Glasvegas

SCOTS band Glasvegas missed out on the prizes at the Q Awards today in London today.

The Glasgow band were up for best breakthrough act but lost out to The Last Shadow Puppets, the side project band of Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys and Miles Kane of The Rascals.

Welsh songstress Duffy took the best breakthrough artist gong at the awards which were held at London's Grosvenor Hotel ay lunchtime.

Welsh chanteuse Duffy, 24, was kicked out of her school choir at the age of seven but is now compared to Dusty Springfield.

Vampire Weekend took first place in the best video category with their promo for A-Punk ahead of entries from Coldplay and Hot Chip. [Daily Record]

Saturday night October 4th, a heavy night of NYC concerts (Brooklyn resident Kyle made it there after being in Harlem for Jenny) concluded with Glasvegas at Mercury Lounge - a show that almost didn't happen. After an opening set by the lovely Angela McCluskey (whose good friend Craig was also playing a show in the same borough), the band went on about 20 minutes after midnight and played to a capacity crowd at the intimate club. It was part of Glasvegas's first U.S. visit, and it was their second NYC show in less than a week. The first was an opening spot for Echo & The Bunnymen at Radio City Music Hall. boy, alan mcgee keeps shoveling that shit..you keep eating it up! he hasn't found a good band since the early 90s

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:18 PM

I agree. This is the worst "mcghee" band ever. The singer needs to work on his act and the drummer's hopeless. White people all over the country will love this crappy band.

Posted by Tim | October 6, 2008 12:21 PM

I didnt think they were awful. The drummers an annoying frump, but I was into the guitars.

Question- Why was the singer playing a Jay Mascis signature guitar??? Their music has nothing to do with DinoJr.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:23 PM

dude has gotta lose the sunglasses....

Posted by evenmeout | October 6, 2008 12:25 PM

Agree. Loose the drummer, and drop the 'Strummer' look. McGee was right about Oasis. These dudes don't cut it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:25 PM

Alan Mcgee has disconnected himself from Glasvegas. Dont blame the man if you dont like the music. He has suggested 100 bands in the past 10 years. All of them cant be great. That is the business, and probably why he separated from Glasvegas a long time ago.

I thought the show was weak. They could use a better rhythm section. The singer is ok. I also noticed the Jay Mascis guitar! Whats up with that??

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:28 PM

He found Oasis??? Hope he saved his Oasis royalties...looks like another career on the downfall for Mcgee!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:30 PM

That drummer needs lessons to get to play like Moe Tucker! The Glasvegas album is digitally fixed in protools to sounds like a better band than they are. This is what let me down about the show. They'd be really great with a decent drummer. Is Tony Mccarroll available?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:33 PM

Alan Mcgee knows stupid people will eat this shit up! He probably had something to do with the White Stripes success. But the Stripes turned out to be am awesome band. Glasvegas just sucked.

Glasvegas? No thanks...NEXT!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:35 PM

ALL HYPE. NO TALENT. BAD DRUMMER!

Can we get back to discussing Radiohead?

Posted by Loop | October 6, 2008 12:37 PM

Enough with the gimmicks! That band was so bad, I'm thinking about revisiting the Vampire Weekend record! lol!

Posted by hipsterfromdowntown | October 6, 2008 12:43 PM

They had an off show, but I like their record.

Thank You for the photos BV!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:45 PM

They were off at Radio City too so I guess it is not an one off occassion. Their live act doesn't cut it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:50 PM

"White people all over the country will love this crappy band."

Uh huh. Nothing like injecting race into a subject that doesn't require it. Thanks, McCain.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:50 PM

i saw them with echo and bunnymen and they were very good. must have been an off show. granted, the drummer ain't all that but the sound is refreshing and lyrics are good.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:52 PM

Where does it say Alan Mcgee works with this band? I find that hard to believe. He has ears. Namedropping will get this band nowhere! Not with that drummer!

