Phish

As many have informed me (thanks all!) (you hippies!) (just kidding!), Phish is back and they have three shows coming up in Virginia. Tickets are already on presale. If you don't want to go to Virginia, "the band intends to announce additional touring in 2009 early next year." If you miss the presale, "tickets go on sale to the public on Saturday, October 18th at 10 AM EST and may be purchased online at Ticketmaster."

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 10:29 AM

Fuck all you sarcastic fucks! This band has meant more to a lot of us than anything you have ever listened to. Yeah, the music can be full of holes and yeah they can play a bad show, but this is still one of the best and most important bands of the last 50 years. Many of us are ecstatic right now and with good reason! Woooooohooooo!

Enjoy Dan Deacon and Black Kids and Passion Pit and whoever else. I'll be shaking my balding dreadlocks in Virginia come march!

I hope everyone takes notice:

Being the new post-hipster chilled-out-back-to-roots-nature-dude is so going to be next season chic.

Get it?

Buy tickets. Learn the music. It's the next cool. Williamsburg is all ready making strides.

Hurry up Toronto.

You've been warned.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:04 AM

Yeah... we all know the hipster is dead. So we gotta go somewhere. All the good hipster music is getting hippie'd out anyway.

Someone needs to create a hipster guided Phish playlist for the young ones just like PC->Mac transitions guide they needed to become Mac cool.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:10 AM

i am glad to see the hater comments on here....cuzz that means i will finally not have to see the hipster fucks at these shows with your arms crossed.

now i can be surrounded with some passionate music lovers....regardless if they're strung out or not.

Posted by anon | October 1, 2008 11:12 AM

Guess what people, PHISH SUCKS!!! every watching them will be high anyway, so whats to enjoy?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:13 AM

um being high is awesome, dumbass

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:22 AM

The masses of us need not worry. The lame MIA hipster shits won't realize till tours over that they missed the next cool. But there is definitely a strong legion of mature urban music loving "hipster looking" folk that will be loving the phish shows and rockin out with all you crazy hippies! Im one of em and cant fucking wait!!

Being the new post-hipster chilled-out-back-to-roots-nature-dude is so going to be next season chic.

Um, Fleet Foxes?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:25 AM

I am going to scalp the shit of out these tickets. Every time i was too lazy/poor/broke/lame to get tickets and I stood around saying "I need a miracle" and all those people just walked past me without giving me a ticket...I am going to screw them.

Then I am gonna buy me some skinny jeans.

Funny, the person railing against getting high seems to be the least articulate. Not to mention the most homophobic.

Posted by a gay | October 1, 2008 11:40 AM

fleet foxes, the woods, grizzly bear, bon iver, phosphorescent...

yup. all hippies. just wait til the hipsters find out that phish gets all electro-ed out as well. hope there aren't any fashion wars going on in the lots.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:40 AM

What's gay is pretty much every comment on here.

Hipsters = Hippies in terms of straw mam arguments. You're all socially racist fuckers.

Or wait....is this a Jr. High cafeteria fight?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:44 AM

exactly my point retard, all those stoners are the same
not articulate, it's obvious you didn't get it.

Yeah, your right, i'm homophobic because i used the word GAY
you really got me there.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:46 AM

Seriously I still do not get this band. It has nothing to do with passionate music fans because basically this was a bar band from Vermont who filled a void for fake hippies who never got to experience The Grateful Dead.
That being said I made a killing off scalping tickets to Trey's recent show at MHOW and dirty hippie girls even if they are kind of fake really are some good easy lays.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:47 AM

Hipsters vs. Hippies = Greasers vs. Socs.

But which is which? So hard to tell. Can't we all just get along?

I guess it wouldn't really be so much fun that way.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:50 AM

Amen on the acid.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:52 AM

All you people who speak about Phish being cool is absurd...Phish is some of the most miserable sounding music ever...have fun watching Coventry documentaries while giving each other tug jobs...

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:52 AM

And Amen on Hippie Chicks. Vermont is the jam.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:54 AM

Agreed to last post, that's funny!

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:55 AM

(Young Generally Naive) Hippies and Hipsters are all fake so lets avoid the slippery slope there...

