music for Democracy. Were thrilled to have Vampire Weekend support our program to help elect Barack Obama in November."

seriously... the crappy half of csn&y and vampire weekend? I'd rather just buy some obama t-shirts.

2:01 a.m. works at American Apparel, hails from Florida, and his parents pay his rent.

Subject tends to starve himself and ingest a cornucopia of amphetamines in an effort to appear 'hip,' and generally listens remixes only.

He has nothing but scorn for Vampire Weekend because they dress preppy and attended Columbia University, while subject attended a shitty design college and is thus stuck sassing NYU/Columbia students at AA in retail hell.

Ironically, subject's parents dress the same way as Vampire Weekend, eschewing restricting jeans and flannel for Polo and khaki shorts, although subject hates his parents, so perhaps... not so ironic.

^ hahahahaha

i don't know what experience you've had with reality, 3:51, but that definitely describes every vampire weekend fan i've met more aptly than it does people who dislike them.

no wait, you're right-- i'm sure nyu and columbia students pay their own twelve-grand-a-year rents. i'm sure all, or even most of them, come from new york.

i'm sure they have no need for rich parents because they are such talented nietzschean ubermensch, as evidenced by the fact that they are paying a total of fifty grand a year for a great education, in a climate in which a B.A. means nothing regardless of where you get it from.

give me a fucking break.

pathetic

Posted by danidin | October 11, 2008 2:38 AM

9:15 -- NYU and Columbia students do tend to pay their own rent AFTER they've graduated college, unlike all the hipsters in Williamsburg who attended design schools. You see, people who graduate from NYU and Columbia tend to get better jobs, and don't tend to work menial retail jobs.

Ubermensch? I'd consider hipsters to be far better candidates for Ze "ubermensch" than NYU/Columbia grads. Hipsters are snobby, self-important, snide, and are probably more likely to prescribe to the whole 'god is dead' mentality typical of the ubermensch, or even nihilism, since hipsters contribute very little to society other than feeding America's obsession with the banal... like fashion trends. And seriously... you're quoting Nietzsche? What a fucking pseudo-intellectual.

pwn.

I can't say the same for Columbia, but NYU is the *model* for exactly the people 3:04 is describing. He/she is drawing a false dichotomy.

Oh, and a lot of them work at Whole Foods and intern at fashion magazines too. Yes, even after they graduate.

Just want to point out that VW and Crosby/Nash played this exact song together at the benefit.

Look for MGMT to cover Donovan at upcoming tour dates.