Posted by Mira | October 6, 2008 12:53 PM

One of the best compliments a band can get is getting thrashed by the idiots here who wait by their computers for new posts so that they can say shit about new bands with success. Keep it up losers!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:58 PM

I saw them both nights. The Echo show was MUCH better. The sound is obviously WAY better at radio city than mercury lounge. It still didn't help the fact that their drummer is talentless and only hurts their live performance. If you liked the show, you're probably in a crappy band like them and dont know any better!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:00 PM

I think the singer is cute. Take off your sunglasses so we can see your eyes.

Lose the drummer and I think theyll be bigger than Britney!

Posted by Diane | October 6, 2008 1:04 PM

aside from the drummer, what is wrong with this band?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:07 PM

Anon 12;58 is obviously affiliated with the band, or he/she plays in a bad one. lol!

I dont believe Alan Mcgee has anything to do with this band. There is no proof online. I dont believe hes in for gimmix and money. And this band IS BAD. BAD BAD BAD.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:07 PM

Anon 1:07-

Aside from the drummer, I really like this band! But as you all remember, Oasis had many bad drummers before they were a success. It took ALan White to make it happen!

Get Whitey in, Glas! You're a shoe-in for stardom...

Posted by Sheila M | October 6, 2008 1:10 PM

"Lose the drummer and I think theyll be bigger than Britney!"

LOL!!!

She was ok. Shes a one trick pony drummer. Too bad the trick sucks, and she's not a pony.

Posted by Paul R | October 6, 2008 1:19 PM

this is a good band - get over yourselves hipsters

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:19 PM

Alan mcgee DOES NOT work with or manage this band in any way. He simply blogged on how much he likes them... about 2 years ago.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:21 PM

I saw the midget from Time Bandits in the audience, but he walked out 2 songs into the set. I didnt see any other celebrities. The show was ok. One trick pony? Glasvegas is a one trick pony band! Who did you think you were going to see? Radiohead??? Oasis??? Come on, get real!

Posted by I like shorts | October 6, 2008 1:22 PM

"She was ok. Shes a one trick pony drummer. Too bad the trick sucks, and she's not a pony."

I think thats the funniest comment I've ever read on BV! hahaha!

Posted by about a girl | October 6, 2008 1:23 PM

Mcgee blogged about them 2 years ago...2 years before he saw them live, apparently! What a waste of 10 dollars. I couldve bought pizza.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:25 PM

Cannot be more glad hipsters seem to not like them. And everybody who likes a band is associated with them... right. I wish the best for them, but inside I hope they won't get as big here in the U.S. I rather enjoy their future shows without douchebag hipsters and/or frat boys.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:29 PM

Moe Tucker was a good drummer! Stop associating these bad bands with the Velvets. Sucking doesn't make you like the Velvet Underground. Plus, The VU were decades ago, and revolutionary! Glasvegas just sucks, especially that drummer! Lets get real people!

Posted by DaTroof | October 6, 2008 1:32 PM

Boy Band with bad drummer - Fabricated by industy. I don't even understand what he saying/singing. Sounds like he's got marbles in him mouth.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:33 PM

THEY DONT NEED A GOOD DRUMMER WITH ALAN MCGEE MANAGING THEM!

Posted by Pam | October 6, 2008 1:33 PM

I saw Paul Rudd at the show too. Dead cool guy.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:42 PM

Mark Ronson was there as well but no Alan McGee. I think the midget's name is Peter Dinklage.

Glasvegas > Vampire Weekend

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:46 PM

Listen, Alan McGee was a huge deal in music 15-18 years ago. Bands like Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Teenage Fan Club, Oasis and Glasvegas are all great finds by the former founder of Creation Records. He now hates the music business because all they want to do is push hit singles, not albums.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:49 PM

I AM NOT CONNECTED TO THIS BAND IN ANYWAY!

mCGEE>>>

Posted by Mac | October 6, 2008 1:52 PM

Don't forget he also had Primal Scream, Super Furry Animals, Ride and the Boo Radley's under his control. Alan McGee is up there with Tony Wilson as far as influence on an entire generation of UK bands.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:52 PM

BV...please make a separate post dedicated to this comment:
"She was ok. Shes a one trick pony drummer. Too bad the trick sucks, and she's not a pony."