But musically, Phish was not just a Dead void filler. I hated the Dead. Phish really filled many genre voids. They range from bluegrass to punk to folk to electronic to very spacey Pink Floyd type stuff.

My biggest complaint about live shows was actually the over abundance of variation. I only wanted the minimal spaced out electronic stuff.

No kidding aside, a lot of the haters out there would love phish if their best friend could selectively slip a track in here or there.

But with all that said. It is very hard to get to know the music of a band like this and it's very understandable why many people have a gut reaction to the name, Phish.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:56 AM

Here's a crazy idea for the haters: if you dig most of the indie rock bands covered on Brooklyn Vegan, and dislike what you've heard of Phish, this doesn't mean that Phish is terrible and indie rock is great, or vice versa. It means you have a different taste in music than Phish enthusiasts.

Put that in the bong and smoke it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 11:59 AM

Actually you used the word "gay" in a derogatory fashion, an example of insidious homophobia.

Anyway, thanks for making it clear that you can't write, spell or even read very well. You should definitely stay away from drugs- the afternoon has barely begun and you're already coming off as an angry drunk.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:01 PM

oh, come on. phish is a decent band that makes decent music - not worth hating, or declaring one of the best/most important bands of the last half century.

also:

- getting high is not a bad thing
- being gay is a superb, not bad, thing

Posted by kate | October 1, 2008 12:04 PM

Obama loves Phish. McCain hates Phish.

where do the rest of us stand?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:04 PM

Why wait until next year - I say surprise reunion show at the Roseland with Trey on the 16th.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:06 PM

lyrically, embarrassing, but musically? better than your favorite band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:07 PM

"But musically, Phish was not just a Dead void filler. I hated the Dead. Phish really filled many genre voids. They range from bluegrass to punk to folk to electronic to very spacey Pink Floyd type stuff."

Yeahhhh right, maybe that would be true if you know nothing about music or want a band that hits on all these types of styles in the most generic of ways. I will admit they have chops but give me a fucking break with this nonsense. Jerry died and The Dead were gone and Phish blew up. A way for fake hippies to do their wiggle dance in stadiums on their summer tours to continue the "vibe"

This has nothing to do with indie vs anything. Phish suck, plain and simple(and yes i have listened to their records)

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:12 PM

Arguing against Phish is like arguing against television. I'm not sure who in the universe promised either would have any artistic integrity, originality, social worth, or relevance, but occasionally they do and they're both sort of easy to avoid, if thats the sort of thing you want to waste energy on. How bout: Flaming Lips - Buttlehole surfers + musicianship = Phish

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:16 PM

Phish = greatest DIY band ever. I'm not even sure why most band that have more than a 1,000 person draw don't have a mail order ticketing system.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:20 PM

their records are bad. Billy Breathes and Farmhouse were pretty good. Worth checking out. But overall the records were absolutely awful.

They were a live band plain and simple. Never really got the whole studio production concept down.

But they really did cross genres better than any band could today. I def agree with the 11:56am comment.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:23 PM

Wow... there are so many McCain supporters here. Though a couple of you do seem informed enough to know the truth.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:25 PM

I personally don't care they are back. I have seen them 40+ times but I am done with them (until they play MSG of course) but how do you explain this band is shit when they throw a three-day music festival in maine (before everyone and their mothers threw music festivals) and 70,000 people show up - or when they play florida on NYE and 100,000 people show up? Does that mean all these 70,000-100,000 people have horrible taste in music? To have that many people show up shows something about the band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:25 PM

"Does that mean all these 70,000-100,000 people have horrible taste in music? To have that many people show up shows something about the band."

NO DOUBT!

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:42 PM

I am in a bad mood today because every blog and website mentions Phish

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:43 PM

phish is a really misunderstood band. there are a lot of really great aspects to their music that are overshadowed by people's blind hatred of hippies. they also make questionable choices that rub people the wrong way, but if most people on this list heard "Lawn Boy" or "Junta" out of context they would probably like it. a lot of their music is really fucked up and adventurous but no one cares because hippies suck so much.

