Shudder to Think

Shudder to Think is an American Post-Hardcore/Alternative rock group. Formed in 1986, they released three albums on the Washington, D.C. Dischord Records label and have been labeled a punk band, though they drew upon a wide range of stylistic influences, including pop. Their music is characterized by a complex mix of these stylistic influences, as well as by technical precision and melodic virtuosity. Singer Craig Wedren's characteristic operatic singing style set the band apart from other post-punk D.C.-area bands. [Wikipedia]
Though they quietly made some appearances here and there over the past year, Shudder to Think played their first official NYC reunion show at Webster Hall on Saturday night (Oct 4, 2008). I unfortunately had to miss it, but Craig promised a "fucking amazing show". Was it? Openers were Pattern Is Movement and The Jealous Girlfriends. More pictures and the official setlist below...

Amazing??? Not sure. Solid? Yes! I wish I had the setlist. Chocolate, X-French T, Call Of The Playground, No RM Kentucky, Hit Liquor, 9 Fingers, were definitely played. Also, Day Ditty with Nina Perrsons on backup vocals was the last song they did and sounded great! Nice pics. No Red House kind of bummed me out.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:54 AM

Red House was the first song of the set.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:55 AM

no red house? lame.

9 fingers on you is such a great song.

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:57 AM

yeah red house was the first song. and it was amazing, as was the rest of the set. i never got to see them back in the day but shudder to think's performance saturday night was one of the best i've ever seen by any band, couldn't believe how good they were. craig and nathan were insane

Yes, they opened with "Red House". They also played "The Man Who Rolls", "Gang of $", "Earthquakes Come Home, "Love Catastrophe", "Shake Your Halo Down", "Rag", "Lies About the Sky", "About Three Dreams", "The Ballad of Maxwell Demon", "Pebbles", and I think "Jade Dust Eyes", but I may have imagined that last one and forgotten one or two others.

I thought they were great, and they really looked to be enjoying themselves. I wished the set was a little longer (main set was about an hour, then the encores), and I would have liked a few more 50,000 BC cuts, but those are small complaints.

Pattern's drummer is awesome, but I wish the singer had more vocabulary than "Ewww, um, pum". Girlfriends were only OK. The singer's got an amazing voice, but their music is too middle-of-the-road for my tastes. It didn't Rock, nor was there a great sense of emotion. Just kind of polite coolness.

This is Anon 9:54. Me and my friends walked in late and I thought we might have missed a song, but the guy at the door said they just started.
Sucks that I missed it.

Who played guitar for Jealous Girlfriends? Did their lineup change or did dude cut his hair?

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:07 PM

i think she said someone filled in for their regular guitarist

Posted by Anonymous | October 6, 2008 9:47 PM

Re: jealous girlfriens. where is the guy who sang and played guitar with the long blonde hair? from the photos it looks like he wasn't there?

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2008 3:53 AM

sorry, just saw 9:47's comment.

Re: Shudder to Think photos: Did this photographer possibly confuse his brown-haired, goateed guitar slingers? Cuz that anonymous hired gun (who played fine, no offense) ain't Nathan. Nathan's the scragglier dude, stage right, whose guitar-god posturing would have obviously identified him as somebody who should have gotten a photo or two in this set.

Great set!

David Wain was at the Philly show. I win.

Posted by Anonymous | October 7, 2008 12:28 PM

Pattern is Movement blew, save for the drummer who should be in a more awesome band because he is quite good.

I missed the opening acts, but Shudder To Think was amazing. Great setlist, tight ass band. They sounded too good for this to simply be a one-off tour. I'm ready to see them again now!

First time at the venue... it was pretty lame, I must say. The concert room is ok, but the club music crept in and could be heard during the show, could be felt on your feet through the floor, etc. Pretty distracting. Between that and the early as hell stage times for the groups the concert seemed relegated to being a sideshow!

But boy was Shudder To Think great. Great, great, great, great, great!

shit talkers make great music im sure.

It doesn't matter whether he was a janitor or not. It matters who he is now.
