Radiohead @ Outside Lands (more by Juan Ramirez)

The official statement is below...
Little more than a year since Radiohead's October 10, 2007 pay-what-you-like self-release of its seventh album, In Rainbows, some conclusive statistics were made available at the recent "You Are In Control" conference in Reykjavik, Iceland.
For those who missed coverage of the conference while engrossed in something as trivial as the Presidential Debates or the world economic collapse, the following is a summation of key answers to FAQs:
* In Rainbows has sold three million copies thus far, a figure that includes downloads from Radiohead.com, physical CDs, a deluxe 2-CD/vinyl box set, as well as sales via iTunes and other digital retailers.
* The In Rainbows deluxe edition sold 100,000 copies via Radiohead fan service W.A.S.T.E.
* Radiohead made more money prior to In Rainbows' January 2008 physical release than its total take on 2003's Hail To the Thief.
* The physical release of In Rainbows entered both the US and UK charts at #1 in January, despite having been freely available since October 2007.
* In Rainbows was the first Radiohead album available on iTunes, where it went in at #1 in January, selling 30,000 in its first week.
In Rainbows also owns the singular distinction of being the first record widely regarded as album of the year in advance of its actual physical release: By the time TBD/ATO released In Rainbows to retail on January 1, 2008, the digital version had already topped the 2007 year-end lists at NEW YORK, THE NEW YORK TIMES, ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, NPR, TIME, PEOPLE, ROLLING STONE, BLENDER, SPIN, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES and many more.
Radiohead recently concluded a world tour in Japan, one that sold over 1.2 million tickets.

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 12:22 PM
I'm pretty sure the release meant 1.2 million tickets throughout the whole world tour. Not 1.2 million tickets sold in Japan.
Posted by Anon | October 20, 2008 12:28 PM
Oh yes..I see that now. 1.2 Million tickets over the tour!
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 12:31 PM
they did not sold 1.2 million only in japan! in fact one of their shows was not even sold out!!!
Posted by mj | October 20, 2008 12:33 PM

hopefully by their next tour some of the frat bros will have gotten over the online hype and decide to skip the show. Will make the already amazing concert that much more enjoyable.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 12:55 PM
Damn those frat boys and their love of the Internet hype!!!

Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 1:33 PM
i love how we can take radiohead down a peg by saying they didn't sell out one of their shows.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 1:34 PM
"* Radiohead made more money prior to In Rainbows' January 2008 physical release than its total take on 2003's Hail To the Thief."
well, that deluxe edition that sold 100,000 copies was close to 80$ US...
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 1:39 PM
yeah, awesome and rich clearly
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 1:45 PM
I'd like to see how many internet downloads they "sold" and for how much total and compare that with how much they would have netted going through iTunes.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 1:58 PM
"so what they're trying say is, they're rich."
"no, what they're trying to say is they are awesome."
no, what they're trying to say is they're rich because they're awesome.

what is it about japan that had them playing more of the rare songs that they know their true fans want to hear? i'm not complaining about the liberty state park setlists per se, but they seemed to really mix it up in japan, according to 12:53 anyway..

Anonymous 1:59 PM-
Why are you saying that the only "true fans" that Radiohead have are in NY or the U.S? Just because most of the Japanese in Japan don't speak English doesn't mean that they aren't "true fans".

"Those Japan shows were incredible. NYC shows could have been better! They played..…."
um. those NYC shows were far from bad. especially Saturday. I saw the London shows as well.
def sad i missed all these rarities tho...
Japan always get the B-Sides in their record stores AND live it seems. ya know why? JAPAN RULES!.
YAY for YURA YURA tonight!

"They're no Viv Girls"
hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.....sad sigh....

"so what they're trying say is, they're rich."
"no, what they're trying to say is they are awesome."
"no, what they're trying to say is they're rich because they're awesome."
No... What they are trying to say is, the marketing ideal, that everyone speculated on, worked.

A true fan is someone who is dumb enought to pay $80us for a Deluxe Edition.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 2:27 PM
by no means was it ever implied that the japanese radiohead fans are less than true. it just seems they kept the setlist fairly predictable on the US tour and their rabid north american fans want to hear the rare songs, too. nice try twisting words around, 2:11. crazy motherfucker.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 2:36 PM
they probably got bored of playing the same songs
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 2:50 PM
what's a radio?
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 3:38 PM
they play different songs their cause the japanese releases have those songs already opposed to as b-sides. so some of those b-sides the japanese know as like the best song on the album, so naturally they should play it for them, where for us it wasnt even really on the album, so cant really be the best...

Radiohead fucking sucks.
Posted by sixtypercentgrey | October 20, 2008 5:18 PM
Radiohead now needs to invent the money tree
Posted by Dooder City | October 20, 2008 5:30 PM
proof that money doesn't buy talent or intelligence. planting trees doesnt do anything fucktards
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 6:43 PM
I just wish they'd play "Creep." It's the only song I know by The Radioheads.
Posted by Anonymous | October 20, 2008 7:05 PM
this news is huge! apparently radiohead is a really popular and successful band, and their publicity stunt was lucrative
I am blown away

Posted by jack | October 20, 2008 7:54 PM
The only thing wrong with Dan Deacon is when you call him dd
Posted by jack attack | October 21, 2008 2:59 AM
"they probably got bored of playing the same songs"
Lord knows I do listening to them....
Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2008 8:24 AM
Oh if the cello and violin players from Ra Ra Riot would join Radiohead...
Posted by Anonymous | October 21, 2008 9:13 AM
Nah they are trying to prove to themselves and other bands that you no lonnger need a middleman to get your music sold. eh but in my opinion they only got this much sold becasue they were started by a major label
Posted by Anonymous | April 16, 2009 7:02 AM
It's been proven that you don't need a middle man to get your music sold - it's just a question of how much time to you want to spend promoting it vs. working on it.
