The Coathangers @ Pianos (CMJ), NYC - pics

words & photos by Faith-Ann Young

Coathangers

The Coathangers played in the den upstairs at Pianos to a jammed crowd of hipsters during the Sub Pop/Hardly Art/Suicide Squeeze CMJ night on Friday, October 24th. As previously mentioned, the Atlanta all-girl group recently started calling Suicide Squeeze their label home.

The chicks reminded me of the ultimate punk girl band- the type that subsists off of cigarettes and reverb, who smashed barbies into smithereens as kids, and that currently has a revolving group of 20 boytoys (or girls) knocking on their door at all times. Their songs were loud and frenetic- with statements that were totally non-sequitur - the way punk used to be before top 40 came along and sat its fat ass on originality. Like a stale joke, they had My Little Ponies and candles set up at the front of the stage like some sort of voodoo warning: stay away feeble ones. And the crowd went wild. The thrill lay in the fact that, though you couldn't clap, snap or swivel to even one note, (though the drunken ones tried), the music was angry, funny, sadistic, and bold. Hell, they've got lyrics about nestling in boobies and shit and other f*ed up, fun pretexts-(but if you're easily offended- don't worry-because you could't really hear what they are saying anyway.) Plus, as if to confuse you or amuse you even more, the chicks just kept revolving instruments and places and microphones like the set was musical chairs and the songs were just preludes to a switch. The ended with multi-colored confetti and riffs. The crowd? Still wild.

To sum The Coathangers up: it isn't pop, it isn't pretty, and it may not even sound good. It's tattooed punk chicks with attitude and if you don't like it, go home, they definitely don't give a damn.

I heard they're actually going to stop letting women vote now because of bands like this.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 12:28 PM

vivian girls write great songs.

coathangers are just cute(ish) indie girls with tataoos being silly.

I enjoy both bands, but they really aren't in the same league, unless you're such a huge fucking dumbass that you just see "girls with tattoos" when you watch either band.

No Talent

their mothers should have used coat hangers. if ya know what i mean.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 12:58 PM

first of all, i was there. it was not "jammed". and no one was going "wild". and they are not "good", not even in a "good because it's bad" kind of way.

i mean, playing the bass is just really, not, that, difficult. she should learn. i understand the concept of confronting the idea that good bands need to have good musicians. but i just can't get on the whole "worse is better" train here.

I had an abortion and it did not sound anything like The Coathangers. More like Pretty & Nice?

Posted by Sara | October 29, 2008 1:48 PM

Look at the photos. These girls are clearly having some fun. Remember having fun at shows?

Posted by Derek | October 29, 2008 1:54 PM

The Coathangers are godawful. "It doesn't sound good"?? So they're awesome cause they sound like shit? How depressing. Please don't print positive things about them just because they're girls. There are plenty of girls out there who can really fucking play - these girls have no talent.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 1:54 PM

i just listened on myspace and they're really bad. poor man's miko mika. also vivian girls sound nothing like them, vivian girls are actually pretty good, unlike these ladies.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 1:54 PM

I'm sure the Vivian Girls are relieved that you assholes now have someone else to hate on.

in an intelligent reader, this might make you stop to think about whether you're maybe just... dickheads?

I'm sure no such reckoning will happen here.

So what if their show is more pep-rally than symphony? I was there, and it was thrilling to experience something pure like this again. Totally unchecked in attitude, they put their personalities out there, creating an atmosphere much like a slumber-party. And the audience responded. Maybe it wasn't 'wild' but it was the one show I saw this year at CMJ that I'm not likely to forget.

you fucking hipsters make me sick

go back to new jersey

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 3:44 PM

I would totally bang every chick in this band. There I said it.

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 4:00 PM

talentless pieces of shit. horrible tattoo on that girl. dumbass!

Posted by Anonymous | October 29, 2008 4:47 PM

Dear Haters,

These girls rock. Ive seen plenty of their shows and i can say for one that they never claimed to be anything like the Vivian Girls so dont put them in any category because they've made their own. I would like to see any one of you play an instrument... oh whats that.... you cant?? thought so, and wait ...oh what... you dont have a record lable... yeah thats what i thought. so stop downing all that haterade and stop blogging about all the shows you go to. oh and dont let someones tattoos get you so angry.. they arent on you... DUMBASS.

"their mothers should have used coat hangers. if ya know what i mean."

HA

Posted by Tight Bangs | October 30, 2008 2:55 PM

actually i both play an instrument (many of them actually) and have a record label. and i would like to say that it must be a terrible feeling as a female musician to watch these girls get praised. they are exploiting their own perceived shortcomings in intelligence as a result of being women ("nestle in my boobies!")- or should I say they are being exploited? but the joke is on them, sadly. i feel bad for women who are challenging themselves to make creative and exciting art who have to sit by and watch this stuff sell. how discouraging that must be.

and by the way, having a record label is not an accomplishment. all it means is someone else thinks they can make money off of you.

I think that all of the heavy-handed "these girls are so punk" comparisons need to be put to rest, because they actually don't do all of the bullshit punk posturing implied by that and their image isn't that punk [maybe w. the exception of the tattooed drummer / occasional singer].

fuckin haters, the coathangers rule!!
