NY Press Music, Best of Voice, Gogol Bordello ACL pics

NY Press Music Issue

If you pay attention to the NYC weekly papers, you probably already noticed that this week offers both The Best of 2008 Voice issue AND the music issue of the NY Press - complete with a big picture of Gogol Bordello on the cover and a list of their choice for the top 20 (NYC?) bands. If you can't pick them up, most or all of the content is available behind those links (thank you to anyone that voted for BV for best blog). And if you count the CMJ/Vivian Girls interview issue of L Magazine, it is a good week for free papers this week.

Speaking of Gogol Bordello, they have a bunch of shows coming up and Kyle the took the below pictures of them at this year's Austin City Limits Festival....

7. Marnie Stern
8. Battles
9. Dirty Projectors
10. El-P
11. Yeasayer

Not quite there yet, the following 19 bands are destined to one day rule the NYC music scene alongside Sonic Youth (who seems eternal in life):
Jealous Girlfriends, So So Glos, These Are Powers, Crystal Stilts, School of Seven Bells, Ford & Fitzroy, Asobi Seksu, Harlem Shakes, Chairlift, Pela, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, O'Death, Free Blood, The Forms, Oakley Hall, Gang Gang Dance, TK Webb, Blood on the Wall, Religious Knives

Does this list imply that Magnetic Fields are worse than Marnie Stern?

i love reading these lists and realizing how far behind the rest of the music continuum publications like NY Press are. Most of these bands are repped by the same publicists and have little or anything relevant going on. The Jealous Girlfriends, Asobi Seksu, Gan Gang Dance, Harlem Shakes, Blood On The Wall? What is this, 2005? So So Glos? I mean, they're ok, but they live at market hotel where like 75% of the band who play there are way better. Again, I am not one to bash on bands, and everyone on this list is respectable, but to say it's myopic would be an understatement.

Danger Mouse?

always right,
I like that you point to Jealous Girlfriends, Gang Gang Dance, Asobi Seksu, Harlem Shakes and Blood on the Wall as being irrelevant. All these bands have either released something this year, or have something on the way. it's not like the Strokes or Bravery made the list. There's an endless supply of great bands in this city, so there's always gonna be someone left unnamed on one of these lists.
