Jeff Mangum sang NMH's 'Engine' in Pittsburgh (VIDEO)

Jeff Mangum plays in Pittsburgh on October 18, 2008 (Hughshows)
Mangum

Neutral Milk Hotel was performed with Jeff Mangum on vocals last night in Pittsburgh....

Neutral Milk Hotel (Mangum & Koster) - 'Engine', in Pittsburgh,10/18/08

Elephant 6 Holiday Surprise Show at the Brillobox in Pittsburgh on 10/18/08, Jeff Mangum and Julian Koster performed the song Engine in the middle of the room as a finale. I'm pretty sure that this is the first time any form of Neutral Milk Hotel has performed since 1998! [tomfaix]
Here;s a much older video of "Engine" being performed....

Neutral Milk Hotel - Engine (way back when)

Jeff also performed at the NYC and Rochester stops of the Elephant Six Holiday Surprise Tour, but as pointed out above, Pittsburgh is likely the first time Jeff sang on a Neutral Milk Hotel song in a while.

Julian will be performing as The Music Tapes at Mercury Lounge for CMJ.

"phish reunion is way cooler"

The Phish reunion was inevitable; this wasn't, which makes it much, much cooler.

>pizzaburgers

took me a second to figure that one out... very funny !

Yes almost as remarkable as him doing an NMH song was the fact that there were people in the room not even paying attention...

I'd give my left nut to be there !

oh man, why a horrible crowd! Will NMH ever come back for a tour or show?

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2008 5:05 PM

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2008 5:09 PM

NMH is overrated.

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2008 5:55 PM

stop talking!

Posted by Anonymous | October 19, 2008 6:22 PM

the irony is that half the people talking are probably the same people raving at how amazing the performance was.

You people weren't at the show and have no idea what your talking about. Yes, a few people were being loud and annoying and were making it very difficult for us to hear, but we were in a bar, and THEY WERE DRUNK. Don't say you've never been.

The Collective played for nearly 3 HOURS STRAIGHT. The whole place had literally been rockin' the entire night. Throughout the lengthy encore the floor at times felt like it was going to collapse from all of the people jumping. There wasn't even a mention of NMH other than a stirring performance of "The Fool" by Julian Koster and Scott Spillane in the middle of the audience about halfway through the show. Other than that, just music and film from all of the other bands and musicians, and to tell you what, they were having a great time, and so was the crowd. Everyone there could feel it. At one point during the encore Scott Spillane said, and I quote, "I'm going to play all night if you guys want to stay and listen. This is great! I can just feel the love coming from you guys."

At nearly 1:45am after Julian had performed an amazing solo performance of "Manifest Destiny" he looked around trying to find his singing saw that he couldn't find amidst the various crash cymbals, guitars, and banjos that were lying on the floor after a frenzied encore. When he did finally find it he started walking into the middle of the floor and from where I was at I could see Laura Carter and next to her out of seemingly nowhere was Jeff Mangum. That is where your video comes in. After it was over Mr. Mangum disappeared as quickly as he came in, and the show ended with the people that had been listening left stunned by what had just transpired.

DO ALL OF YOU PEOPLE honestly think that Jeff Mangum and NMH would have come out and performed after nearly 10 years of silence if the people they were playing for weren't into the show? I think you can answer that yourselves.

Well, he did play Brillobox in Pittsburgh, a place that can make anyone embarrassed for Pittsburgh. Faux hipsters, crusty idiots with ridiculously bloated egos, people drinking stupid beers just because they need to retain some sort of credibility among their peers. God, I hate that place.

scene creamers

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 9:28 AM

holy FUCK..

that shit sounds a school cafeteria.. what the fuck was going on there? what the hell were those people on about? paid money to go to a show and talk? a show where Jeff Mangum is singing a song?

that video is unbelievable.. i thought you guys meant like a whisper and a sentence aloud here and there but you can hardly hear the guy...

jesus christ....

never seen anything like that before.

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 10:05 AM

most pittsburgh shows i go to, hardly anyone pays attention to the music
it's a drinking town and that's about it

the brillobox is a good bar
just not a good crowd every night

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 10:29 AM

wish I could have been there. my brother went... hes basically still in shock he got to witness this. apparently, this video is a misrepresentation of what the crowd was really like. don't worry, everyone really enjoyed this.

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 11:20 AM

Wait... So, Did Phish play or not?

Posted by FNMH | October 20, 2008 11:41 AM

Sheesh, judging from the comment, even people who were into the show talk too much. Ever read a comments thread on BV before?

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 12:01 PM

Oh Phish, I will be with you when you lose your breath. Chasing the only meaningful memory you thought you had left

in other words it's just like Brooklyn
(except we pay $600 to rent a house instead of a closet)

I remember seeing NMH at the Pontiac Grill in Philly back in the day, amazing show. Sure hope this is a hint at a reunion tour, I'd hit a few for sure.

That video is awful but to be expected, hipsters are hipsters and will talk about how great it was, not about how they were talking about stupid bullshit like their tight $200 jeans or $10 coffee. You'll have them at most shows, being assholes and missing the point of what they're doing there.

But some people there surely enjoyed what the saw, awesome.
