On his third long-player since emerging four years ago from the New England wilderness, folk-soul lumberjack Ray LaMontagne breaks from his own proven formula, goosing his delicately ragged croon with bright r&b horns ("You Are the Best Thing"), spaghetti-western whistles ("Meg White"), and Black Crowes-style Southern-rock guitars ("Henry Nearly Killed Me [It's a Shame]"). Whereas, in the past, longtime producer Ethan Johns kept the sonic clutter to a minimum in order to spotlight LaMontagne's remarkable vocals--Ray is somebody you wouldn't mind seeing with only an acoustic for accompaniment--here the pair construct an in-studio ecosystem nearly as elaborate as Lambchop's. [The Village Voice]Ray LaMontagne's new album Gossip in the Grain is out this week. On Saturday night (Oct 11), Ray played Radio City Music Hall in NYC. More pictures from that show below...

Absolutely amazing. People should never miss an opportunity to see this guy.

Shitty recap from the Voice. The writer apparently hasn't listened to Ray's previous album -- which has strings and horns on several tracks. Even "Trouble" is hardly sparse.
Commenter above has it spot on though. What a stunning show. The band was incredibly tight and Ray seemed completely at ease on the big stage. Hardly the meek, uncomfortable man of show's past. And the pedal steel player put the whole night over the top for me. Would've liked to see Ray end with something more uptempo, but really the show was just incredible.
Leona Naess was also great too. Good bill.

i agree, 10:03. the review is typical lazy journalism from the Voice, as has been the case recently. what happened to them? nothing but suckage.
Also, Ray has played plenty of acoustic shows, it seems that the reporter is just now being made aware that RL exists.
All that aside, it was an amazing performance by Ray and his band on Saturday night. and props to Leona Naess...great voice.

I am still loving the latent awesomeness from Sat night's show. I wish Ray would come around more often, he is such a great performer. The new album is gggrrrrreeeeeaaaatt!

Mediocre music for people who have no idea what good music is.

"Mediocre music for people who have no idea what good music is."
The irony of your statement is not lost on the rest of us. Go find a Les Savy Fav or Fuck Buttons thread to taint.

To add to the lazy reporting comments, they also said he's from the "wilderness of New England." He's not. He's from my hometown of Lewiston, Maine, which although not a bustling city, is not exactly the wilderness either.
