Ponytail
Ponytail

Ponytail & Passion Pit were a perfect mini-bill all by themselves. Last night at Music Hall (10/21), Ponytail played after Shearwater who played after the Sammies who played after Emmy the Great.

The switch from Sheawarter to Ponytail was the most drastic/funniest/perfect change of the night. Ponytail are so good. Many agree with me. Many passionately disagree . Never before have I talked to so many people that were so split in opinion after a performance. Luckily the ones who find the Baltimore band unappealing had the downstairs bar to escape to if they wanted to.

After the show Ponytail left to play a second show at the new Studio @ Webster Hall.

Then came Passion Pit. If there's one thing the MA band have in common with the two bands who played before them, it's a non-traditional singing method. Passion Pit make dance music that is sung, by frontman and band founder Michael Angelakos, in a very high voice, though, to quote Bill again, he doesn't quite have the control of his falsetto that Shearwater's Melberg does. That's not a bad thing. As a young band, Passion Pit's music may not translate as well live as their hit songs do on record, but for a band that hasn't been playing together that long, they definitely have it musically together. They were also clearly the band most people were there to see. Their set is when the the 600+ capacity venue was literally at capacity and most packed. I got nervous for a second that people would leave before Jens, but most stayed and/or new people came.

PP have a few more CMJ shows coming up and then a tour with Yelle. Ponytail have a few more NYC shows coming up including Todd P's Halloween bash. Those dates and more picutres from last night, below...

Both bands were fantastic last night. I love the write up about Ponytail especially as it was my first time seeing them last night and all I could think was "there's no way my friends would enjoy them as much as I do."

agree. a definite break from shearwater before, but it made Ponytail's that much more distinctive and entertaining. That, and it was a great lead in to Passion Pit as well.

Go ponytail. phenomenal. Anyone know whether the ground control is at market vs. danbro? Been seeing different things on different sites

Ponytail was TERRIBLE and I'm not going to let any of you intimidate me into thinking otherwise!

Kate, no one is going to 'intimidate' you into trying to like a band which your pedestrian tastes prohibit you from enjoying.

Run along.

People don't hate Ponytail the band. The actual musicians in the band are awesome. The lead singer is the absolute worst. If she would just shut the hell up it would be fine. I do appreciate her energy but, holy shit is she annoying.

more annoying than passion pit? i think not.

hey, that's my old yamaha!

This was the first time ever seeing Ponytail, and I thought the lead singer was a 12 year old boy.

boy or girl. Id hit it.

You are all haters. Ponytail rules. Molly is the nicest and cutest girl and you are all jealous of her mega talent.

Posted by Grace | October 22, 2008 7:26 PM

wow. some angry dudes here. take it somewhere else cause life is too short to be so unhappy. support what you like and forget the negative stuff. these groups are working hard to entertain and either they'll make it or they won't. would love to see you up there.

Posted by musicman | October 22, 2008 7:47 PM

by the way, passion pit is incredible. saw them at pianos last month and will get down to see them again by the end of the week.

Posted by musicman | October 22, 2008 7:50 PM

Ponytail is infinitely better than most shit on this site.

Posted by Anonymous | October 22, 2008 9:26 PM

Ponytail would be great if they got rid of they're singer (to call her that is an insult to people who actually sing. worst vocalist ever.) got a bass player, and changed they're name to something a lot less stupid. then, we'll talk.

Posted by A | October 22, 2008 10:16 PM

Ya'll can go fuck yourselves for hating on Molly. Number 52 has got her back. Bring your beef down to Bmore and feel some linebacker powerrrrrrrrr.

How do you hate on a band that make you smile? Go home and listen to some Bright Eyes or some shit.

I'm still waiting to see Ponytail live... You're all a bit more fortunate than me.

excuse me sir, I think you accidentally posted on the wrong site. If you only want bullshit ass kissing, I'm sure Spin has a message board.

"Molly is the nicest and cutest girl and you are all jealous of her mega talent."

I'm generally indifferent on Ponytail, but using the words "Mega talent" might be going a little overboard.

is that Music Snob in a crowd shot with a tin of cookies under his arm???

Posted by Anonymous | October 23, 2008 3:32 PM

why is no one discussing how much of a fucking joke "Jens Lekman Singing DJ" was?

this should have been billed as "Jens Lekman (DJ set)"

ponytail is rad. it's like playing Cruisin' USA while smoking opium.

passion pit was retarded. it's really weak when people try to sing in falsetto when they can't...

it'd be better if he'd just use his real voice...