That is the crown jewel of all comments ever posted on this site.

Gun to the head....The Kooks or Glasvegas?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:58 PM

I was bored to tears. The drummer is awful.

Posted by Brianna | October 6, 2008 1:58 PM

I think the only good thing about this band is their name!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:01 PM

McGuee doesn't have anything to do with this band, his son do. Stop talking about him....

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:02 PM

Hey....the show was $10. Grow up hipster trash.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:03 PM

Was Paul Rudd wearing sex panther by any chance?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:05 PM

I saw Paul Rudd and the midget! hehe... they split early. I dont think they enjoyed the show either.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:09 PM

TERRIBLE DRUMMER! LETS GET BACK TO COMMON SENSE! THIS IS A BAD BAND, DONT TAKE THE BAIT FOLKS!

Posted by regular reader | October 6, 2008 2:10 PM

i'm not expecting much from this post especially from people who still love Oasis. How bad can a drummer be? I think all you negative hipsters need to get your sexual frustrations out somewhere else.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:11 PM

Music's good, though not outstanding or original, but lord the lyrics are appalling. Not even trite, it's as if they're trying to write the worst lyrics ever. I can barely get through a song... ridiculous hype...

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:15 PM

Paul Rudd most definitely didn't leave early. Was standing behind him the entire show. The midget did bail early.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:21 PM

"Question- Why was the singer playing a Jay Mascis signature guitar??? Their music has nothing to do with DinoJr."

The bassist had a bass like Geddy Lee's but they don't sound like Rush. And thes microphones were the same as the ones Huey Lewis plays with, but they didn't sound like 80's throw-up music.... I don't understand, I think I'm gonna the buy the Archies' Xmas album, that I do understand.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:22 PM

The highlight for the show in my opinion was the guy at the bar who asked Mark Ronson who has a bigger dick, his sister or him!

Funny stuff!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:23 PM

anybody who dismisses an entire band because of a drummer really needs to revisit their understanding and appreciation of a rock n roll!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:24 PM

Um Pam...

McGee HAS NOTHING TO WITH THEM, you dimwitted fuckstick.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:28 PM

Anon 2:24. If the drummer kills the bands sound then I don't think they do. A drummer can make or break a band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:29 PM

Samantha definitely has the bigger dick.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:32 PM

Rock music is for assholes. Get used to it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:35 PM

Does anybody have a setlist of the show? I felt like they played for under an hour.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:36 PM

Anon 2:29 the drummer's role in this band is relatively small compared to vocals, guitars and bass. this is not a jazz quartet. the drumming is overly simplified just like the velvet underground's drumming was. using the drummer to disqualify this band is lame.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:36 PM

Stop complaining about Glasvegas' drummer, fucking Vampire Weekends doesn't even have a real singer. I refuse to count that idiot as a singer.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:39 PM

This was really funny.....
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Je20qggwKJg

Great song too!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:41 PM

They played from around 12:15 - 1:00 a.m.

Paul Rudd was there, along with Peter Dinklage, Mark Ronson, and the lead singer of The Hives.

The show was excellent, contrary to many of the hipster idiot's on here's assessment of it. Just because it doesn't have electro loops in it and you can't shake your frail bodies doesn't mean it ain't good.

Oh, and McGee discovered Glasvegas, and has NOT distanced himself from the band... Do hipster on this site literally just make shit up to be contrarians?

John Lackey vs. Jon Lester. Let's go Sox!

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 2:58 PM

You have to admit songs like Daddy's Gone and Geraldine are top notch tunes. Why the hate on this band? They don't run their mouths. Very simple rock band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 3:00 PM

I don't understand why hipsters like to hate on bands just for the sake of hating on them. They'll hate on the band or turn a blind eye until said band gains a degree of notoriety, and then they'll acquiesce, e.g. M.I.A. But if said act becomes too popular god forbid, off with their heads.

