Dosh, the Notwist w/ wii controllers @ Webster Hall - pics

Photos by Tim Griffin

The Notwist

"Last night the German band The Notwist played a beautiful show at Webster Hall. Their changes in music genres (they used to play quite energetic cross-over guitar music back in the 90s, which I distinctly remember listening to back then at my dreadlocked friends' basement apartment in Hamburg's Königsbergerstrasse - while now they are more closely associated with moodier electronic compositions), their unique mixing of instrumentation and style and their sense of innovation was captured perfectly in a moment when programmer Martin Gretschmann was "playing" his sequencers with wii remotes while singer/guitarist Markus Archer was spinning an actual vinyl record with his guitar hanging around his neck. All the while the rest of the full band, including a drummer with a standard drumset, played on." [Good Hard Working People]
Dosh opened the show (Oct 13, 2008). More dates HERE. More pictures below...

They were great. Lots of dancy stuff, some spacey stuff, some complete noise riots -- sometimes all three styles at once. Also an impressive epileptic inducing light show. I think the vinyl that Markus Archer was manipulating onstage was a Notwist record!

wii controllers? huh?

That show was stunning in its excellence and how the energy in the room just got more and more profound as they continued to play.

And yeah, the lanky guy in glasses was intermittently using Wii controllers to trigger samples and change the settings on various effects.

They're from Germany.

Off of Neon Golden, they played Pilot, Pick Up the Phone, This Room, One With the Freaks, Neon Golden and Consequence.

Don't know the new record too well, but seemed like they played most of it.

Record he was spinning seemed to be the vocal track from Pilot. They did a lot of song-into-song transitional stuff; after they finished This Room you could hear bits and pieces of the Pilot vocals from the vinyl, after which they launched into the song. Good show. Way more energetic than I expected.

don't remember the order of songs, but here is what i remember:

Puzzle (from 12)
Shrink, Chemicals (from Shrink)
Pilot, Pick Up the Phone, This Room, One With the Freaks, Neon Golden and Consequence (From Neon Golden)
Good Lies, Where In This World, Gloomy Planets, The Devil You and Me, Gravity, Gone Gone Gone (from The Devil You and Me)

there were a few more, but i don't remember.

amazing show. love the way they translated some older songs live.

The show was sick...saw these guys at the Bowery a while back and they continue to get better.

They opened with Boneless...
