Michael Gira @ The Stone, NYC - pics
Photos by Lori Baily

Michael Gira played an intimate and intense solo show at the East Village club The Stone on Tuesday night (September 30). It was the final night of a month of Stone performances that were curated by JG Thirlwell. One of the highlights of the sweaty (it was hot in there) get-together, in addition to the music, was hearing Michael's back-and-forth banter with audience member, and former Swans guitarist, Norman Westberg, as they remembered past gigs together.
More pictures from the show below...

When the packed show ended, Michael received a well deserved standing ovation.
Check the Stone's website for their most current schedule.

"intimate, yet intense" Why yet? Shouldn't intimate shows normally be more of an intense experience?

It felt like such a great honor to be able to cram into that little room and be so close! Thanks so much to the people who let me move around and sit in front of them. I tried to stay out of the way as much as I could.
Gira's solo performances are always stunning. Last time I saw him play he was opening for Shearwater and while I don't mean any offense to them - their music is gorgeous - Gira as one guy with a guitar blew them off the stage despite their harp, piano, projections, etc.
At least the Stone will save on heating bills this winter.

Lori, great pictures! You must have been the person that Gira said WAS allowed to take pix! Agreed, missed the French Institute Shearwater show, but I've seen Gira upstage people with his guitar before. This evening was, with the humidity, tangible and unforgettable.

a LOT of people showed up for this, and a good portion of them were turned away because of capacity issues. this was a real treat.

that looks like it was a really good show. Do you happen to have a setlist, maybe a more descriptive review of the evening? Thanks for sharing the pics, just a bit curious as to what was missed.
