Boston Spaceships

The thing I like most about Robert Pollard is that even though I barely have the time, attention span, or finances to keep up with his ever-expanding, post-GBV projects, I know I am guaranteed a whale of a time at his live shows. Die-hard familiarity of his music is simply not essential to the enjoyment of one of his shows (though, comfortable shoes and beer kinda helps). The man is a personal deity of air-tight live entertainment. The Boston Spaceships gig at the Highline Ballroom on 10/1 was no deviation from a flawless track record of incredible Pollard experiences. They hit the stage pretty much right at 9:30pm and completely dominated. High kicks, mic swinging, hilarious yet often times unintelligable stage banter, a RIDICULOUSLY awesome rhythm section, and a crowd more than eager to drink, push, shove, pogo, and sweat all over each other made for a fun time. I had to leave the show earlier than I wanted to in order to check out another (really awful) show across town and this kills me as the Spaceships ended up doing two encores packed with classic GBV tracks. Besides some familiar die hard fans and friends, also spotted in the crowd were GBV alumni including guitarist Doug Gillard and drummer Kevin March (who you may have also seen here). A few more pics from the show below...

this was an amazing show. the new songs are really great, for those of you who haven't been keeping up with the records (gosh knows it's hard sometimes.)

the club is open, again

game of pricks ended the 1st encore right? and they brought up the house music, i thought and everyone left. was there a second encore with more gbv?? i'll be very upset if i missed it since i'd heard he had done 2 encores in other cities with more gbv stuff. what did they play in the 2nd encore?

the greatest songwriter/frontman/pure artist in the last 20 years. Pollard puts EVERY single band talked about on here to shame.

So excited that I will be seeing him in my humble city tonight. The last time GBV played here, Pollard stumbled backstage for about 5 minutes and then returned, shouting, "I'm Rick James, bitch!"

did it ever really close?

@OP: No, Gillard was only a guest with the Oranges Band. DG has a new band under his own name, debuting at two CMJ shows, and about to release a new solo album, per his MySpace and Facebook pages.

And, yes, that Boston Spaceships show was great.

saw the St Louis gig last night. it was great fun. the setlist contained most of the Boston Spaceships album, stuff from his more recent releases (though not the 4 Merge albums), and songs from his upcoming album (I forget the name, it has "planets" in the title).

they played two encores. the first included a bunch of GBV classics like Tractor Rape Chain, Pricks, etc. the band left the stage and the club turned the music on but the crowd kept screaming for more, so they came back out and played Salty Salute and Motor Away. great night, super tight band.

I was a bit disappointed that there were less than 200 people there but it's OK. the band and the (drunken) crowd were having a blast. for what it's worth, I would highly advise anyone who has not seen them so far to catch one of the upcoming dates. I don't see the dude returning to any sort of regular touring schedule. CHEERS!
