MIA

M.I.A. first appeared on stage at last night's Diesel party during T.I.'s surprise set which was right before Franz Ferdinand played. Then she came back to do her own set which segued right into N.E.R.D.'s short set which closed the whole night Hot Chip played much earlier - only a few of their own songs before they became Chaka Khan's backing band. More pictures of M.I.A. below...

This explains why M.I.A. cancelled her European tour after the McCarren Pool and MoMA shows over the summer. M.I.A. announced her engagement to Benjamin Brewer in May or June.

Lots more from this Brooklyn party (oct 11, 2008) later...

WTF!!!!???? No wonder she retired.

Posted by Antonio | October 12, 2008 3:31 AM

dang. that was quick. i just got home. was really excited about it but it was kinda of a sham. some random "best new band" played first. then hot chip came on only to play 3 songs from their latest album and then was the backing band for chaka khan's 3 songs. i was mad that their set wasn't really a proper minimal 6 -8 songs for this setting. they seemed a little perturbed as well. then a suprise act came on, T.I., not that i cared. he played a good 6 or 7 songs, using the word played very loosely there. on the last song, he had Franz Ferdinand's guitarists backing him which segued to their set of 6 -8 songs. they were honestly the highlight of the show, the only artist to really try and pack in their hits and put full energy into it. then M.I.A. came on (very pregnant) and did 5 songs and N.E.R.D. came on and assisted on her last song "Paper Planes" (which was an obvious crowd fave) and then did a 5 song set that got the crowd really into party mode. you can't really complain b/c it was all free. open bar all night, free hot dogs/cotton candy/popcorn/funnel cakes. it took forever to get a drink but that was expected. but it was a great production. it definitely wasn't half-assed. it was actually a very cool venue for a makeshift site on a pier. the circus acts were cool as a sideshow and i'm happy that they just didn't rent out Terminal 5 or Webster Hall. It was really their thing and as short as the sets were, all the minute collaborations were really cool except the hot chip/chaka khan one. they really got the short end of the stick. all in all, the $50 jeans were pretty crappy (especially for guys and you had to wait way too long to get a ticket (5.5 hours for me) at the store, but the show was fun for what it was. you had to expect it to be a clusterfuck but it was really well organized. the only complaints would be the long waits at the bar and the brief sets by artists that should at least be playing 45 minutes each if not longer. cool venue and great view of manhattan!

Posted by orange z | October 12, 2008 3:35 AM

TI got the crowd so pumped up, especially since he introduced M.I.A to do "swagga like us".
Franz Ferdinand set was soooo long, i mean some people like that. I didn't. The N.E.R.D set was crazy short and bonkers. The guitarist got hit the face with a cushion.

i thot it was funny when she said "I got knocked up on the job"

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 4:54 AM

It was actually a bit of a clusterfuck outside when they stopped letting people in at around 10:30. I feel bad for the people that paid for their ticket and never got to go inside. I guess it's expected when the event is "free".

wow, MIA decided to keep the baby. where Obama at? didn't she know that she had control over her own body and could make her own decisions? I'm personally so sad and disappointed to see MIA is keeping her baby. She was probably pressured by record company execs to keep it, otherwise she would have happily destroyed that precious life inside her. I hope more young women will see this terrible act of generosity and self-sacrifice by MIA as just another example of this male dominated society pressuring archaic laws on its rap happy street folk...

Posted by KeepingtheBaby | October 12, 2008 9:18 AM

M.I.A. was definitely inspired after repeat viewings of "Juno."

i go to a 'big ten' school and it's hilarious how like paper planes is the song this year that is the equivalent here of like what stronger was last year and sexyback was the year before. I was walking to our football game a couple weeks a go and walking by like the douchiest "bro"-est frat on campus and all these dbags and skanks were grinding to paper planes. obviously it's "the song from pineapple express." i feel like it would be hilarious to see m.i.a's reaction to seeing a spectacle like this.

"where's obama at?"

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 11:27 AM

this show was awesome, such a well-done event all around (except for the four bartenders per bar, that shit went so slow... took an hour to get my first and only drink). performers were mostly good (franz did play for a longer time than they should have, chaka khan was amazing, t.i. was t.i., m.i.a. gave yet another disinterested performance, n.e.r.d. were rockin, hot chip were nerdy). terrific times all around, definitely a loss for anyone who wasn't there.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 11:30 AM

This was a fantastic and fun show. The crowd was a crazy mix of fashionistas, gangstas, indietards and circus folk. Not a typical show at all.