Posted by brian | October 1, 2008 12:49 PM

"But they really did cross genres better than any band could today. I def agree with the 11:56am comment."

Again, you have no real knowledge of music if you think this. Crossing genres means nothing if its so generic and by the numbers.

""Does that mean all these 70,000-100,000 people have horrible taste in music? To have that many people show up shows something about the band.""

Amazing. This idiot equates mass appeal with some kind of acknowledgement of greatness. My dumb friend you would have been a hit in 1940's Germany.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:50 PM

Hating the comments section is so 2007... Just have fun everyone and the world will be a better place. Can't I love Kimya Dawson, Fleet Foxes, Bon Iver and Phish?

Posted by Andrew | October 1, 2008 12:52 PM

I bet there is a large amount of mental dissonance that most people today must have stored up in their associations with, The Phish.

If you think about it, Phish was big in the Dave Matthews area. This has to rub off or get mushed together in the memory sector that "what is Phish" resides in.

I would be willing to bet that if Phish could revamp and grow out of today's music world they would gain a new understanding from many more people.

and with that said, if Phish were to have formed as a band in today's DIY indie-band Torrent world, you can bet they would be seen in a much different light.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 12:53 PM

so all you phish haters...what kind of music do you like?

Phish always has amazing light shows.

""But they really did cross genres better than any band could today. I def agree with the 11:56am comment."

Again, you have no real knowledge of music if you think this. Crossing genres means nothing if its so generic and by the numbers. ""

You should assume that just attempting to "generically" insult someone's knowledge of music is asinine in a comments section.

But you have a point in some cases. Phish's bluegrass stuff was bla and they're rockabilly shit was annoying. Pretty much when they sang i couldn't stand it.

but their minimal trippy electronic stuff was so beyond what any other electronic guided bands can pull off live (except what Radiohead is able to pull off live). They're cohesive ability to create sonic meanderings were very impressive.

THough I still would prefer a well constructed album from any random artist off the front page of Boomkat, but still. They always were impressive for a live performance.

Now if you would like to reply with something constructive, i bet other would enjoy it as well. this is a music blog. People are here for a reason. like, "hey you should check out band X, they do this better than Phish."

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:08 PM

Man, there are some lame ass haters out there. Musically, Phish would rip to shreds just about every band out there. And have you haters seen them live? There are very few bands that have crowds as into it as Phish does. And it takes some serious effort to even get into the band. They have played over 600 different songs throughout their career and could probably play one of 200 or 300 songs at any given time.

Phish = Great music. Great lights. Great atmosphere.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:11 PM

Gheeeey

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:11 PM

The comment about Phish blowing up because Jerry died is patently false. While it is subjective, many deadheads don't like Phish. Especially your older ones.

But from a statistical standpoint, Phish started selling out arenas in late 1993 and all of 1994 and then for the rest of their career. The dead also sold out all of their shows until Jerry Garcia died in the middle of 1995. Phish was already a very very tough ticket by then.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:11 PM

The reuniting of Phish is the first sign of healthy change to come in the country. Everyone should be happy.

Stop bashing one another.

We all share in some love for music, whether it's jam bands or hip-hop. No one is ever at fault for loving music.

Remember, those who try to bring down others are already down themselves. Just be happy and share love, not hate.

BrooklynVegan should really post some files worth hearing to support this post.

Anyone out there got a couple of good (hosted) examples of phish songs (studio and live) that are good for haters to hear?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:16 PM

"The idiocy on here runs rampant. Can their really be this many stupid people? It was not comparing a jamband with nazis."

yes, it was comparing a jamband with the nazis. phish is awesome. period.

""They have played over 600 different songs throughout their career and could probably play one of 200 or 300 songs at any given time."

that commenter was trying to explain how many songs they play. as in their catalog is massive. and from one show to the next you may hear one of hundreds (original or covers).

that is rather daunting to fathom if you yourself are a part of touring band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:19 PM

Phish ain't shit compared to the Nazi jambands I saw back in the 40s.

Posted by Art Vandelay | October 1, 2008 1:20 PM

yeah but I couldnt stand the "big Band" sound that dominated the '40s Nazi jamband scene. The Polish Jew Jam scene was so ahead of the curve. Such a shame...

