Emmy the Great & the Sammies @ MHOW (BV CMJ) - pics

the sammies

Thanks all for a great night. I'm really sorry if anyone was disappointed at all, especially in the "singing DJ" Jens Lekman. I do admit that during Jens' set I thought, "why won't he sing more!?", but then that was neutralized by watching the entire Music Hall room, still full at 12:30am, dancing to his fairly well-mixed picks that included Mariah Carey's "Fantasy". Jens opened by singing a song, DJ'd and danced around, and then made up for the lack of singing by closing with a few of his hits (that he sang). All in all I loved it considering he was just one of the seven, very diverse bands on the bill... and it was Jens!
Thanks, for Emmy the Great, to everyone who showed up early to see her. She played a great set, with full band, to a decent-sized crowd for the beginning of a 6 hour show at 7pm. Happy hour was in effect (sorry if anybody was told otherwise by some security who didn't realize it due to the strange CMJ schedule). CMJ was already off to a good start. Emmy has six more NYC shows while she's here from the UK.
The Sammies came up next and they were the most WTF choice on the bill (at least that's what I gathered from the look people gave me whenever I brought them up). I wish they were playing more than one show while they were here, but they literally drove up from North Carolina to Brooklyn yesterday and were driving right back this morning. To quote Bill (who hasn't listened to their new album) (like I have many times), "they were fun and unpretentious and offered a constant stream of photo-ops".

I started feeling a little disappointed halfway through Jen's DJ set but then I looked around and the whole place was dancing and going off. It was great to hear his mix, really fun. I want him to DJ more parties!

I'd take her out for sliders and skittles.

i really enjoyed jens' set. it was exactly as it was billed. he dj'ed and sang. and the people there really seemed to be into his DJ'ing. everyone was dancing and smiling. it seemed like he planned to do more of his "hits" at the end of the set but it felt like he may have DJ'ed over his allotted time slot and had to cut it short. all in all it was a really fun and diverse show. great work BV. also, those portrait shots are great. now bring on the shearwater and passion pit photos.

It would have been fine if the show had been billed as "Jens Lekman DJ Set". I would have stayed home and saved my $15. But, it was billed as Singing DJ. And singing during 2 songs doesn't cut it. At one point he started playing Mariah Carey. Give me a break! I kept hoping that it was an elaborate joke. I still think that it might have been. That Jens wanted to see how far he could push it, how much he could con the crowd into buying it.
I want my money back!

As a relocated southerner I enjoyed the set by the Sammies. I told one of them afterwards that they stuck out like a sore thumb, and they said that they were going to bring a keyboard on and lap steel, but there wasn't enough room on stage and they didn't get a chance to soundcheck. Perhaps if they played some mellow tunes my new Yankee friends might have understood them a little more. I was kind of discouraged by how many times I heard the word redneck to describe the band. Like being at a Palin-McCain rally in reverse