Highlights: The marching band, Hot Chip's sound, acrobats, free open bar, the exterior of the enormous tent changing patterns of light, good bathroom situation.

Lowlights: crowded bar, M.I.A.s sound, the balcony getting closed by FDNY, the presence of Joel and Benji Madden.

Celeb sightings: Lindsay Lohan, Juliette Lewis, Marty Markowitz (of course).

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 11:56 AM

I wonder who hit it?

Posted by Regular reader | October 12, 2008 12:00 PM

I'm pissed - waited in line for a ticket for 5 hours, then landed VIP tix from one of the bands, knew the set times so I figured I get there later because I had no desire to see the Madden bros DJ. But then I couldn't get in cus it was at capacity. I had hope that they might let people in but then Pharrell rolled up and tried to get his friend in and the fire marshal wouldn't have it, So I gave up - I mean if Pharrell couldn't get anyone in, no one could.

Diesel could've handled the mess at the door a lot better and should've had a PR rep at the door instead of letting the police deal with it completely. They also shouldn't have given away so many tickets.

I think I'm returning my shitty jeans tomorrow.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 12:02 PM

@KeepingtheBaby,

you are an asshole. being pro-choice doesn't mean you only have a choice to abort a fetus. it means you have the choice to keep it or not.

now, go protest in front of a clinic for fetuses that you will never meet or give a fuck about once they're in the world.

@ 12:02 p.m. Agreed.

I got there around 10 p.m. and the line never moved. Around 11 p.m. the hired security and police started screaming at everyone to vacate the premises. I hung around for a while assuming that they were just trying to thin out the crowd, but I didn't see anyone else get in. Even when people seemed to be leaving the party. That's just bad business. At every event I've ever worked it has been one person out/one person in at the door. It's a bit of a pain, but simply shutting down the door an hour and a half into a party is just asking for a riot - especially when no one from your company has the courtesy to tell the crowd what is going on. Lame.

That MIA's pregnancy is the headline here is indicative of how this blog is forgetting about music and catering to celebrity. In this case, not only is music an afterthought, but you're engaging in the misogynistic notion that a woman's reproductive decisions are important in a discussion of her art. More thoughtful editing is needed here.

Franz were heartstoppingly great; it is a shame this reality flew over the majority of the (admittedly lowbrow) crowd members' heads. FF was wasted on these yobs, but my goodness, they still set even the most jaded of us into a goosestepping frenzy. The new songs were impressive! A slightly untoward climate in which to experience hints of the FF3 album, but color me intrigued. Alex was not in a great mood; he knew that, this time, the crowd wasn't there for him, which was unsettling.

Posted by Alexis | October 12, 2008 8:35 PM

I was also trapped outside even though we had tix... NYC cops/fire Marshall can be really annoying when it comes to these situations. They always shit on something fun or interesting.... I understand crowd control but closing line early was very gestapo... Shame on diesel for not having a single rep at the gate for late comers. I even saw Richie rich waiting outside... What sucked more was how lame all of the random people leaving early were. Most didn't look like peeps that would be into the music... Oh well just goes to show how watered down this city is.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 8:41 PM

If you got there late, you're a complete dumbass and deserved to be shut out of the show.

It started at 9:00, and I got there at 9:30 and walked right in. You should have known judging by the Diesel lines/magnitude of the show/it's freeness to be punctual.

I'm aware that irony and sarcasm are unavoidable (if intensely irritating) parts of modern hipster-ism, but some of these comments are just sexist, racist, and flat-out degrading. Oh, and they're very unfunny too.

"Damn immigrants?" "I'd still hit that?" Come on. Pregnant or not, M.I.A. is an intensely talented and outspoken artist who deserves a hell of a lot more respect than what's being doled to her here.

Small-minded comments like that (whether ironic or not) fly in the face of any self-respecting music scene. Either shape up or shut up.

Why did you wait so long to enter? Was there a knitting lesson at 9 p.m. in the L.E.S.? Idiot.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 11:46 PM

"Pregnant or not, M.I.A. is an intensely talented"
She's the indie Madonna. The "talent" is questionable.

Posted by Anonymous | October 12, 2008 11:48 PM

Madonna never did songs about militant movements in the global south or called for forced redistribution of wealth. And as for anti-sexism, well, I would think that's obvious. 11:48's logic is tenuous at best.

Posted by Anonymous | October 13, 2008 12:03 AM

M.I.A. is awesome and people obviously are interested, otherwise there wouldn't be so many comments. Besides did anybody really expect an entire post about the performance ignoring the fact that she has a mad preggy belly? Crazies.