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:43 PM

does BV like phish?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:47 PM

I don't have anything against hippies. I just think Phish's music is really, really uninteresting. I like good songwriting, and while these guys are all talented musicians, they never wrote compelling songs. And their lyrics are just awful. That's the main reason the Grateful Dead comparisons were always so off base. American Beauty in particular has got of really well-crafted songs on it. Phish play their instruments well, but I for one need more than that.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:49 PM

phish is a great example of a diy band - they became one of the biggest touring bands in the country, for over 20 years, without using radio or tv. and theyre really good musicians. and seem like nice enough guys.

there isnt any legit reason to "hate them" unless you just think it's cool to hate them for some reason.

i probably wont attend any of the shows, but i do appreciate them as a band.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 1:59 PM

phish...so wait, are they the grateful dead?

also, I heard fleet foxes are opening. and dan deacon is DJing b/w sets.

No reggae is music, matisyahu is doing something really awful that should not be called music or reggae. He is to reggae what Poison is to heavy metal.

damn, i was gonna go with the nazi jamband jokes. nice play, anons prior. anyway, music is stupid except for gay nazi jambands.

these dudes are musical slayers, though, for real..the mike gordon/leo kottke record is really good.

trey is a maniac on the guitar...fishman's got chops like will berman (!)...the vida blue was actually pretty awesome...

their lyrics are absolutely retarted though. just terrible.

whatever, if this deflects some attention from disco biscuits, i'm psyched...although i guess phish is more for the potheads than the pharmaceutical camp..........but i digress.

have more fun, you muddy sticks. no one cares about which gender you're into or what bands you think are cool or not. smoke it. Amen.

First, everybody give themselves a hand, maybe best BV comments section since that homeless guy died at McCarren Pool.

Second,
"Does that mean all these 70,000-100,000 people have horrible taste in music?"

Yes, and it's also a scary comment on the sad state of this country's education system.

The truth is nobody goes to Phish shows for the music, it's all about the drugs and party atmosphere. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but lets just be realistic.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 2:57 PM

"149, all those sold out shows, no one was compelled or influenced by the music."

I never said no one was "influenced" by their music. I said they were bad songwriters. Plenty of guitarists are influenced by Trey. But lots of people sell out concerts, for lots of reasons. I don't think a band's popularity says anything about their songwriting. Most Phish fans I know were morstly into Trey's guitar playing anyway, not the songs. Which is fine. The reason I posted in the first place is that you guys keep getting so defensive. People don't "hate" this band because of some bias against hippies or because they're "pretentious". Some people just don't like listening to them. I was trying to explain why I'm one of those people.

"please name the lyrical genius you worship. "

If you want a "genius" lyricist, Bob Dylan comes to mind (obviously). Or Jeffrey Lee Pierce (Gun Club). Or Lou Reed. Or Patti Smith. Or Tom Waits. Matt Berninger's lyrics are fantastic. Jim James is a great songwriter. The guys in TV on the Radio are too.

And who cares if they play 600 songs???? 600 of shit is still shit.

But the lamest comment had to be this winnner "wow... did the haters really lose this comments war"

If you think of the comments section as a war to be won or lost, may i suggest seriously thinking about killing yourself because you certainly have no life and are just taking up space in an already crowded planet.

Apparently I do - go find a sense of humor.

Posted by Charleston Beaglesworth | October 1, 2008 6:29 PM

5:07pm Seriously are you that dumb? It is not a matter of understanding where the joke was coming from. More a matter of the joke and subsequent jokes not being funny in the least bit.
I was not that person 3:44 and I have a great sense of humor. Find me a joke that was actually funny in these comments and I promise I will laugh.

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 6:57 PM

I've managed to never listen to phish because I'm afraid that I would like them. What irritated me the most when this band was popular and touring was the crazed insistence from their fans that I would love them as much as they did if only I would give them a listen. Why do you people give a shit if people don't like them?

Posted by Anonymous | October 1, 2008 6:58 PM

I will only listen to bands with thoroughly ambivalent fans.