This is the reason why nobody goes to see indie films like "I'm Not There" or TV shows like "Arrested Development," even though hipsters talk about them incessantly. They are, for the most part, full of shit and make stuff up to be pop-culture relevant, when in reality they are the biggest type of poseur.

Similar to the election. As we learned 4 years ago, hipsters like to talk politics around election time to get brownie points, but when judgment day comes, their dumb asses won't cast a vote.

Just a worthless subset.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 3:07 PM

Hipsters live in Williamsburg, they wear tight black jeans, have messy hair and live off the rent checks mommy and daddy send to them. They contribute nothing to society but offer bad comments about good bands. I bet some even own a guitar, but its mainly in the apartment to look "cool" sitting in the corner.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 3:23 PM

Once Michael Cera gets into Glasvegas, the tide will turn and Glasvegas will be appreciated by these trendy hipsters.

I thought they were great on Saturday night, though the record is pretty samey. Love this line from the NME review:

"The band will remain in New York working on new material for a week before flying directly to Transylvania to commence work on their upcoming Christmas record."

Posted by bill p | October 6, 2008 4:38 PM

Good band. Solid debut. Looking forward to see where they take this....

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 4:57 PM

you can't understand their lyrics because of they're scottish accents. toff.
the show was solid, not spectacular. they honestly need more tunes though. the standouts - flowers & footballs.., geraldine, daddy's gone, go square go - have been bouncing around for well over a year. the 'new' cuts to the album are terrible.

Posted by digsy | October 6, 2008 7:06 PM

Glasvegas fucking rules. Respect.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 8:45 PM

Glasvegas show @ Mercury Lounge was amazing.

For $10, you got to see a Scottish band that performs at huge venues in the UK in a 200-person bar, and they were spot-on.

Hipsters are failures of life that only know good music when other, more networking-savvy hipsters tell them what to listen to.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:19 PM

The guitar in the photos is a Ventures Jazzmaster, not J Mascis....

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:26 PM

"SCOTS band Glasvegas"

They're a Southern Culture on the Skids side project?

Also, LOL at Duffy getting an award.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:29 PM

glasvegas - very good band - get over it d-bags

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 10:55 PM

Glasvegas sucks big time. Their "singer" sounds like he was gargling rum before he started to record the songs.

Never trust the hype after a band that doesn't even have a record out.

All they want it's your money suckas. Glad to see I wasn't over reacting to this band. And apparently they suck even more live. Guess that if you got as much talent as a fly, you can't hide it live, unless you do a Britney and do everything prerecorded.

Posted by dee | October 6, 2008 11:11 PM

the guy who posted at 11:11 PM is an ASSHOLE

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2008 6:52 AM

11:11 PM will masturbate with tears rolling down his face to "Daddy's Gone" when Glasvegas's music appears in "Juno 2: You Betcha!"

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2008 7:02 AM

gayest rock moves ever. your songs need to rock before you do that dumb shit. worst drummer ever. learn to play. this band blows.

Posted by Anonymous | October 8, 2008 9:57 PM

Come on, come on, these twats are SHITE SHITE SHITE. Anyone remember the last great thing, The Arctic Monkeys? Also SHITE SHITE SHITE. Used to be the UK could come up with a few good bands among the dross, but now they just feed us Yanks SHITE SHITE SHITE. The Glassholes are the new king shitemeisters of UK rock. And yes I am a Williamsburg scumsucker, what about it?

Posted by Glassholes | January 5, 2009 11:47 AM

You don't understand them, because of their scottish accents....why should Scottish people sing with an affected American accent that doesn't belong to them?

You don't understand their lyrics because their songs are relevant to scottish culutre. I bet half you yanks didn't even know what a sqaure go even was??? They grew up in the rough east end of Glasgow and they use these experiences to write real songs, none of this shite some bands write about guns and violence when they grew up in a lovely family in a nice part of town.

I saw them last night and they were brilliant. It was packed and the place was jumping. If you don't like a band, you don't like a band...get over it, just don't listen to them again. They'll do alright without you.
