Jay Reatard

"I could give you a million adjectives to describe it, but just 'disappointed' would probably be the most important one," he says over the phone from his home in Memphis during a brief break in an exhaustive tour schedule. "To have it be out of my control and go down the drain that way, it was so frustrating. I just felt like it was completely out of my control. And the whole punching thing is such a miniscule part of why that show didn't continue and people don't really seem to understand that.

"But I don't feel a need to defend myself. It just happened. I didn't feel like the audience was safe and I didn't feel safe. If I'm a pussy for that or I'm not punk rock for that, so be it. I've never claimed to be a long, lost member of the Cro-Mags or anything. It kind of played itself out how it did and it really sucked. I really hope that next time we play that the amount of energy in the audience and the enthusiasm doesn't cross the line into making it impossible to play." [National Post]

Jay Reatard opened the Rhapsody show at MHOW on Thursday so he could make it in time to play Maxwell's later in the night (10/23). Those were two of many shows he went on to play over the course of the CMJ week. More pictures from this Brooklyn one below...

discography that anyone gives a crap about:

blood visions
in the red singles

all else, ignored and rightfully so. especially what he's done since

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 5:22 PM

Just because you didn't know about it because you get all your music from blogs doesn't mean it was ignored.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 5:49 PM

trust me, it was ignored.

and beyond that, dude sucks at life

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 5:54 PM

ive seen jay twice last year at cakeshop and mercury opening for dirtbombs...the first time felt cool, by the dirtbombs show, i was already over it.

ive been half ignoring all the reatard stuff regarding the fights, the singles stuff on matador, etc. i wasnt even interested in seeing him at music hall but figured it couldnt be that bad.

with that said, dude put on a killer show and nicely reinvented himself. you just cannot deny this guy's chops and his music. i was very impressed with the new direction.

He killed it at the Bowery! One of the best shows I've been to in a while.

Posted by rypin1 | October 29, 2008 7:19 PM

So glad the show at Maxwell's was empty! Thank god all you fuckers stayed in brooklyn. The gig at Maxwell's was tight!

I'm pretty sure most of the people saying only Blood Visions and the Matador singles album are good have never heard Teenage Hate. Or Angry Angles. Or Lost Sounds.

Posted by Anonymous | October 30, 2008 2:18 AM

the earlier shit was good but it was also pretty obscure, whereas the post blood visions stuff is just limp and shitty.

also, most of his good shit sounds like pretty much the same song. The best Angry Angles songs sound just like straight garage takes of the good songs on Blood Visions.

here's the formula for a Jay Reatard melody:

da da da da da! duh, duh, duh duh, DUH

staccato then a catchy slower bit, it's the same on all the good ones.

Posted by Anonymous | October 30, 2008 9:56 AM

angry angles/nervous patterns/lost sounds was all killer shit.

jay has been on a roll for like ever now.

i wish more bands would beat the shit out of their fans.

recent stuff blows

Jay gets some of the most narrow-minded feedback on nearly every blog he is mentioned on.
The fan-boys who defend him are people who don't actually know him. The losers who rag on him about being an angry fat lame druggie crybaby are obviously bitter about things Jay has done/said to them. Get over it.
I'm glad to hear he is re-inventing himself on stage, his shows have sorely missed any form of dynamics.
The buzzsaw type of a set gets old if everything is the same tempo.
I look forward to hearing new stuff from this VERY talented kid who is already a legend.

jay reatard is fat boring socially retarded old news

Posted by Anonymous | October 30, 2008 5:22 PM

used to not dig it at all based solely on the reviews and interviews.
gave it another chance and really dig some of it.
i'd rather have a guy who made 3 amazing solid records than 3409238409238423098423 mediocre ones, but so be it. i think he's the good stuff, regardless of his antics or whatevz.

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2008 2:35 PM

his good records are really pretty great.

but he's a fucktard

he also repeats himself musically, kinda one-note

Posted by Anonymous | November 3, 2008 2:40 PM

hi does anyone know where i can download Grown Up, Fucked Up? I've tried all the usual shit megaupload, rapidshare, mediafire etc.