All I remember is in high school the kids who liked phish were teabaggers

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2008 7:51 AM

I agree w/6:58. I know of no other band whose fans are so rabid in trying to get me to listen to them. I have, and it's not for me...It's not bad music, per se, I just find it boring. That said, I've gotten into the Dead quite a bit recently. Then again, I 'm probably a bit older than most of the folks on here, and don't really care about scenes or what's hip or anything like that.

My advice to you is to do what your mother and father did, and GET A JOB, SIR.

"lyrically, embarrassing, but musically? better than your favorite band."

I have always hated Phish but I must agree with this. While their songs and fans make me do a Sarah Palin cringe in disgust, these boys can play!

You fools blog about the Vivian Girls and such bands who don't even who how to operate their own instruments.

Seriously, as little as I want to admit this....Phish is WAY more talented than any current bands I listen to and love, including all of the ones the BV writes about.

ps - Phish suck! Sorry, I had to add that :)

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2008 9:40 AM

Phish do an excellent cover of The Talking Heads' "Cross-Eyed and Painless."

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2008 10:00 AM

You're all worthless and weak!

Posted by Dee Snider | October 2, 2008 10:40 AM

Every Halloween between the years of 1995 and 1998 Phish would pay hommage to their musical influences by performing an entire album in it's entirety. These are the albums that were performed:

1994 - Beatles "The White Album"
1995 - The Who "Quadrophenia"
1996 - Talking Heads "Remain in Light"
1998 - Velvet Underground "Loaded"

What other 'indie' band would have the balls or the chops to be able to pull this off? The answer is none. To not be a fan of improvisation is one thing, but to say that Phish isn't innovative or talented is just ignorant. Eat it Billyburg trustafarians.

Posted by gay4trey | October 2, 2008 1:54 PM

Umm... no offense to Phish, but covering someone else's album isn't "innovative" at all. I have friends in bar bands who cover songs off these albums. And a Phish fan calling other people trustafarians is just stupid. Most Phish fans I know are rich kids from Connecticut.

Posted by Anonymous | October 2, 2008 2:18 PM

I didn't mean to say that playing covers was innovative, but the idea of playing someone else's entire album kind of is, particularly when they have a huge catalogue of their own to draw from.

The point also being that although often discounted on account of being labeled 'hippie music' in BV circles, they have clearly shown that they are influenced by bands well beyond the Grateful Dead. The Velvet Underground and Talking Heads...doesn't get any bigger in terms of 'indie' influence.

Posted by gay4trey | October 2, 2008 2:30 PM

Love how many comments this post is generating.

I listen to many of the bands this blog covers, and my taste in music is probably pretty similar to most of the people that check this blog.

That being said, I've seen Phish 29 times, they are a terrific band. The fan base can appear to be idiotic cause of the abundance of wooks/people just trying to party, but everyone I knew in the Phish community had great taste in music, most of them being musicians themselves.

And yeah, many of their lyrics are nonsensical, that's sort of the point, their musical chops speak for themselves.

Posted by Chase | October 2, 2008 5:01 PM

^-- agreed. i am also a huge phish fan, and i think we have very eclectic tastes in music. see you in hampton!!

Posted by Anonymous | October 18, 2008 1:28 PM

I can't believe you people are still talking about this.

Posted by Chareleston Beaglesworth | October 21, 2008 11:46 PM

Phish is highly musically talented, no argument there. Very versatile and unique.

Their problem: They can’t write good tunes. With few exceptions, their own forumulated songs suck! As mentioned earlier, not in the least compelling. Half their concerts in later years all they did was other people’s music. And I know where I stand when I say this. I was living near the Burlington, VT area when they were first becoming big, and was excited when Picture of Nectar was released to the big scene.

So I attended as many shows as I could, and bought their next few albums. But then I found myself less impressed with Phish and their entire scene. And Bored. When I listened to a Phish lp, I could’nt wait for it to end. Sure, great jams, but it left me uninspired and I could never remember what the tunes sounded like afterwards. So I went back to my good ole Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, The Who, The Stones, Deep Purple, Rush, bands that could WRITE and play. (Notice I didnt mention The DEAD)
