Pelican

While on their European (mega)tour with Torche, Pelican hit a bit of a snag....

Two days ago we had a spare half hour to spend in Rome before heading to the venue, so we decided to go see the Coliseum. We parked nearby and went to take a brief twenty minute walk around the area. When we returned to our van we found that it had been broken into, despite being parked on a major street in broad daylight. Four bags were stolen, the contents including computers, passports, wallets, ipods, our soundguy's microphone collection, and, most devastatingly, a number of personal journals and two portable recording devices containing hours of song ideas that are now lost forever.
The band has set up a paypal account at pelicanrobbed@gmail.com to try and recoup some of those costs (microphone collection... yikes), but those recording devices... ouch.

Pelican's North American 'Champions Of Sound' tour with Kayo Dot & Stove Bredsky kicks off in Mt. Clemens at the end of October.

when will bands learn?
don't leave your shit unattended!

"Passport, tickets, money."

Dear Pelican,

The mantra you see written above is one that my dad used to say whenever we would travel abroad. It was 100% foolish of you to leave your money and passports in the van. Microphones, ipods and other electronic equipment can be quickly and easily replaced, but passports, driver's permits and other government issued documents are another story.

To all the bands out there touring the world: stop leaving your papers in the van. People aren't kidding when they say a US passport is worth its weight in gold.

its the part about the paypal account I don't get -

Posted by jim | October 6, 2008 11:29 AM

yeah, i when i lose shit/have stuff stolen i don't expect/beg people to pay for my stupidity.
you are traveling the damn world.
grow up

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 11:36 AM

my passport is worth it's weight in chicken

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 11:37 AM

God damn Mussolini loving bastards. I agree with the above comments, it's common sense to keep the super important stuff (money, passports) on your person at all times, that's hostel living 101.

Could somebody please tell me what an instrumental band needs with a microphone collection on tour?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 11:44 AM

fuck these guys for thinking that people might wanna donate money for a incident cause by pure stupidity. a car accident/death is understood...but foolishly leaving yr shit unattended in a van in ROME?! of all places. shame on you. break up while you're at it.

To anon 11:44 For mic'ing drums, amps, etc.

Posted by BBG | October 6, 2008 12:07 PM

hi guys, i'm fairly unintelligent. are any of you willing to give me money?

Posted by Broseph | October 6, 2008 12:45 PM

what is wrong with people today? people need to learn how to respect other people's shit... fucking wrong man

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:51 PM

i love when bands post this stuff online, as if they just got cancer and need money to cover bills.

give me a break, you act stupid and/or don't have insurance... you probably shouldn't go asking for a hand out. suck it up. go get a credit card and go buy some new stuff. otherwise, you're embarrassing yourself.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 12:51 PM

Fan of Pelican... but a Paypal account to help them out with this? You have to be fucking kidding me.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 1:31 PM

the dong on the left is pure comedy.

Rome near the Colosseum is a total slum-- everybody knows you don't keep your wallet or passport in your back pocket, much less a parked van. Sad.

These people are pals with enough well off musicians at this point to ASK THEM to help out. By personal emails, in private, make a phone call. This habit of brazenly setting up online accounts "we got robbed here's paypal send us $" is really irritating. Ask your fucking other musician friends, especially ask the ones claiming they are broke, they got secret accounts, trust. Of all your scene friends, I'm sure you know someone who knows Chris Martin or Jack White.

A few years back I saw Pelican at the Limelight. They cut their set short due to technical difficulties. In this case I was "robbed" of a full set. Pelican never Paypal'd me. :(

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 3:11 PM

Hey Beavis, Pelican is weak...

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 3:49 PM

Too bad they didn't steal the fucking drummer, too.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 5:20 PM

im not a fan of Pelican.
but damn that sucks.
but i agree, why leave all that important stuff so unattended??
locks!

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2008 1:23 PM

Bummer, didn't that happen to Sonic Youth and The Raveonettes?

Posted by bossofcobb | October 7, 2008 4:17 PM

there are seriously way to many assholes that visit this site to count.

Posted by Anonymous | October 8, 2008 2:08 PM

I know right. these douchebags have not a single ounce of empathy in their bodies. all of their personal journals and song ideas were stolen!!!! do you know how bad that sucks??? jesus fucking christ.

and to the idiot who said "locks!" yeah, dumbass I'm pretty sure they locked the van. someone BROKE IN idiot.

Pelican donates money to people with...as you say..."just got cancer and need money to cover bills" and "we got robbed here's paypal send us $"..as well as keeps there merch prices low for everyone else. If you don't want to help out, don't. What is the big deal? Why trash talk? Some of you sound so hostile about it.

"People aren't kidding when they say a US passport is worth its weight in gold." -they didn't have any problem getting their passports back or canceling any credit cards. Also, you know you get pick pocketed and bags stolen off your shoulder there. They are going to get your stuff no matter where you leave it.

"Ask your fucking other musician friends, especially ask the ones claiming they are broke, they got secret accounts, trust." -okay, fucking laugh riot. You have no idea what you are talking about.

"break up while you're at it." -cool dude, pure example if this aggro talk. Just don't listen to them if you don't like them. Why hate music?

"there are seriously way to many assholes that visit this site to count." I fully agree. If I had a paypal account I WOULD donate a few bucks but I cannot have paypal in my shitty country. Pelican is a great band (even though the drummer really sucks, but I hope he will practice and improve his drumming skills so the next album will be perfect). \m/ Pelican!
