nice work, bv. you have most things, but still missing the studio at webster hall shows and KEXP if you count those.

bv,
direct question for you. why do you keep censoring me? I make valid contributions via comments...
Posted by orange z | October 14, 2008 3:24 PM
passes get you into any show? or do you have to buy tix? it's okay because this lineup mildly sucks for the weekend (Fri and Sat.) anyway

what's to hate about cmj? The hundreds of new bands? The free booze? Did you guys read it in a guidebook or something before you all moved from Wisconsin that you're supposed to hate cmj?

"direct question for you. why do you keep censoring me? I make valid contributions via comments..."
I believe I just found a comment by you in the spam folder which has now been unspammed if that's what you're referring to.

CMJ has been a waste for at least the last 5 years. The last CMJ show that I went to that was worth all the headache was PJ Harvey and Damon & Naomi (with Ghost) at the Knitting Factory in 2000.

I enjoy showgoing and I tend to go to even more shows than usual during CMJ. hell yea!

yes, buying a ticket in advance and going to a show is SUCH a headache.

apart from visa issues keeping more foreign bands from playing, i think cmj week is better than ever. until four or five years ago, most bands only got to play once and getting into a hot show meant planting yourself at a particular club when it opened.
now chances are any band worth seeing is playing at least three times (or if you're the muslims, ten times) and often some of those shows are free with free booze. sure, the sets are short but that's just the way it is.
and shows at bowery, mhow, mercury lounge won't be any different than what they always are, except maybe more drunk people with laminates around the necks.
so call in sick, check out some day parties, chill out, have a free soco n' lime, and don't sweat it. most bands you really want to see will be back.
btw... this year's Crashin' In Party lineup is pretty amazing.

CMJ is ok, but doesn't hold a candle up to SXSW.
SXSW is where its at.

anyone. do they sell tickets for individual panels?
Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2008 5:42 PM
5:42, I don't think so.
Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2008 5:47 PM
the schedule maker is awesome, but a lot of the shows i'm going to aren't listed. i guess they're not official enough or something.
Posted by Anonymous | October 14, 2008 8:06 PM
they dont sell individual passes to panels. if you really need to go to one, try emailing the panelist for a free guest pass, or better yet just borrow someone's badge. no one really ever uses them in the daytime anyway.

I've been reading the posts as far as CMJ and although I'm glad to be playing in this year's festival, I can honestly say that looking at the schedule, I don't recognize 95% of the bands playing. Anyone give a fellow artist some ideas of what shows to go to?
thanks

Stop trying to make "Nick and Norah" hip via BV comments... it just doesn't have the cultural capital of "Juno," because it was fucking terrible.
Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2008 12:44 AM
serious hostility going on here.. any reason? I just said I didn't know who to go see during CMJ...there are so many bands and i'm not "in touch" with what's going on i guess
Posted by josh charles | October 15, 2008 12:51 AM
Anon. 12:27 AM here. I posted that comment just to be a wiseass, but I'll point out now that you could've asked your question without identifying yourself and including the URL of your Web site, which cause your comment to smell like spam.

sorry about that .... i'm new to posting here and i was not aware that you could fill out the comments anonymous... now i know....no worries..

cmj is meant for up-and-comers, you fucking noobs.
it gives other bands a chance. god fucking forbid.
Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2008 10:50 AM
If you don't mind blackberry's, industry folk talking up shitty bands, and too many bloggers taking pictures of nothing then CMJ is the stone cold cooles.
Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2008 11:00 AM
Yeah, but you can find that at every show in NYC.
Posted by Anonymous | October 15, 2008 11:20 AM
@josh charles: No, in general, you should feel free to fill out the Name and URL fields above the Comments box. It's just that by posting a comment that mentions you'll be performing at CMJ *and* signing it, your comment ever-so-slightly smacked of self promotion. (If you were a regular commenter who regularly signs his comments and who isn't a dick, I wouldn't have found fault with your announcing that you'll be at CMJ.)
But as I said, my initial response to you was just out of a desire to snark. I think you'll find that's typical behavior among BV commenters, though comments often aren't clever enough to rise to the level of snark and only manage to be abrasive (or worse).
