official 2008 BrooklynVegan CMJ showcase announcement
DOWNLOAD: The Sammies - Glisten (MP3)
DOWNLOAD: The Phenomenal Handclap Band - Testimony (MP3)

Tuesday, October 21, 2008. Doors at 6 PM. Show at 7 PM, (18+)BrooklynVegan is finally (well, it's been a while) doing a show in Brooklyn. After a successful try at throwing an official CMJ showcase last year at Bowery Ballroom, I'll be doing it again this year, but this time at Bowery's sister venue Music Hall of Williamsburg. I couldn't be more excited about the lineup. $15 tickets go on sale Tuesday at noon. A limited number of CMJ badgeholders will also be admitted to this show on a first come, first served basis.
the lineup...
* Emmy the Great
* The Sammies
* Secret Guest
* Ponytail
* Passion Pit
* singing DJ Jens Lekman
and a special late-night (midnight) set by:
* The Phenomenal Handclap Band
The Sammies are a North Carolina band whose new album Sandwich became a slight obsession recently. I'm glad I didn't judge the book by its cover and that they said yes to coming up and playing the show.
Emmy the Great is coming all the way from the UK, and bravely, like Bon Iver before her, holds the opening slot on the seven-artist bill. Stay late. Show up early. We'll have drink specials (TBA).
More about the artists on this bill as the show gets closer. In the meantime, check out the video Joly took at the recent Phenomenal Handclap Band show at Tribeca Grand, below...

P.S. Also, stay tuned for other less-'official' party announcements.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2008 6:47 PM
Dan Deacon would be fitting, for all the angry blog posts that have been contributed in his name.

It's a field recording. The birds and ambient noise help make the music. Pls come and see it out of doors.

Just saw The Sammies. Great show. Don't miss them.
Posted by anonymous | October 4, 2008 9:16 PM
Decent lineup, but it pales in comparison to last year.
This year:
Emmy the Great
The Sammies
Secret Guest
Ponytail
Passion Pit
singing DJ Jens Lekman
and a special late-night (midnight) set by:
The Phenomenal Handclap Band
Last year:
The Rosebuds
Dean & Britta
The Most Serene Republic
Miracle Fortress
The Shaky Hands
Bon Iver
Not even close to last year, IMHO. Plus last year was in Manhattan, no need to venture into Williamsburg. The free days have always been better anyways.

thanks

Sammies album is unbelievable.
Posted by Diggedy | October 9, 2008 5:18 PM
Tuesdays line up is weird at Mercury for CMJ, but, Thing-One is a solid band who I caught last month at Mercury for their unoffical "we're not signed" album release show, my friend from Jersey dragged me to it, which I'm happy he did, I think the albums called "You'll be Fine" and I recently heard them on WOXY and FUV.

"the Secret Guest is A Place To Bury Strangers"
wrong
Posted by brooklynvegan | October 20, 2008 2:57 PM
I'd guess the secret guest is Cloud Cult or Land Of Talk, just judging from BV's taste, but who knows? Well, SOMEONE knows.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 3:04 PM
My friend, Nic Basque, from the band Plants And Animals said they are gonna be playing the Brooklyn Vegan showcase.
Posted by kv | October 20, 2008 3:16 PM
i am dying to find out the special guest - i am trying to persuade some friends to stop being lazy and come, so i am hoping the secret will be enough to get them out!

If Shearwater, Passion Pit, Ponytail and Jens Lekman aren't enough to pursuade your friend to come to the show, you need new friends.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 11:22 PM
i completely agree

"I'd guess the secret guest is Cloud Cult or Land Of Talk, just judging from BV's taste, but who knows? Well, SOMEONE knows."
those are good guesses. Land of Talk was actually scheduled for the Thursday day party, but Lizzie is having vocal chord problems and decided it's best not to do any more shows than the ones opening with Broken Social Scene.
